It's true that names do take a long time to come back. That said, I don't think in my lifetime (I'm mid 40s) we'll see the return of 70s favourites such as Sharon, Tracey, Nicola, Alison, Darren, Stuart, Ian, Gary. Even further off are the names of the late 80s/90s, I give you:

Kylie, Chelsea, Shannon, Carly, Kelly, Keeley, Danielle, Courtney, Brooke, Tegan, Paige, Lauren, Shane, Kyle, Reece, Shaun, Sean, Ryan, Grant, Spencer, Bradley, Tyler, Taylor.

All highly desirable in 2080?

Chocolatemice · 16/01/2020 08:42

Its difficult to tell, as fashions change. Its never going to be as extreme as when we were invaded and everyone changed from English to French names.

SoftBlocks · 16/01/2020 08:42

I saw a Network 7 feature about names thirty years ago with the late Magenta Devine talking about this. She was saying would names like Percy and Violet ever make a comeback? Unlikely! Guess what?

TheVanguardSix · 16/01/2020 08:44

Maureen

TheVanguardSix · 16/01/2020 08:46

Oh and Neville, Gary... and Adolph.

CatteStreet · 16/01/2020 08:51

Derek was the first one I thought of. And I can't imagine -een names like Maureen and Doreen coming back.

Sally (I am aware of at least one little Sally, primary school age), Helen and Jean are due a comeback, I think. Veronica will be a hipster name in 5-10 years. Ronnie for short.

I can see Ian, Stuart and Gareth (not Gary) coming back, too.

Ada's popular at the moment. I think greater awareness of Ada Lovelace has helped there too.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/01/2020 08:53

@dayswithaY there's a Carly and a Paige in my DS's year at school Grin (Year 2).

When DS was at nursery there was a Pamela, an Audrey and a Betty there.

Samantha Faeirs from the only way is Essex named her baby Paul after his dad.

CatteStreet · 16/01/2020 08:56

I met a little Winifred lately. I don't think its that awful. It reminds me of the talented, serious, studious girl in Ballet Shoes who took it really well that pretty Pauline got all the good parts.

Loads and loads of little Idas (pronounced Eeda) in Germany.

Phyllis is great! I really like it. Same with Millicent. I don't understand why it's so hated but there are Millies everywhere.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 16/01/2020 09:00

StJohn! Have never met one in real life.

namechangenewness · 16/01/2020 09:01

Edith and Dorothy have made a comeback. Go by Edie and Dotty.

CornishMaid1 · 16/01/2020 09:02

Quite of few of these names are really popular at the moment and are in the top baby name lists.

A lot of the grandparent names from the 20s/30s are in favour - Arthur, Dorothy etc. I think it is some of the names for people from the 50s/60s that are out of favour these days, so the likes of Sharon, Karen, Barry, Keith etc. They will probably come back at some stage.

The only names that I think are out and will stay gone are the names with bad connotations - I can't see many girls called Fanny or boys called Adolf coming around. The worst I saw in the baby name book recently was Mungo and really can't see that making a comeback either.

StuntNun · 16/01/2020 09:04

Gaylord and Fanny aren't ever making a comeback.

TheAirbender · 16/01/2020 09:04

Loads of Percys about!

My name is never mentioned on these threads. It is not out there, but not common, either and I have a different spelling to the usual English one that is often used in Scotland.

That said, I have been horrified by the rise of Archie, Alfie, Effie et al on the baby names threads here. I was talking to a woman at work the other day and her new granddaughter is Florence. Florence, to me, is about 100 years old! Most of the names that get the vitriol on this list are perfectly nice, ordinary names, but I am of that generation.

Of course a lot of these names will come back into fashion. It is ridiculous to say they won't just because you don't like them.

SunshineDays2019 · 16/01/2020 09:22

I must get back to work! Have a good day all Smile
