Inspired by other thread with hardly any detail.

I’m American. Was in Rome at an Irish pub with karaoke. An 80s pop song came on and all the British and Scottish people I was with knew every word. It was upbeat and I loved it. But I’d never heard it before. We are all the same age so I know all of the English music that was popular in the US in the 80s.

I’ll listen to anything you suggest here and see if that’s it.

Just listened to Mel and Kim and it’s not that.
It’s was not electronic sounding.
Not Yazz, either.

HelgaHufflepuff76 · 18/01/2020 23:43

Quite a lot of these gueses were hits in the USA!
What about Bros? They were huge here but not in America, and Matt Goss's voice is a bit feminine.

Letthemysterybe · 18/01/2020 23:45

Friday I’m In love- the cure?

Ninkanink · 18/01/2020 23:46

Heaven is a place on earth, Belinda Carlisle.

Morgan12 · 18/01/2020 23:47

What were the crowd doing?

All singing along? Were they dancing? Swaying?

How do you know it was 80s?

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/01/2020 23:50

Toni Basil Mickey

Ninkanink · 18/01/2020 23:50

Walk of Life, Dire Straits (not a female singer, though)

Letthemysterybe · 18/01/2020 23:52

Oo maybe something by Erasure- Jimmy Somerville hits those high notes.

Ninkanink · 18/01/2020 23:54

Was it definitely 80s?

Morgan12 · 18/01/2020 23:58

Feels like I'm in love?

ZoeandChandon · 18/01/2020 23:58

Something by Bananarama or Saint Etienne?

SwedishEdith · 18/01/2020 23:59

Jimmy Somerville wasn't Erasure but, yes, 'Don't Leave Me This Way'? - although that's an old song and internationally known.

Temptation - Heaven 17. Has a female vocalist.

YasssKween · 18/01/2020 23:59

More info!

Fast or slow?
Jumping around or swaying?
Poppy or rocky?

Any lyrics at all even one word?

I know you said it sounds 80s but just in case, some 90s ones too!

It must be love - madness
Mr brightside - the killers
Walking on sunshine
I've had the time of my life
Hey Jude
Mamma Mia - ABBA
Celebration - kool and the gang
Macarena
Saturday night - Whigfield
Ain't no party like an a club party

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/01/2020 00:04

Can you remember if it was a soloist, duet or group/band?
Male or female singers?
Any distinctive instrumentals? Eg harp, saxophone, bagpipes.

HannaYeah · 19/01/2020 00:18

I think it was a female soloist.
The crowd was singing and I think kind of swaying. I can’t remember a single word! I do remember it was played after the karaoke, when people were dancing, not during. Don’t recall any special instruments.

Not Tiffany, Blondie, Yazz, Erasure or the Cure. All very familiar. I didn’t know St. Etienne until more recently but def not.
I don’t think Bonnie Tyler because I know her voice and it wasn’t like that.
Could have totally been early-mid 90s, too.

It could have been Irish but didn’t sound it, more English. It was so so good that I was shocked I didn’t know it. I do know many/most of the above.

I asked a guy how he knew it and he said everyone did. So it was very popular in England and not in the US. I kept up pretty well with 80s music that was popular in the US back in the day.

Not Bananarama. This is making me smile! I have two friends that travel to the UK to see many of these bands still whenever they get the chance!
