I was in a shop in Brighton last year and a mum called her little boy over. He was about 4... his name.... Morris/Maurice.

MollysMummy2010 · 16/01/2020 21:27

My mum died just before I got pregnant with my daughter so I gave her my mums name as a middle name - MIL was pissed off that I wouldn’t give my daughter her name as a first name. Her name is Vera. My mums name was Ann. Slightly different I think...

Youcunnyfunt · 16/01/2020 21:29

Yeah I think it’s mostly only names that have become slang for some reason that will totally go.
Fanny, Gay, Gaylord, Adolf, Ninny, Siri, Alexa

My dad's name has been mentioned several times and I can sort of understand why.

For some reason my mum's not particularly attractive name seems to have come into vogue with a celebrity child called it and mentions in the name threads.

Skyejuly · 16/01/2020 21:39

Gaynor

Popular when I was at school!

One of the older names I am never see coming back

Beverley 😬

raskolnikova · 16/01/2020 21:40

I reckon some of the parents sat watching Hey Duggee every day like I do will start calling their second and third babies Betty and Enid. I'm starting to come round to Enid actually.

People keep mentioning Sandra, but I've known several young, beautiful Sandras from elsewhere in Europe and it's changed the connotations for me. I don't see why it can't make a revival here.

Also, learning Spanish I now quite like Linda as I associate it with its meaning, pretty/cute.

whiteroseredrose · 16/01/2020 21:45

Who knows in the next 10 years?

I remember being shocked at colleagues calling their children names like Harry, Archie, Max and Arthur or Edie, Grace and Lily. They are from my grandparents' generation. Now the schools are crawling with them.

So maybe Mark, Simon, Stephen, Sarah, Helen and Jane will be all the rage in a decade or two.

Needadviceplz · 16/01/2020 21:46

I'm due any day and naming my girl Ethel effy for short. Loads of old names are having a come back. I know it's not most people's cup of tea but I love it. I've heard most of these at nursery or baby groups. Think names gave a hundred year cycle.

user133367 · 16/01/2020 21:46

I think loads of the names listed sound fab!

Keith
Brian
John
Paul
Colin
Geoffrey

Michelle
Lorraine
Jean
Jacqueline
Jenny
Paula
Terri

I love the name Beverley...but would never have used it sadly as can just imagine everyone's reaction.

formerbabe · 16/01/2020 22:48

John is long overdue a comeback.

SeraphinaDombegh · 16/01/2020 22:50

These threads always make me laugh, as I play "my name" bingo with them. It's always there somewhere Grin I feel fairly confident that a lot of names we can't stand right now will sound different to our children's children.

MamaWeasel · 16/01/2020 22:53

Cecil

redeyetonowheregood · 16/01/2020 23:02

Nicola

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 16/01/2020 23:09

Seraphina - I too play 'my name bingo'. Grin I've drawn a blank this time. DH's name has cropped up a few times. It was naff when his parents used it in the 50s, and it's still naff now!

booearing · 17/01/2020 06:43

Carol
Ian
Roger

Soen · 17/01/2020 12:09

I know a little boy named John, but it is definitely underused these days. Good solid name.

Dont know any Jonathons under the age of 30.

Chocolatedaim · 17/01/2020 12:23

I love Vera/Norma/Edith/Nora/Jean
I know a couple of the above.

I think it’s the 70s names that probably won’t be coming back for a bit, names like
Tracey
Sharon
Angela
Carol
Elaine

Boys names I think (or hope) are gone ;

Derek
Gary
Roger
Keith
Barry
Dennis

Skyejuly · 17/01/2020 12:25

I have a Dennis 🤣

Chocolatedaim · 17/01/2020 12:35

Sorry skye hope I didn’t cause offence. My daughters name has been mentioned a couple of times but I couldn’t imagine her being called anything else 😀

Kazziemb · 17/01/2020 17:27

There is a Brian in DS school Smile

BunsyGirl · 17/01/2020 17:41

Someone mentioned Laurence. I have a 6 year old Laurence!

A number of the children at his school with non-British parents have names that were popular when I was at school such as David, Richard, Ian, Emma.
