Does everyone think their kids are beautiful?

Looking at my dd tonight and wondering how I produced something so lovely. She's 12 with long nearly black hair, very pale skin with a few freckles and grey/blue eyes. She's slim and toned and just lovely really.
Whenever you read about dc on here they are always gorgeous according to parents. Do all parents think their kids are gorgeous?

What an odd question

Sipperskipper · 17/01/2020 07:56

My 2.5 year old DD is beautiful. Curly light brown hair, a few little freckles in the summer and green eyes. She has 2, slightly sticky out chipped front teeth where she fell last year, and it just makes her even more beautiful.

I always feel she has a twinkle in her eye and a silly smirk, which just makes me laugh and think she is even more gorgeous.

Sugarfreejelly · 17/01/2020 07:59

Interesting how so many posters equate being blonde with beauty.

dottiedodah · 17/01/2020 08:02

Reminds me of the old saying "Theres only one perfect child and every mother has it"! There is something lovely about them growing up and becoming their own little person .

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 17/01/2020 08:08

Not just parents! I don't have kids but helped my sister with my nieces fourth birthday party. I looked around the room and secretly thought how much cuter my niece was than all of her friends.

InkogKneeToe · 17/01/2020 08:16

I've always been told that DS(1) is beautiful. He was a chubby little baby who never had the squished wrinkled look and came out looking like a doll despite being overcooked and pulled out with forceps. Somehow he didn't have a mark on him. From there he's turned into a tall, lean, fair haired, big blue eyed toddler and people still stop me in the street to comment on his looks. Even friends ask how me and my husband managed to produce him Grin

I think what tips him from "aww cute" to "ohmygosh he's gorgeous!" is his personality. Randoms in the street think "ah cute baby" and smile or say hi, and he will give them the biggest smile and chatter away and I think that's what does it. He's always been a happy, confident and sociable baby/toddler and I'm sure that's what does it for people.

beautifulstranger101 · 17/01/2020 08:20

My sons are both gorgeous and have always had lots of comments from people - especially my eldest. They are half Persian so have huge brown eyes with long lashes and beautiful olive skin. My eldest (13) was recently told by a girl at school that he looks like elvis presley so he's been walking around like a peacock ever since lol

SallyWD · 17/01/2020 08:22

I think both of mine are gorgeous! Other people say they are too but I suppose that's just what you say to the parents.

LucheroTena · 17/01/2020 08:24

This thread totally proves your point Op Grin. No way are all these kids as beautiful as their mothers are making out. There are a lot of funny looking kids out there whose mothers of course idolise. DD came out looking like a squashed Gorbachev, right down to the birthmark that looked like a bird poop (thankfully disappeared).

drspouse · 17/01/2020 08:27

My DCs are adopted so it's not a "mini me" but DS had classic cute blond blue eyed baby looks though he's now just a scruffy child (his hair is darker and difficult to brush). DD has deep round brown eyes, poker straight black hair and soft brown skin (and is fairly small for her age so does tend to turn on the charm when she's in trouble). She's the one where we have to say loudly "and she's also really brave" or "really helpful" when people comment on her looks.

itbemay1 · 17/01/2020 08:27

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Of course everyone thinks their children are beautiful but what one considers beautiful another does not.

beautifulstranger101 · 17/01/2020 08:29

No way are all these kids as beautiful as their mothers are making out

Threads like this are self selecting, so the people who think their kids might not be gorgeous probably wouldnt contribute would they? Grin

Just like people on low incomes/struggling probably wouldnt contribute to a thread saying "I have £876,976,098 saved for retirement - how much do you have?"

MondeoFan · 17/01/2020 08:31

Yes both mine look like me as a child so I think they are beautiful although I don't think I'm beautiful.
They are typical long blond hair and blue eyes, look good in absolutely everything whether it be designer or supermarket clothes.
Yes I think it's programmed into you for you to think this way

namechangenumber2 · 17/01/2020 08:32

DS1 has always been lovely looking. He's mixed African/British so has a beautiful skin tone. He's able to carry off any colour clothing - much to his friends annoyance and has a really pretty face - strong cheekbones etc. I used to get stopped in the street when he was little as he was just so cute Grin. He looks nothing like me!! Funnily enough he's the only one of his friends without a girlfriend though so maybe he's not as gorgeous as I think?!

DS2 has a different dad, so is blonde, blue eyed and pale like me. He's just heading into the teenage years and I think is really starting to look handsome. He's not as "pretty" as his brother, but has other gorgeous attributes!

I am their mum though so very biased...

TheSheepofWallSt · 17/01/2020 08:34

It’s interesting isn’t it... I thought DS was a stunning baby but his dad thought he looked like Phil Mitchell and when I asked the midwife on the postnatal ward “am I being hormonal and one of Those Mothers to think he’s the most beautiful baby?!”, she leaned over the crib, sniffed and went “he’s alright”. (Not a flicker of a smile).
So perhaps he wasnt Grin

But NOW strangers (often mistaking him for a girl) comment on how “pretty” DS is, how “lovely” “isn’t she beautiful!” (I don’t mind the misgendering, just smile and respond with an “I don’t know where he got it from”). I’m quite used to him though of course, so although he blows me away as a person, I don’t really think about his looks? Only in photos does it strike me that he IS very beautiful.

So yes- probably- but I think that a high proportion of beautiful children grow into less attractive adults (I was one!) so that might explain the phenomena of why so many kids on this thread are considered beautiful (but in real life we don’t see so many stunning people Grin)

Huntlybyelection · 17/01/2020 08:34

Someone I know often talks about her children in terms of their appearance. DC1 is given lots of praise. DC2 is compared to a goblin. It's a bit uncomfortable to hear. Not sure if they think they are being funny but it's potentially damaging.

LucheroTena · 17/01/2020 08:36

Nah. I know plenty with kids who hit a few branches of the ugly tree but we hear how stunning they are. Kids who are obese but the parents can’t see it. It’s a form of vanity really isn’t it. Validation of self.

MsTSwift · 17/01/2020 08:36

It’s the reason for the phase “a fave only a mother could love” Grin

Dd2 is beautiful in the conventional sense. Strangers and unbiased acquaintances who don’t know she’s my daughter have said so. Shes very like my mother who did modelling and was a newsreader in the age female newsreaders chosen for their looks. She’s only 11 but all eyes follow her. Don’t know if it will be a blessing or a curse...

LucheroTena · 17/01/2020 08:37

All the comments about boys with beautiful long or curly hair. In reality they will be commented on as tangled ragamuffins.

Beamur · 17/01/2020 08:45

My Nan freely admitted that my Uncle was not an attractive baby (or child) to the extent that people would start saying something nice and then falter...He suits his looks now he's mature Grin
I think my DD is noticeable but perhaps not conventional in her looks. She has highly visible colouring - red hair, green eyes and has always been stared at a lot. Old ladies absolutely love her.

Kalifa · 17/01/2020 08:59

In my opinion there is no such thing as an ugly child, they are all beautiful in a way, even if it’s a quirky way with freckles or wonky teeth or something. It’s because they are still not doing anything stupid to themselves such as smoking, drinking, excess sunbathing etc..and obviously youth itself gives them a glow. So they all have clear skin, clear eyes, nice hair, nice teeth and (usually) slim toned bodies. They don’t have bad smells about them, given they are well looked after and clean. And when they lose the two upper front milk teeth, that’s cute, they look like little vampires.

olivehater · 17/01/2020 09:00

Speak for yourself Niles. It’s about preference. I think they look gorgeous. I think boys with their hair cut too short look like little thugs.

BillywigSting · 17/01/2020 09:17

My ds was a particularly beautiful baby, I will never forget the look of surprise on the midwifes face after he was born as she went in with what was presumably her typical 'aw cute baby' . She sort of stopped in her tracks and said something along the lines of 'wow he really IS lovely isn't he'

Now he's 6 and still objectively very handsome but there are one or two boys in his class who are more classically beautiful. He's comfortably top three though.

But apart from facial symmetry, big eyes with massively long eyelashes, floppy golden curls and rosebud lips, he's got the gentlest and most stoic nature, and is already a grafter. I'm immensely proud of him and often wonder how I managed to produce something so utterly lovely in every way.

He certainly didn't get it from me Grin

frankincenseandmur · 17/01/2020 09:22

I think all of mine are beautiful, but I do think it’s because I’m their mum so I’m biased

elenacampana · 17/01/2020 09:32

I’m childfree myself but I do have a niece and I firmly believe she’s the most spectacular looking child on the whole of the earth! Grin
