Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

OP posts:

Blind gossip websites have been saying this is the plan for a while. Keep the perks and ditch the work!

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 07:52

The Mail has an article which goes into more detail - a new website?

I can completely understand stepping back from duties and being an active member of the royal family but I don’t agree with being subsided by the tax payer and retaining titles if so. This goes for both Andrew and Harry. Charles wants a slimmed down royal family is the media is to be believed, and this is his chance to literally start removing members.

Ok, beginning to think this isn't the happy change I thought initially!

Britain’s Royal Correspondents are regarded internationally as credible sources of both the work of members of The Royal Family as well as of their private lives. This misconception propels coverage that is often carried by other outlets aroun

HowlsMovingBungalow · 09/01/2020 07:55

Yup, various blind gossip sites have been predicting this since the birth of Archie.

DarkMutterings · 09/01/2020 08:01

Of course this is about money, bollocks to all that do-goodery nonsense. Doing-good is sticking in the RF and supporting the numerous charities, working hard in front and behind scenes.. whilst never complaining, never explaining.

I think people also underestimate the figures involved. Numerous reports put Meghan's worth at around 5m USD or 3.5m GBP which is a lot but quite low compared to blockbuster or Hollywood Royalty (just for comparison Jennifer Anniston is about 200m). Apparently married they are worth 35m.

And whilst a lot more than most people dream of, it's absolutely no where near what they could be worth if they commercialise their 'brand' . The Clintons - apparently the model they are cloning - are worth 125m.

On one hand, good on them for their ambition, on the other really neither of them are that special, they didn't achieve anything like running for President or a truly stellar acting career. They can only get this rich by trading off the name and Royal connection. It's like the aristocracy equivalent of becoming the Kardashians. And honestly I think that's what makes people balk - well it's what makes me balk!

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 08:02

From what I can see they will start to fade out the 5% of the Sovereign Grant they get but no insight into the 95% from PofW? And they want to stay HRH and earn money. And their security remains because they are classed as persons needing it.
Website is weird mix of friendly and formal.

I was always pro them but I don't know. I'm pro republic but there's clearly a lot of ill feeling swilling around somewhere.

SouthWestmom · 09/01/2020 08:03

sussexroyal.com/funding/

This is the new website.

Interesting times and all that.

minesagin37 · 09/01/2020 08:06

I don't blame them. She's faced racism since becoming his wife and he's trying to ensure they don't get their lives screwed like his mums did. The great British public love to have victims. There's Prince Andrew rodgering young girls and he hasn't received as much bad press as Meghan!

LittleSweet · 09/01/2020 08:07

I wonder as Meghan is such a fighter for women's rights and the way the Queen supported Prince Andrew at Christmas that she found it difficult to be around people like that.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 09/01/2020 08:09

The website is intriguing, why the need to break finances down - no other Royal has felt the need?!

Happysummer2020 · 09/01/2020 08:13

Yes. Meghan has planned this nice money spinner due to her passion for women's rights. Okay.

Utterlybutterly8 · 09/01/2020 08:15

Of course this is about money, bollocks to all that do-goodery nonsense.

But they’re said to be worth about £35 million already and live an impossibly luxurious lifestyle already - why would they need any more?

The website is intriguing, why the need to break finances down - no other Royal has felt the need?!

They need to break down the finances because otherwise, the British taxpayer will (quite rightly) be questioning how they’re to be funded if they’re renouncing their royal duties.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/01/2020 08:16

The odd public speech and a bit of charity work doesn't make her a campaigner on women's rights. People have really swallowed this line but it's bollocks. They are a selfish and self absorbed pair; they deserve each other.

MurrayTheMonk · 09/01/2020 08:17

Good for them. They can do what they like as long as the public aren't paying for it.

Would have been a bit nicer to speak to the Queen before announcing it (on a Human level-she's his Grandma-and professionally I guess-she's the 'head of the firm') though...

bohemia14 · 09/01/2020 08:18

They're basically setting themselves up as a parallel 'celebrity' monarchy so that they can make money out of selling their brand.

I'm so disappointed in them as although for a while this has seemed like the path they were heading towards I believed that those who predicted it were wrong. I thought that Harry had a greater sense of duty and loyalty.

Kanga83 · 09/01/2020 08:18

I wish they'd renounce their titles and taxpayers money while they are at it. Then I would respect what they do. Andrew can join them while they are at it.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 09/01/2020 08:19

£35 mil wouldn't last long with them, didn't she have 500k worth of clothes when pregnant (paid by Charles) if they had to buy their own luxuries/vast wardrobes (well not Harry as he seems to only own two shit suits and a pair of shoes with holes in the sole) that money would go rapidly!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/01/2020 08:20

Interesting website- I found the funding breakdown a bit off- felt they were throwing the queen under the bus, stressing that the renovations were to HER home and their Security is MANDATORY (ie blame the queen for expenses).

Also a ridiculous comment about their previous home in Norfolk being too small for a growing family- really????
Well your last real job Harry earned 36k a year so please do let us know how you contribute to 2.5m renovations without family help?!

JacquesHammer · 09/01/2020 08:20

This thread is absolutely hilarious.

Some of the comments typed in earnest are so laughably stupid.

Please keep going Grin

Inniu · 09/01/2020 08:23

If the sovereign grant money they are giving up funds 5% of their expenditure and it is £2million that would mean their annual funding cost is £40 million! Prince Charles is funding the other £38m?

That can’t be right.

Frenchw1fe · 09/01/2020 08:23

It will be interesting in 4 years to see how Archie is educated if the Sussexes want to spend equal time between the UK and North America. Perhaps they'll homeschool.

DateLoaf · 09/01/2020 08:26

The quote ‘The goal is to focus on what connects not what divides us’ flashes up as you land on their website. Credited to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Don’t they mean Jo Cox MP’s maiden speech to Parliament?

OxfordCat · 09/01/2020 08:29

@DarkOceanWater they do accept freebies all the time. They accepted Elton John's private jet for their hols last year, and recently stayed in an 18-bed mansion near Vancouver, loaned to them by an unnamed billionaire. It's actually quite sickening.

DarkMutterings · 09/01/2020 08:29

But they’re said to be worth about £35 million already and live an impossibly luxurious lifestyle already - why would they need any more?

But why have 35m when you can have 100 plus plus plus

Maybe I'm too cynical but I doubt it.
