Sharks are independent from birth. I always thought their mums took care of them but apparently not. Blush
Anyone else got anything they were surprised to discover.

That it's razed to the ground not raised to the ground. When describing a building that's been demolished. I was 47 when I found out

Onadifferentuniverse · 23/11/2020 10:32

I felt ridiculous a few years ago when I realised that Africa wasn’t a country.

mummmy2017 · 23/11/2020 10:36

Not sure if someone said it but you can tiggle yourself, on the roof of your mouth with your 👅.
If feels really weird.
Now admit you tried it.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 23/11/2020 10:39

Did you also know that shark embryos cannabalize each other in the womb before birth so only the largest embryos survive?

I've been posting on the regional word variation thread and assume that tiggle is a regional word for tickle that I've never come across, what part of the country is that from @mummmy2017?

That is something I've learned Grin

I love these threads!

Talking of Africa, the US State department didn't know (or check) that Andorra was in Europe, not Africa. They were sent billions in aid money. See here.

Another random one - for the vast majority of adults, each foot will be the same size as the distance between your elbow and your wrist.

BalloonSlayer · 23/11/2020 10:56

Re the black panther thing, black cats are also tabbies, you can see the markings on very sunny days.
@MrsJoshNavidi I work in one of the places that store all your data , and I assure they are nothing like a cloud .
STOP IT!!! I want to imagine my data stored on fluffy foating clouds, having been handwritten by sky spirits on parchment with a quill.

Fifthtimelucky · 23/11/2020 11:10

That Andorra one must surely have been an April Fool?

I don’t think that’s a real news report.

I was delighted to find that a baby puffin is called a puffling

Unless they did a serious story The Onion isn't a real news site, it's spoof news, I'm pretty sure that's a joke

I am having such fun testing my nostrils....and am going to make a note here, and come back to tell you all when it changes.

Right nostril is faster than the left atm....covering my right nostril makes me feel a bit suffocated.

So far apart from the nostril swappig I knew most of these,

Only quibble I have is the mountain one, isn't the tallest mountain actually under the sea, in the Mariana Trench? Or have I confused that with the Hawaiian one?

TurquoiseDragon · 23/11/2020 11:54

@bettybattenburg

It is impossible to tickle yourself
Not true. I have one spot, the roof of my mouth, and I can assure you I can tickle myself there with my tongue.
Ariela · 23/11/2020 12:28

@smemorata

Would (as a verb) can never grammatically followed by of!
I would of course disagree with you on this.

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

I only found out yesterday that cows only produce milk when they are pregnant / have given birth. I thought they just produced milk as a general cow feature!

I presume that a cow who has never given birth doesn't produce milk, but once she has done, does the milk not continue being produced indefinitely as long as the cow is regularly milked? Confused

No, they have to keep giving birth! Dairy cows generally have a calf every year during their productive years in order to produce milk for 10 months, they are usually artificially inseminated again within a few months of giving birth. The calf is taken away so that humans can have the milk.
Fifthtimelucky · 23/11/2020 12:33

I don't think cows have to keep on giving birth - though that is what is happens in practice.

Humans can carry on producing milk for years after giving birth, assuming there is a demand for it, and I can't believe that is not true of cows too.

Aposterhasnoname · 23/11/2020 12:33

Owls have long, skinny, and let’s be honest here, hilarious, legs.

Well I never knew that
cushioncovers · 23/11/2020 12:48

To be profitable to the farmers a cow has to be pregnant roughly every year to maximise milk yield.

I knew that the kiwi (the bird) laid enormous eggs relative to its size, but I only found out this morning that it's the equivalent of a woman giving birth to a 4-year-old child... Confused
This is best shown by an x-ray image...

haircutsRus · 23/11/2020 13:20

Male seahorses are the only creatures in the animal kingdom to go through pregnancy and give birth to live young. The female deposits her eggs in a pouch under his tail, where he incubates them.

Baby seahorses are as cute as it is possible to get.

Soubriquet · 23/11/2020 13:55

Here’s a sad one

When elderly whales die, they don’t just pass peacefully

They run out of energy to get to the surface so they sink to the bottom of the ocean floor and drown.

However, it does benefit the entire ecosystem as it will feed thousands of sea animals and fertilise the sea floor

that is a bit sad, but just as well they sink, otherwise the sea surface would be full of decaying whale bodies....and the beaches full of washed up whale corpses.
