Sharks are independent from birth. I always thought their mums took care of them but apparently not. Blush
Anyone else got anything they were surprised to discover.

Embarrassed to share this! I only found out the other day that when you breathe out normally, your breath is warm but when you blow air out, it is cold. I was mind blown

oh no.

The air comes from your lungs, it is the same temp whether you breathe out slowly or quickly. Think about it, what has cooled the air down?
It FEELS colder, because air travelling over your skin cools the skin, so the faster the air, the more air goes over your skin and the more cooling effect it has.

But if you measured it with a theremometer, it would be the same temp.

And the air going in and out one nostril? No.
If that is the case for you, then you probably have a blocked airway somewhere.

And the good old petrol gauge? No. Not in all cars.

smemorata · 14/01/2020 09:58

Would (as a verb) can never grammatically followed by of!

DadDadDad · 14/01/2020 11:31

@steppemum - I'm not sure your explanation is right. If you have tightly pursed lips, then the air is escaping under pressure. The decompression as it emerges could then result in cooling, as predicted by the gas laws.

It's the principle behind refrigeration: a gas is compressed then allowed to expand as it passes through the cooling tubes. You get the reverse when you pump up a bike tyre: air being put under pressure gets hot, even though there is no heat source.

DadDadDad · 14/01/2020 11:50

@steppemum - OK, did some googling, and I'm not sure my explanation is right either. While adiabatic cooling is a thing as I described above, apparently it seems the main explanation is entrainment, where fast moving air from your mouth pulls in cooler air from the surroundings. So there is a temperature difference with having a more gentle breathing out, but it's because of this mixing. I think!

I discovered, on a previous thread, that the Elgin Marbles aren't like the child's toy marbles, but are in fact marble sculptures 🤯

Coldemort · 14/01/2020 13:59

I'm doing vegan January and only through this did I also realise that capers weren't tiny fish -specifically anchovies- Blush

AlCalavicci · 14/01/2020 14:09

Capers are the devil's work ! That's the only thing anyone needs to know about them Grin

For some reason, I always pictured the Elgin marbles as marble-shaped, but around the size of a footstool. I have no idea why I thought that.

I’ve watched Strictly Come Dancing for many years, and it was only this year that I realised the Blackpool Tower Ballroom wasn’t actually at the top of the tower.

FlamingoAndJohn · 14/01/2020 22:27

I thought capers were fish too for years. I wonder where so many of us got this idea from.

Or, as I said up thread, because physics.

Some domestic black cats are tabbies. You can see their tabby markings faintly in bright sunlight.

I say this as somebody who usually has a jar in the fridge and regularly snaffles a teaspoonful on her way past... Blush

DadDadDad · 15/01/2020 09:54

Zoidberg - I'm with you. If we have pizza at home as a family, I always like to top up my slices with olives and a few capers.

MozzchopsThirty · 15/01/2020 12:36

@DownWentTheFlag I didn't know that either

I found out today (doing a crossword) that coconut water can be used as a substitute for blood plasma - any medics able to confirm this as I'm still sceptical.

Widely used on casualties during the Vietnam war. Only know about it because we are currently in SE Asia and have been learning a lot about wartime there.

My sister thought seahorses were mythical Disney creations. When she saw then in a pet shop she asked if they mechanical! I was six, she was sixteen!

From earlier upthread re narwhales.

Although apparently the bishop of Southwells Crozier is made of one

Caused me some consternation as I thought Southwells Crozier was a place.

I thought it was a joke at first - but no it's true.

Well I never knew that
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 23/11/2020 08:46

I commented on another thread recently that I didnt know astin martins were real cars. I thought they were a made up thing for James Bond, like how Batman has the batmobile.

And yes to not knowing narwhales are real until the recent attack.

Soubriquet · 23/11/2020 09:05

One that made me Blush puffer fish inflate with water not air.

I mean...it makes sense they inflate with water but i seriously thought it was air

ReplacementPlasticUterus · 23/11/2020 09:53

If that is the case for you, then you probably have a blocked airway somewhere

I heard the QI elves talking about this a couple of weeks ago. It's actually more like one nostril is more 'dominant' than the other so air-flow is faster in one than the other, and that dominance changes every few hours. If you put your finger over one nostril to close it, you can tell which one is 'easier' the breathe through, and try again in a couple of hours, the 'easier' one will have changed. It's something to do with the slower air flow being better for determining smells. (I was only half listening to be honest, but I did spend the day nostril-testing!)

There is an order for adjectives before nouns and they are always in the order : opinion-size-age-shape-colour-origin-material-purpose then Noun
