What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners

Sorry for your loss 💐

bettybattenburg · 31/12/2019 13:53

After today everybody born in the 1990s will be out of their teenage years, that seems almost impossible.

Drabarni · 31/12/2019 13:59

Well out of their teen years. Grin Born early ninetees, now late twenties.

My DS was right at the end of the 90s so is only just into his 20s.

SpaceCadet4000 · 31/12/2019 14:06

I was 9 years old and we went to our next-door neighbour's house as they were hosting a party with fireworks. My overriding memory is that, halfway through the party, I got the shits. Delightful!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 31/12/2019 14:06

Emotional that should say.

IpanemaGallina · 31/12/2019 14:07

Edinburgh with friends, food and drinks and their house in Leith followed by the street party. Good times.

DavetheCat2001 · 31/12/2019 14:10

I was on Kuta beach in Bali with friends drinking champagne and dodging firecrackers!

Icanflyhigh · 31/12/2019 14:12

I had just turned 21 and was going to a millennium eve party - black tie etc. Was, very posh, I got horribly drunk and dont remember most of it!

ChinUpChestOut · 31/12/2019 14:14

I was working in SE Asia, and went to Bangkok to spend NYE with old friends, and took my 6 month old DS with me. We had a party in the compound where they lived, and I have a photo of me running upstairs to grab DS at midnight and give him a big kiss. I'm wearing a 2000 tiara, and looking very not sober.

It's a lifetime ago - the compound is now demolished, 1 of the friends later died in a horrid accident, 3 of my friends took early retirement and life now bears no resemblance to the exotic overseas lifestyle it was then.

On the upside, I didn't know it but I had just met the man who is now my DH, together for 19 years, married for 13. When we married he adopted DS, and we have spent today with me trying to talk him out of giving DS too big a present for his 21st birthday later this year. Softest guy in the world, and will do anything for his family. I had no clue that was waiting for me.

cricketmum84 · 31/12/2019 14:14

I was 16, had a night in with mum, step dad and sis. Step dad proposed to mum at midnight. It was lovely ❤️❤️

AwkwardSquad · 31/12/2019 14:18

In Rome; at midnight on a roof terrace watching fireworks go off all around the city (and on the next rooftop to where we were standing). It was amazing.

Camomila · 31/12/2019 14:21

I was 12, we had a family party and invited all the cousins as their parents were working (owned a restaurant). Our parents let us share 1 bacardi breezer between the 5 of us DC for the toast Grin
At midnight we watched the local fireworks and had a great view - held in a church field at the bottom of the hill and we were at the top. Felt like they were coming into the house!

girlofthenorth · 31/12/2019 14:23

Was with some really good mates getting drunk and smoking myself silly having an amazing time . Literally days later I found I was pregnant with DD1 so that was my last cigarette! Our friends were lovely - it's sad my friends DP later passed away . It remains a very happy but poignant memory .

ManonBlackbeak · 31/12/2019 14:23

My parents had a big party in their house, and all us kids sat around the television watching the new year arrive around the world. I still recall how shit and disappointing the London fireworks were compared with pretty much everywhere else, thankfully we've learned from that! Also remember the first new bulletin after midnight where they said 'its January the 1st 2000' and how strange it sounded.

A lot of people who were at that party, family and friends, have passed away since then. I'll be thinking of them tongight.

Justmuddlingalong · 31/12/2019 14:25

I was getting my ducks in a row for the new year, new decade and new millennium. 20 years on i'm grateful I jumped, all these years since have been the best of my life.

Yestermost · 31/12/2019 14:26

By the river in London then a party. Was fun remember walking back to someones flat and people were going to work. Not a single photo exists (thank fuck!) How times change.

poppy1973 · 31/12/2019 14:29

At Cardiff - watching Manic Street Preachers. Great night, had seated tickets.

littlemissalwaystired · 31/12/2019 14:30

I'd not long turned 3. Probably threw a few tantrums then went to bed at 7pm like usualGrin

NoncePieforSanta · 31/12/2019 14:30

Partying like it was 1999 at a research institute in East Jerusalem. We decided to start the party in time for the first resident's country of origin - I was pretty much fucked by the time it was midnight in Israel, and didn't make it to midnight in the UK Grin

That was also - coincidentally - the last time I went out for NYE Grin

Oh-and I was diagnosed with "heavy metal poisoning" on NYD that year, so fuck knows what we were drinking that had arsenic in it Envy

poorbuthappy · 31/12/2019 14:30

Working in Yates wine lodge.
I'd split up with boyfriend about 4 months previously and move back home to parents with only the clothes on my back.
Then got 2 jobs to make up for it!!
I worked Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve that year. Made a lot of money in tips!!

Benidorm Old Town with a group of friends. Bawled uncontrollably at the Spanish midnight, by the time the UK midnight arrived I was snogging a random Scotsman 🤣

Dogsaresomucheasier · 31/12/2019 14:34

In a bar with my boyfriend, now husband.
