Sharks are independent from birth. I always thought their mums took care of them but apparently not. Blush
Anyone else got anything they were surprised to discover.

I knew that panthers weren't a breed, but I didn't know until recently that they have the correct markings we just can't usually see them with the naked eye. They can be seen in infrared.

Well I never knew that

Cashew nuts are poisonous until roasted - hie did anyone find that out?

user1498572889 · 12/01/2020 19:46

@DjMomo
My son in law is 33 years old and British. He has had 33 years of his mum buying mince pies at Christmas and it was not until last year that he realised it isn’t savoury mince. He still doesn’t eat them though because he doesn’t like sweet mincemeat either. 😣

@TroysMammy
Well I never knew that there was a song about jelly tots. Can you DH remember who sang it ?

YappityYapYap · 12/01/2020 22:24

I wish I never read the fact about breathing through one nostril. Now I can't stop monitoring the situation!

That Danny glover is black.
Just been to see Jumanji tonight and wondered who played Milo
I think I’ve mixed him up with Danny de Vito

Santasy · 12/01/2020 23:37

Oliver Bonas, not a charity shop - who knew?!

Grin but yes, quel surprise!

Also, how did anyone ever find out that kidney beans stop being poisonous if you boil the pants off them for 2 hours?

Regarding black panthers being a superfluous term, try duck billed platypus! There is no other other kind so why add the duck billed bit?

But I occasionally feed the cat duck so she can be a 'duck filled fatty puss' I couldn't do that if you dropped the duck billed.

But another superfluous term, Vaisakhi celebrations by meed are organised by a group of 'Sikh Gurdwaras', I can't think of any other type of Gurdwara.

@lostsoulsunited venomous moles?! Shock

That's me not getting back to sleep, then!

lostsoulsunited · 13/01/2020 05:53

Turtles can breath out of their rear end

lostsoulsunited · 13/01/2020 05:56

@fruityconfusedhotdog worry not unless you are rabbit sized
*
European mole*
â–ª Latin name: Talpa europaea
â–ª Type of venom: Bite saliva
â–ª Where they live: Great Britain and Russia
â–ª Size: 4 to 6 inches in length, a tail length of 1 to 1.5 inches, 2.5 to 4.5 ounces in weight
The European molee_ is not likely to attack humans, they are very antisocial animals. It is always best not to antagonize these animals because they do have sharp teeth and can bite through the skin and inject saliva in its prey.

The saliva paralyzes the victim and gives the mole time to eat it. European moles will often paralyze victims and bring those animals back to their homes where they slowly eat them over the long winter. The prey tracked by these moles include mice, rabbits, and other small animals.

That the teams in University Challenge don’t sit one on top of the other, as they appear on screen, but side by side. Surprises me every time I watch it Grin

I also thought things stored to the cloud were just floating around in cyberspace til about a month ago. DP works in IT and was very amused by this.

Hassled · 13/01/2020 21:49

I'm sort of scared to admit this but - I never realised that Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the ABCDEFG song are the same tune. I've sung both of them many hundreds of times.

MrsJoshNavidi · 13/01/2020 22:08

happycamper11 - I'm so pleased I'm not the only one. My DH is also an IT bod! He laughed his socks off.

1wilma1 · 13/01/2020 22:24

Owls don't say twit twoo, if you hear twit twoo you are listening to two owls talking to each other. One says twit and the other says twoo.
Was news to me!

Gammeldragz · 13/01/2020 22:54

The owl thing was news to me too, my brother explained it recently (he's an ecologist) and it blew my mind. I blame children's books.

mineofuselessinformation · 13/01/2020 23:07

That many areas in the fens would be under the water unless they were pumped out - which they are.
(And many people asked me the risk of flooding when I was selling my house in the fens. I had to explain that they were the best drained in the country!)

I only found out yesterday that cows only produce milk when they are pregnant / have given birth. I thought they just produced milk as a general cow feature!

I only found out yesterday that cows only produce milk when they are pregnant / have given birth. I thought they just produced milk as a general cow feature!

I presume that a cow who has never given birth doesn't produce milk, but once she has done, does the milk not continue being produced indefinitely as long as the cow is regularly milked? Confused

The famous club in Wimbledon was originally established as a croquet club. It had been going for 7 years before somebody suggested they might like to set aside a space to give a certain new-fangled racket sport a bit of a go as well.
