What on Earth can I do with 460 cigarettes?

They were my Mum's.

I think they're worth about about £250 so don't really want to just throw them away. I honestly don't know anyone who smokes. I've asked local women's refuge and food bank and they don't want them. Although they were bought in UK (and so have had tax paid on them), I don't know where to sell them.

I don't want to make a profit from them as my Mum died from a smoking related illness, so anything I do make I'd donate to Cancer Research or similar, but just don't have a clue what to do.

Any suggestions?

Please just throw them away. Better that than they're smoked.

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2020 18:21

Your local homeless hostel?

There's one down the road to me and they have a huge smoking area in front.

schoolcats · 06/01/2020 18:21

Bin them. By selling them you are contributing to other people choosing to risk their health by smoking.

StealthPolarBear · 06/01/2020 18:21

Sorry about your mum Flowers

StillWeRise · 06/01/2020 18:21

blimey that's a real problem

Justonemorepiece · 06/01/2020 18:21

Give them to me! Xmas Grin

Perch · 06/01/2020 18:21

Why not just bin them?

Sarahlou63 · 06/01/2020 18:21

Night shelter?

Bin or compost.

fantasmasgoria1 · 06/01/2020 18:22

I'm in two minds. Yes smoking is bad but for example homeless people smoke because they have little else that gives them pleasure. Idk perhaps put it on Facebook and see if anyone wants them.

Somanysocks · 06/01/2020 18:22

Bin them, it's the best thing to do with cigarettes.

Don't you see the irony of selling them to someone and then giving the proceeds to Cancer Research.

wineoclockthanks · 06/01/2020 18:23

Thanks for quick replies. Re why I don't bin them, I guess I'd like to feel they were doing some good (ie some money to charity) and I know that a smoker would buy them anyway.

I'd offer them for a reasonable price on Nextdoor - do you have that?

You're not responsible for people smoking, it's better that they displace demand for 460 cigarettes in the supply chain than go to waste.

inwood · 06/01/2020 18:24

Bin them.

You can't give profits from fags to cancer research.

JockTamsonsBairns · 06/01/2020 18:25

Pretty sure I'll get flamed for this, but I had a similar amount in my kitchen cupboard when I gave up smoking seven years ago. I bagged them up and gave them to a homeless chap in town, who'd been sleeping in a shop doorway for months. I know it was no good for his health but, by god, that lovely man was over the moon. No regrets.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:25

You tried the food bank!? I’m a bit stunned at that idea!

I’d offer them to a school to sacrifice in a non-smoking assembly. I encouraged my year 9 class to squash a biggie into the bin and pledge to never smoke! I told them even if one o them didn’t because of this, it was worth the cost of the packet. One boy chased me out the room after the lesson saying. ‘ I won’t Miss! I promise you didn’t waste your money’.

Well chuffed I was.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 06/01/2020 18:26

Your mum died from smoking related problems. Bin the sodding things! What good did they do her? And you can’t give cancer charity money from cigarettes.

Best place for them is the bin....

x2boys · 06/01/2020 18:27

Wether you throw them away or not ,it won't stop people from smoking .

Notso · 06/01/2020 18:27

You can't give profits from fags to cancer research.
Is it any different to tax from cigarettes going to the NHS?

I'd give them away I think.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 06/01/2020 18:28

I think the homeless shelter is a great idea, as many homeless people would be delighted. I don’t smoke and don’t like it anywhere near me, but I‘m not homeless and trying to get pleasure in what I can.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 06/01/2020 18:28

if you sell them you can't guarantee people under 18 aren't going to smoke them and I'm sure most platforms e.g. Facebook, gumtree don't allow smoking stuff to be sold.

if you don't want them to go to waste maybe give them out to homeless people or ask at work/on social media if any friends/colleagues would like them to make a donation for them.

BentNeckLady · 06/01/2020 18:28

Sell them on Facebook market place and buy yourself something nice :)

JasonPollack · 06/01/2020 18:28

Give them to a homeless person. Or split them and give them to a few.

ScarletAnemone · 06/01/2020 18:30

They’ve already done some good if they’ve been bought in the U.K. and tax has been paid on them.

If anyone actually uses them they’ll do harm.
