What on Earth can I do with 460 cigarettes?

They were my Mum's.

I think they're worth about about £250 so don't really want to just throw them away. I honestly don't know anyone who smokes. I've asked local women's refuge and food bank and they don't want them. Although they were bought in UK (and so have had tax paid on them), I don't know where to sell them.

I don't want to make a profit from them as my Mum died from a smoking related illness, so anything I do make I'd donate to Cancer Research or similar, but just don't have a clue what to do.

Any suggestions?

I was going to suggest someone homeless.

I guess as your mum has already paid the taxes she's paid into system with them.

Sorry about your mum Thanks

TheMemoryLingers · 06/01/2020 18:32

Yes, give them to homeless people - if they don't smoke, it's something they'd be able to sell themselves. I see homeless people emptying out the cigarette butts from the smoking bins where I work and collecting them up to smoke. That's got to be worse for their health than smoking new cigarettes, because they'll be taking out the manky tobacco and smoking it unfiltered so while, in an ideal world, they wouldn't smoke you could at least help them smoke more safely.

SinkGirl · 06/01/2020 18:32

Smokers will buy cigarettes regardless - many would much rather buy them off you and have that money go to charity (or to benefit you) than buy them from a shop.

KenDodd · 06/01/2020 18:32

I think @FredaFrogspawn has the best solution. How would the op go about doing that though?

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:33

What message are you giving the homeless if you gobble them your cigarettes? These are too awful for normal people, here have them as your life is worth less than the others.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:33

Gobble? Sorry! Give.

TheMemoryLingers · 06/01/2020 18:35

These are too awful for normal people, here have them as your life is worth less than the others.

Rubbish. Most non-homeless smokers would snap them up if the OP sold them at a discount, let alone offered them free.

Bluntness100 · 06/01/2020 18:35

You can't give profits from fags to cancer research.

Why? The tax on cigarettes funds far more of the nhs than smokers actually use. Or do you suggest the government doesn't fund the nhs from fag money either?

Sell them op, give the money to cancer research, or any other charity you wish to support. Just ask people at work or friends If they know anyone who wishes to buy them.

What a ludicrous comment.

StillWeRise · 06/01/2020 18:38

is it even legal to re sell cigarettes?

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:38

Rubbish. Most non-homeless smokers would snap them up if the OP sold them at a discount, let alone offered them free

Course they would, as would any smoker. So why give them to a group who are at a higher risk of chest infections and pneumonia in the first place?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 06/01/2020 18:39

This is an interesting article on cigarettes and the homeless. Though the writer is a man so would naturally feel more secure doing this.

DontCallMeShitley · 06/01/2020 18:40

Throwing them away will make no difference to making people healthy. If they want to smoke they will do so anyway. Giving them to a person that picks up dog ends from the street to try to get a much needed smoke together would make them feel much better than inhaling the well used parts of old ones.

I gave my Mum's to the person that helped me with the food and setting out the room for the visitors after the funeral. Admittedly there were only a few packets but they were welcomed, and saved them buying more.

Smokers will be grateful. Even rough sleepers would probably like them to exchange for something else.

TheMemoryLingers · 06/01/2020 18:40

Because they will smoke anyway, if they're smokers, Freda. But what they'll otherwise be smoking is other people's soggy dog ends picked off the pavement or from bins - or if they're lucky, roll-ups - both of which are more damaging than filtered cigarettes.

DontCallMeShitley · 06/01/2020 18:41

Re: the above post, I will add that I hate smoking, the smell, the stained teeth, the health risks etc. but recognise that others will want to do it regardless.

StealthPolarBear · 06/01/2020 18:41

Much more likely to live in sub standard conditions, more likely to be in poor health and less likely to access health care.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:42

Give £250 quids worth of fags to a homeless person and you can bet you’re contributing to a huge increase in the amount they smoke. Good giving isn’t really about ooo he’d really get a huge thrill out of my gift, it’s about how can I make a change for the better for this person. It’s like those appalling shoe boxes- thousands of pounds spent on tat making children no better off at all in life so we can feel warm fuzzies at the thought of their little faces when the same money could have funded a well.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:43

I’m sorry, I overstepped.

x2boys · 06/01/2020 18:43

But if homeless people smoke they will regardless of whether the Op gives them away or not,Probably not @StillWeRise,but plenty of people do that's how many people afford to smoke by buying cheap cigarettes or tobacco ,shop near me sells plenty of under the counter tobacco and cigarettes ,I know this will be shocking to many on mumsnet .

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 06/01/2020 18:43

For goodness sake, no one is suggesting that she gives the whole lot to one person!

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2020 18:44

These are too awful for normal people, here have them as your life is worth less than the others

Normal people??? WTF Angry

Most homeless people who are addicted to nicotine can't afford to buy cigarettes. Therefore it's not that they're too 'awful for normal people'. It's that 'normal people' can afford their smoking addictions.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/01/2020 18:46

I was being ironic. I do quite a bit of voluntary work with the homeless. I apologise for over-stepping.

LittleLongDog · 06/01/2020 18:47

anything I do make I'd donate to Cancer Research

I’m 99% sure Cancer Research would rather you chuck them than give them £250.

loutypips · 06/01/2020 18:48

Your mum died from a smoking related illness, please bin them.
Don't feed anyone else's addiction.

teenagetantrums · 06/01/2020 18:49

Just sell them on Facebook. Or give them to any homeless person who you see smoking. No point in throwing them away.
