Yea I mean the kind people who walk around on a night out helping people who are drunk and in difficulty. I know they are very well respected here I’ve seen them help a lot of people, personally I’ve only ever needed flip flops as had lost my shoes Blush but they don’t preach about god to anyone lol.

Oh no... that’s street angels. Yeah we have them, they are lovely ppl who help out on the streets (non religious & religious).

I though you meant pastors as in standing in the streets with microphones teaching (shouting) the scriptures. If anyone else lives in NI I am sure they’re used to it, don’t bat an eyelid to it.

@bsc I am sure N1 is quite lovely - although I don’t think what I’ve described would fit in to well 😂

I am one! So they definitely have them in my city. It is organised by the local churches and most, but not all,of our volunteers come through the church, but we never mention God or faith to anyone. We just look after people who need help.

Not always totally drunk people, often people who have got separated from friends and are upset, people who have split up with their boyfriends or girlfriends and are upset, as well as people who are drunk, can't walk in their shoes, fallen over and hurt their ankles, that's a common one, people who have been in fights, lost their house keys...

It's total carnage out there on a Saturday night. Some people take it all in their stride but others can get really frightened by the situations they find themselves in.

Nitw1t · 06/01/2020 08:24

We have them in our town in the SE.

missyoumuch · 06/01/2020 08:28

They are volunteers from churches who go out into city centres on weekends to help people who are too drunk, ill, lost, etc. They don't proselytise. My church used to have a team for this and part of the training was that you're not meant to preach to people, just help them.

saraclara · 06/01/2020 08:39

@Mixitupalot the groups don't all have the same name. In some towns they're called street pastors, in some, street angels. They do the same thing though.

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 10:51

I would love it if we had these in London but no hope there, I guess.

Blingismything · 06/01/2020 10:58

Yes, we do I have a chat with them and get a lolly.

ShinyGiratina · 06/01/2020 11:06

We have them in our city. One of our readers at church is one, and they're just out to be supportive to people who need it for whatever reason.

Much more productive than the street preachers threatening fire and brimstone upon people not in their culty sect.

missyoumuch · 06/01/2020 13:29

@AutumnRose1 my church that had it was in East London.

fussychica · 06/01/2020 13:35

I doubt we have them. Small town in South West with a generally pretty elderly population.

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 13:44

miss I am going to ask the vicar. Also I’m going to ask him if he’s got any lollies 😂

aibutohavethisusername · 06/01/2020 13:47

We have them here. Large town in SE.

PlaygroundReviews · 06/01/2020 14:00

Street pastors was founded in Brixton, they are most definitely in London

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 14:01

Wow! I can’t believe I didn’t know that. My best mate lived in Brixton a long time and never mentioned it....

picklemepopcorn · 06/01/2020 14:13

They are in my small town and nearest city (east midlands). They are hugely helpful.

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/01/2020 15:01

I've been out and about a lot, but never encountered this - maybe because I've never needed them so not noticed them ministering?

They sound like wonderful people doing a great job. It's very rural where I live, so not as much need.

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 15:05

Tbh the main reason I’m annoyed not to have seen them is that I could have handed over any drunk person I’ve looked after. Luckily I don’t really go out enough for it to be an issue any more.

ShippingNews · 06/01/2020 15:06

My niece is one - a Street Angel. She is a nurse, and she walks around with another nurse in the most awful areas of the city. They minister to sick homeless people, talk to them about their health, and occasionally talk about spiritual matters. I think they are wonderful.

mencken · 06/01/2020 15:27

our county town has a lot of drinking venues and a fast-flowing river going through it, the Darwin award rate is rather high. It has street pastors. They are Christians although they aren't doing religion, they are trying to stop any more families being left without their breadwinner because he was a drunken dickhead who didn't think.

although I think giving out flipflops is a bit much, how are people supposed to learn?

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 15:34

So decent of people to do this

I have been quite grumpy on the occasions I’ve helped people. Well, apart from a 14 year old who’d been abandoned by her friends.

The only man I helped, it was because he was on crutches. Well, he was off them because he couldn’t stand up.

ManonBlackbeak · 06/01/2020 15:41

We have them here yes.Have done for the past few years.

BackforGood · 06/01/2020 19:15

They offer a place for people to wait who have lost their friends on a night out or who want/need someone to talk to, tea or coffee to drink, escorting to taxis, flipflops handed out etc. They don't preach

This ^

It is organised by the local churches and most, but not all,of our volunteers come through the church, but we never mention God or faith to anyone. We just look after people who need help.

and this.

A huge number of kind souls who give up their weekend nights to keep people safe and offer a listening ear to folk who - more often than not, but certainly not exclusively - have had a little too much to drink

Wonderful people Flowers

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 19:27

I think offering flip flops is good in the sense it might save the nhs having to deal with accident, injuries, infections etc.

Presume no one from this group actually goes into the home of the person they are helping?
