I'm thinking about things that might improve my life

I'm wondering about small purchases that might improve my life. So far I'm thinking:
A couple more phone chargers - one to keep downstairs and one for work

A small, non-pod coffee machine for the bedroom. Any recs?

A plain black cashmere scarf, so I don't need to have to match to cost and/or outfit!

What small things improve your life and might improve mine too?!

Can you not just look at the local weather forecast?

TheClitterati · 20/01/2020 12:06

swap bras for Sloggie Zero Feel bras & bra tops - OMG they are amazing. Like not wearing a bra, but with supported boobs. After years of wearing underwire bras it's a revalation.

Having my debit card in the virtual wallet on my phone, means I don't get caught out if I forget my wallet.

I have a magentic white board on the fridge the DC & I can add things we run out of on it - I take a photo on my phone regularly so its there when I do a shop.

Train your children to load/unload dishwasher & put recyling out - this more than anything has made a HUGE difference to my life lately.

any tips for handcream? I seem to always be buying them but never using them. And I really need to use them.

We have an Aveeno pump in just about every room-easy to squirt as you walk past!

totallydevoidofideas · 20/01/2020 13:51

@TheClitterati for handcream I make sure I always have some at the side of the sofa where I sit to watch the tv - always gets used then. Also one in the handbag for odd moments if I remember.

We also trained the dc to empty the dishwasher and sort out the recycling - brilliant move (also the neighbours were entertained daily by ds shouting at the recycling bins in a rage!)

I like the sound of the Sloggi comfy bras and will try one on asap.

QuestionableMouse · 20/01/2020 13:54

I'm using Atrixo Protection cream and it's fantastic. Big pot too so lasts for ages.

I think AccuWeather have alerts for different things like freezing temps.

jenthelibrarian · 20/01/2020 14:07

Bag for the gym with a small purse for m'ship card and a fiver for coffees etc, combination padlock for lockers fastened to bag strap, small make up bag with tissues, lip balm, hand cream. Headphones, small hand towel, waterbottle.
Only have to find phone and keys and I can go.

Those little shelves with fold-down legs to double up storage in kitchen cupboards. From Lakeland or Ikea.

Lip balm on hall shelf so I apply it as I go out.

Toothpaste and brush in downstairs loo.

Very, very lucky I know, but tall larder fridge and two freezers and a 'dirty' sink for DH's sports kit in new utility room have been real life-changers.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 20/01/2020 14:24

Lunchbox containing tin of fruit, breakfast biscuits, orange juice carton and tin of soup to keep in locker at work in case I forget pack up and/or have no money on me for the canteen.

Separate purse with change for bus fare and also change tin in car for parking.

First aid kit in car, baby wipes, tissues. Plastic box with teabags, milk pods, tea bags, cups, cutlery and biscuits so when we go out for the day I just need to think of flasks and sandwiches. Walking boots, thick socks and cagoules also live in car.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 20/01/2020 16:19

One of these on your key ring then attach keys to inside zip pocket of bag or coat pocket. Makes them ever so easy to find when you're playing the part of a pack mule and trying to get the front door open.

I also swapped from a big purse to a small zipped coin wallet and a card case like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07R1LRT3L/?coliid=ITTLZ39L65IA9&colid=72CDJUYX8657&psc=1&ref=lvvovliggdp_it

Much easier to. Find the right loyalty/credit/debit card.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/01/2020 17:14

Thanks for the coffee machine rec. I think I need something a bit bigger though. I'm actually wondering if a travel kettle and jar of coffee upstairs might be easier. It's just for weekends really, when we want to lounge around.

For hand cream, I like the Aveda Hand Relief minis. One by the bed, one at work and one in my bag.

There’s an app called stocard, you take photos of all your store cards and you can use them off the app then.

I put my most used one on my Apple Pay app for speed.

catlady3 · 20/01/2020 17:26

I live in a town house and got a second fridge and kettle for upstairs where my home office is. The luxury!!!

QuestionableMouse · 20/01/2020 17:29

Don't get a travel kettle. They take forever to boil!

www.argos.co.uk/product/4230429 might work?

Pajamagirl · 20/01/2020 18:18

Some great ideas !
Watching with interest
Love the use for the gel pods container , but will use for all the pkts of different tablets in the kitchen drawers
It has always seemed so wasteful to throw out a perfectly useable plastic container

carlywurly · 20/01/2020 19:17

I keep a travel toiletry bag packed and ready to go. I restock it as soon as I get back from a trip.

Matches and scissors in most rooms - I'm always needing both.

Birthday cards bought in advance for the year. Recommend whistlefish gallery for this.

Am just thinking of replacing all socks in the house with plain charcoal grey cotton ones.

I have a bean to cup coffee machine and buy beans whenever I see them on offer. After the initial outlay they are cheap to run.

A decent non stick crepe pan which I use for loads of things and cleans in seconds.

A powerful iron. Saves so much time.

Peanutbutterfingers · 20/01/2020 20:13

At the grand age of 41 I realised I could buy a separate makeup bag/pencil case for all the bits I can never find in my handbag. Bobbles, sanpro, chapstick, paracetamol, tissues and teeny pot of moisturiser can now be found when required.

TheClitterati · 20/01/2020 22:01

If you need to change or add any plug sockets to your house get the ones with the USB plug as well as the normal three pin plug sockets. I've got a couple of these around the place and I just wish they were everywhere

mammmamia · 21/01/2020 09:20

Great thread!

I’ve just got one of those windscreen covers and it’s made a huge difference these cold mornings. No idea why I haven’t had one all these years.

readingismycardio · 21/01/2020 09:45

Bag:
Mini organiser with: pills (painkillers, antihistamines, nasal spray), a lip balm and a lipstick, pair of earrings (to spice up an outfit if I'm going out), mini deo, 2-3 tampons, plasters, hand cream
Planner - this genuinely helps me a lot (i use a weekly one from moleskine)
Chilly water bottle 750 ml - great for water & tea
External battery + cable

Home:
Underwear organisers. I swear by them. All my underwear + bra + socks are organised

This has been brilliant for me. After asking DH to change over the ones in the kitchen, he's finally done it about 3 months ago. It's great as I can charge my phone and still listen to music/loo up recipes/FaceTime whilst I cook.

I definitely need a newton opener and a second potato peeler as well. I'm another one that regular plays "hunt the peeler" whenever I need to use it. Come to that, a second pair of kitchen scissors wouldn't go amiss mine are often found in DD's room...

katy1213 · 21/01/2020 16:05

I bought a big pack of padded satin coat-hangers and threw out the nasty wire/plastic ones.
And a bulk buy of light bulbs.

TheClitterati · 21/01/2020 16:29

if you have room to store loo roll we switched to Who Gives a Crap loo roll 2 years ago now. We use 3 boxes a year which comes to £2.60 ish a week (less than I used to spend buying the cheapie stuff from Lidl) & its top notch bamboo loo roll. Plus 50% of profits goes to building loos for people in need. And its delivered next day. And we NEVER run out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/01/2020 17:50

Some of these are getting too practical for my liking! I just want to buy some nice things to make life nicer. :). Loo roll and headache tablets are not exciting me. Grin

Can I ask which one you for and how it attaches? I have visions of them sticking to the windscreen!!
