They are in some Cities, but I would very much doubt every town and city.

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 06/01/2020 00:10

As PP said only in some cities/ high streets

What are Street pastors

bsc · 06/01/2020 00:14

I've lived in many places, but I've never seen a street pastor. Do you mean actually ministering to people (e.g. drunken people) or proselytising?

saraclara · 06/01/2020 00:16

Both my nearest towns do. One town's is called something different, but is otherwise the same.

I'm not religious, but I've met some of these guys through the organisation that I volunteer for, and they're great people. They do a really good job, and have saved one life that I know of directly.

leccybill · 06/01/2020 00:17

We have them. Grotty ex mining town in the NW.

FramingDevice · 06/01/2020 00:17

Not here. They’d be taking their lives in their hands.

FruityWidow · 06/01/2020 00:18

They were where I used to live but not on my current city.

DustyMaiden · 06/01/2020 00:18

Don’t know what you are talking about, So no.

saraclara · 06/01/2020 00:18

The guys I've met don't proselytise. They just make sure people get home safely/don't walk alone, and tend to people who are too drunk to stay safe.

Mixitupalot · 06/01/2020 00:26

Yep I live in NI, 10 a penny here!

HeddaGarbled · 06/01/2020 00:28

We have this drunk guy who harangues everyone with stuff about God. Does that count?

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 00:28

Never heard of them

I should maybe ask the local vicar if he’s working even longer hours than I thought!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 06/01/2020 00:29

They’re called Street Angels in my city, and generally wander about being helpful to people who are shitfaced.

bsc · 06/01/2020 00:31

@Mixitupalot I need better specs- I read NI as N1 and thought it was odd they'd congregate in North London... Blush

Isadora2007 · 06/01/2020 00:33

Yup. My retired dad is one. They’re not trying to convert people. They mostly are just looking out for very drunk people and being kind. They give out blankets and slippers and help people home safely etc.

ParkheadParadise · 06/01/2020 00:34

They have them in Glasgow City Centre. I was once given a pair of flip flops at 3am when I couldn't walk in my heels.😂😂😂

VeniceBeach · 06/01/2020 00:37

The three cities I've gone out in semi-regularly (ranging from very small to big) have all had street pastors.

Clymene · 06/01/2020 00:47

I have never ever come across it. It must be regional.

saraclara · 06/01/2020 00:51

Yep. It's street angels in my nearest town too. They're first aid trained, and give out coats, flip flops etc as well as just checking that people are okay. They're good at scooping up the emotional drunks and calming them down. Good listeners and not at all judgmental or preachy. Just kind.

danadas · 06/01/2020 00:57

We have a man who shouts at pigeons. On a good day.

Other than that, you take your life in your hands.

PotterHead1985 · 06/01/2020 01:01

I live in Ireland. I know what they are (thanks to the likes of cop shows on telly!!) but I'm pretty sure we don't have anything like that here at all.

NearlyOutedMyself · 06/01/2020 01:11

I've seen them. They offer a place for people to wait who have lost their friends on a night out or who want/need someone to talk to, tea or coffee to drink, escorting to taxis, flipflops handed out etc. They don't preach although the ones I've seen do use a church hall to operate from.

schoolcats · 06/01/2020 01:17

Like an approved version of the guardian angels you used to get on the tube ? No, not here.
