Sinusitis...I want to rip my own head off

Ok maybe that's an exaggeration but fucking hell, this is truly hideous. I've never had it before.

I'm on Sudafed tablets and nurofen plus. I also have a squirty nasal spray thing. They're not really touching the sides when it comes to pain. I swear my head is about to explode. The stuff that is appearing on my tissues is like something out of ghostbusters.

Does anyone have any miracle remedies, PLEASE?!

I agree with regular bowl of hot water with tiny bit of vicks vapour rub in it and towel over head. It does relieve the pressure and the pain. Sinusitis is only reason my doctor prescribes antibiotics for me.

FreeButtonBee · 05/01/2020 19:34

I ended up just getting codeine OTC - nothing else touched the pain! And then max strength Sudafed. It’s really grim.

userxx · 05/01/2020 19:35

Wilkos sinus tablets are very good and cheap too.

Just to extend my sympathies - I have never been so ill in my life as when I had this. I felt like my teeth were made of sponge.

Hope you feel better soon - steam worked for me too.

closetotheaction · 05/01/2020 19:36

Why do we even have sinuses?! What do they actually do??

If you can get some of this it works wonders....

www.nasodren.com

I think it's on amazon. I used it when I had sinusitis & it cleared up after 3 uses

PumpkinParent · 05/01/2020 19:45

Sympathies OP for I had chronic sinusitis for a long time (had an operation in the end). I know you’re not sure about nasal rinse kits but as PPs have said, I found Sterimar good, also Neil Med rinse kit and menthol crystals in hot water and inhaling the vapour. I found menthol crystals to be about the strongest thing to inhale and it really did help. Also, a really good blow of your nose if you can bear it first thing in the morning. Ibuprofen and paracetamol in combination for the pain. Get well soon.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/01/2020 19:50

Glad you’re feeling a bit better with the vicks / water action. The runny eyes and wet face are worth it!

Also what I do is really slowly inhale through my nose, while holding in one nostril with my finger then switching. Means they both get equal attention rather than your dominant nostril taking all the good stuff.

userxx · 05/01/2020 20:01

@closetotheaction

The sinuses lighten the skull or improve our voices, but their main function is to produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. This mucus layer protects the nose from pollutants, micro-organisms, dust and dirt. 🤓

Onynx · 05/01/2020 20:07

I find Tiger Balm massages into my forehead helps- DO NOT do this if you have sensitive skin as it will burn. I have chronic sinusitis & I find if I don't shift it fast enough it heads to my chest so I end up eventually getting antibiotics for a double whammy of chest and sinus infection. Be careful with the Sudafed- it makes me jittery so I can't sleep after taking it but Actifed has an antihistamine in it which can cause drowsiness. I hope you feel better soon x

SheShriekedShrilly · 05/01/2020 20:09

OP, a steam inhaler cup (just put that into the Amazon search box) avoids the scalded chin issue and is safer if you have kids around (less risk of knocking over boiling water). Also, your hair won’t smell of Vicks.

I had sinusitis when pregnant, every time I bent over to my toddler it hurt so badly I hard to just sit down right there on the floor until the world stopped spinning. That was not a fun few weeks.

Oldraver · 05/01/2020 20:09

Yes we have just bought a facial steamer with an attatchment for oils.

All the above, I get some relief form as hot as I can stand water in the shower, combined with pressure point massage.

Oh and when you do blow your nose do it slowely and one nostril at a time

Whe it was at it's worts I found on co-codomol took the edge off

Drum2018 · 05/01/2020 20:19

Not much use to you right now but the only thing that worked for me was 3 natural oils I bought from The Sinus Doctor - Joe Johnson - online a few years ago. As soon as I feel a sniffle I put the drops of oils into a facial steamer and inhale as much as I can (quite a sting off them) and so far they have worked a treat.

Greysparkles · 05/01/2020 20:23

Haven't RTFT but a hot bath with a load drops of olbas oil in helps me. You stink, but it works!

Pamspeople · 05/01/2020 20:27

The only thing that helps mine is the tablets with psuedoephedrine in - over the counter but not off the shelf, you have to ask for it at Boots or wherever.

I've tried all sorts of non drug treatments but have concluded that it's either the psuedoephedrine or sometimes antibiotics, nothing else shifts it.

You have my sympathies, it's really debilitating

SinkGirl · 05/01/2020 20:30

This is me right now too - started yesterday, but I have been prone to it for years, ever since I woke up the day after an operation on my abdomen with two swollen shut eyes (still have no idea how I got sinusitis from that - maybe the tubes?)

If you’re using Sudafed make sure it’s the pseudoephedrine stuff, not the other stuff. Day nurse contains it too. Must admit it’s not helping much but it’s better than nothing.

Hope it passes quickly Flowers

2kids2jobs · 05/01/2020 20:36

I feel your pain! I had this so bad a couple of years back that I went to the dentist and asked them to remove my 4 top back teeth. My sinuses above my cheek bones were so compacted and the pain was excruciating. I honestly thought it was my teeth. I was give strong antibiotics. Sudafed congestion and sinus headache helped me too as well as inhaling steam with olbas oil. I hope you feel better soon xx

MWNA · 05/01/2020 20:37

Did you try the facial massage?
I gave it a go. I haven't even got sinusitis and it felt relieving.

annielouise · 05/01/2020 22:02

Yes, same as a few other people - get something with the largest amount of pseudoephedrine in it - I think one of the Sudafed products has 60mg. Some only have 6.1mg and I found them a waste of money. Otrivine's Mu-Cron was discontinued unfortunately as it was amazing. I also find anything with phenylephedrine a waste of money but pseudoephedrine as high a dose as possible worked (for me anyway).

mrsed1987 · 05/01/2020 22:09

I had it a few montha ago. It was worse than when i gave birth.

Head over a bowl of boiling water really was the main thing that helped me

lotusbell · 05/01/2020 22:10

Regular steaming helps and something warm on the face like those wheat bags. I don't suffer with it nearly as much as I used to but i used to get it quite frequently, I have very narrow tubes apparently. Sudafed stopped being effective and a different tablet the chemist gave me made me nauseous. I remember once crying at the doctors to give me something as it felt like my face was in a vice. Then imagine my horror when I then got hideous toothache and found out that was my sinuses too - after years of it just affecting my cheekbones and eye sockets. You have all my sympathy, its bloody horrible.

lotusbell · 05/01/2020 22:11

@2kids2jobs, ahhh you too! I honestly thought mine was my teeth, too!

EffYouSeeKaye · 05/01/2020 22:16

Sinutab. Miracle stuff.

JamieFrasersSassenach · 05/01/2020 22:18

You have my sympathy OP - hideous illness!
In my experience the only painkillers that touch it are Sinutab - pharmacy only.
The hot steam is fab for immediate relief, but for me it doesn't last very long.
DH also suffers and he swears by Hopi ear candling.....
I do hope you get better soon ThanksThanksThanks
