What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

At Gatecrasher at the Don Valley Stadium, wearing a gold ball gown, green hair and full Crasher kid make up.

Trancing it up, and having a ball!

IamMadameX · 31/12/2019 11:47

ill in bed with that awful flu virus going around

safariboot · 31/12/2019 11:50

I was at home with DM. That evening I felt a strange wave of energy passing. Sounds woo I know, I don't know what to make of it, but I definitely felt something.

Of course, I should have added, as @InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud says, life is so much better now!

kazza446 · 31/12/2019 11:54

I was in New York with my exh. We booked our first holiday on the internet after finding mega cheap last minute flights. I remember frantically dialling up the internet as we decided to book flights on a whim. No wifi in those days! We had a great time in Times Square watching in the new year!

ByAppointmentTo · 31/12/2019 11:58

In Brighton with now DH and a group of friends. Didn't drink much as had to be back in London the following day and go into work to test that our systems hadn't been hit by the millennium bug.

I also remember it being impossible to send text messages at midnight as the networks were busy.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 31/12/2019 11:59

At home, now-ex finished work at 10pm NYE so we had a glass of fizz watching the Big Ben festivities on TV.

CormoranStrike · 31/12/2019 12:00

We had a murder mystery dinner party in our house; kids got sent to bed to nap but were allowed up for the millennium. It was fab

U2HasTheEdge · 31/12/2019 12:01

I went to a party at my mums' neighbour's house. I had a 6 month old son and I was 18. My friend who I brought along drank too much and bashed her head and needed an ambulance.

Garbosdinner · 31/12/2019 12:04

I was 26 in London and was working until 10.30pm. Then shot over to a mates for an awesome house party.

ChefsFloozie · 31/12/2019 12:10

On top of the South Downs looking across at all the Beacons down to the sea. Lovely memories

GalactiCat · 31/12/2019 12:13

gamerchick · 31/12/2019 12:14

GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 31/12/2019 12:17

Mum had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Was going to spend the evening with her but she told me to bugger off and go to a friends NYE party.

I drunk a whole bottle of Malibu..... dear god the hangover.....

Likethebattle · 31/12/2019 12:20

I was 21 and was with my first serious boyfriend doing what couples that age do when they get a house to themselves. His mum, dad and brother were away.

champagneandfromage50 · 31/12/2019 12:22

Sadly I was at my mums as my dad had died the day before. Worst time of my life

managedmis · 31/12/2019 12:23

God this brings back memories, I went to an awful party at ex boyfriend's mate. Really shit.

Dollywilde · 31/12/2019 12:27

I was 10. My parents and aunty dragged me and my cousins to a grown up drinks party which was totally dull and I wound up having to make up games for my sister and cousins so we wouldn't die of boredom.

However, I was wearing a new chinese style dress from Tammy and thought I looked the Absolute Bollocks, so it wasn't all bad. Plus I got a light up yo yo from my parents the next day as a thank you Grin

MrsScrubbithatescleaning · 31/12/2019 12:27

It was the last family party with my dear mum and despite being the poorest member of the family at the time, I bought virtually all the food and drink. Mum realised a bit later and wrote a letter to thank me and saying how proud she was and how much she loved me.
It was a one-off as she'd never written to me before and sadly, she died unexpectedly fairly soon afterwards.
I've laminated that letter and re-read it occasionally when a I need a 'mum hug'.

NaturalBornWoman · 31/12/2019 12:28

We had a party as we usually did in those days when we all had youngish children and it was hard to get sitters. All our friends plus their children would pile round to ours as we had the biggest and most party friendly house. We used to set up a sort of dormitory for the children in the playroom, I made loads of food, my sister used to make epic party cds. Good memories.

MrsMoastyToasty · 31/12/2019 12:28

I'd forgotten about preparing for the Y2K bug (my department already operated around the clock). I think that they were expecting the water to go off, for reservoir pumps to stop functioning and sewerage treatment works to fail. (Nothing happened! I took one call all night long and that was from a colleague).

With a bunch of my friends in a cottage in Cumbria (I was in my 20s)

fishonabicycle · 31/12/2019 12:31

Friends ran a pub in Victoria, so we were there, then by the Thames for the fireworks, then back to the pub for a party til about 6 am. Crawled back to Charing cross to wait for the first train home.

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 31/12/2019 12:32

Working hard in the restaurant, making sure everyone had s good time! To be fair it was a good evening and we had our own party afterwards, then had two hours kip and back at work for breakfast shift.

Seeing the sun rise on a new millennium was something that I'll never forget however, that was special
