What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

On a rooftop terrace in London where we had a great view of the fireworks down the river. Felt like the ideal way to celebrate the millennium.

PandaG · 31/12/2019 10:53

Friends for dinner with our fortnight old baby, then to church for a huge party. Home about 1am, Baby slept for 6 hours straight, most sleep I had for about a month!

Biscuitsandteaplease · 31/12/2019 10:55

I was 9, I spent the night in my new inflatable chair with party poppers watching the fireworks on TV and talking to family from USA on the phone for the first time, despite the telephone bill cost!
Exciting stuff Grin

I was 32 weeks pregnant with my first son and blissfully happy. My in-laws had a party and set off fireworks in the garden.
I lay on the floor and all the little cousins did the wedding ring test in me to see I I was having a boy or a girl.
Dh was on call for the y2k bug.

Biscuitsandteaplease · 31/12/2019 10:56

Oh and cuddling my millennium bug rucksack 🎒

Boohooyouho · 31/12/2019 10:56

I was 18. My friend had a house party and we both peaked far too early and passed out well before midnight. Briefly woke up at midnight for about 10 minutes before returning to bed.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 31/12/2019 10:56

We went to a small seaside town in Scotland, with my parents and grandparents and my boyfriend of 4 months (now DH).

It was a beautiful night, we had steak and lobster in the hotel then everyone came out onto the town square to watch the fireworks and there was some bagpipes and dancers.

It's my favourite place in the UK and we've been back loads of times with the kids.

We had been invited to three parties in different parts of the country. We had moved in to our new home two weeks before Christmas and had DH family for Christmas. We decided to just stay at home by ourselves. We had sausage, mash and peas and were drunk by about 8pm. We went outside to watch the fireworks from neighbouring houses. We were newly wed and at that madly in love at it like rabbits stage.

The party in London got involved with the tube having issues and they had to walk for about two hours to get home. The family party had DH Great Aunt fall ill just after midnight and she was rushed in to hospital and died a couple of days later. So we were glad we missed those two.

It was actually the only NYE we have ever had by ourselves. I look back with delight at that memory. Still in the same my house, I love him more now but in a calmer way, it’s hard to explain.

Lying in bed after cancelling plans to spend the night at an expensive hotel with family due to a suspected miscarriage. Said suspected miscarriage is now 19 years old and still an adorable pain in the rear!!

autumnboys · 31/12/2019 11:01

Newly wed & living in London. We went to Embankment with some friends of ours.

Cineraria · 31/12/2019 11:02

A friend and I got tickets for a party in a London hotel that a friend of hers was organising. It was fun. I think we enjoyed dressing up ready to go as much as the party. We went out at midnight to see if we could see the fireworks as they weren't far away but could only hear them. A local friend who worked in IT had opted to work that night (really good pay) and drove us home when he was finished.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 31/12/2019 11:03

At a party with my now exDh's aunt and uncle and all their family. Excited about millennium bug 😂😂 I was also excited as I was flying to Zimbabwe a few days later to work there for a few months. It was the turning point for my marriage but that's another story!

EleanorLavish · 31/12/2019 11:03

DH and I weren’t married then. We decided to avoid all the fuss about millennium bug etc and just booked a holiday. We went to Cuba and stayed in a gorgeous hotel in pristine sandy beach. Lovely people there, we made some friends. Had a massive party NYE. It was brilliant.

gamerwidow · 31/12/2019 11:05

E’s, fireworks at Blackheath and an all night house party.
Tonight will be doing takeaway and a film with my family.

Branleuse · 31/12/2019 11:06

Had flu, but was in recovery, whilst my mum was in full throes. I went over to hers with soup, but she couldnt even get up to watch fireworks.
It was pretty horrible. We normally celebrate

CharlotteMD · 31/12/2019 11:08

Working a 15 hour shift in an inner London A&E dept.

CointreauVersial · 31/12/2019 11:08

It wasn't the best NYE, to be honest. We were staying at PIL's, in the west of Ireland. They lived above a pub; it was vast and unmodernised, with no heating. I had a 6 week old PFB, and was exhausted, so no desire to go out partying; I left DH to it and went to bed. It was so unbelievably cold in our bedroom I actually feared DS would freeze to death, so brought him into bed with me. I got up briefly at midnight to toast the new decade in the pub downstairs. MIL and SIL both had horrendous colds, so were also staying in. DH then got locked out and had to wake me by throwing stones at the window at 3am. Happy days!

itbemay1 · 31/12/2019 11:09

Watched the fireworks on Blackheath common pregnant with DD.

NorthEndGal · 31/12/2019 11:09

Moving house, surrounded by unopened boxes, and we had an earthquake at 12:02 am!
It was only a 3.4, but enough we felt it

Neverendinglists · 31/12/2019 11:10

In London, by the river, with uni mates for reunion - my overall hazy memory was that it was amazing. Thinking about it though: It was rammed, cold, we lost people, bumped into people we knew unexpectedly, had scandal.... Must tell myself that more often... That in years to come I'll remember the good stuff more than the bad 😁

Lemontwist · 31/12/2019 11:10

Me and my sister had been watching the news seeing other countries bringing in the new millennium and decided at the last minute to hop on a train to London (about a 3 hour train journey). We watched the fireworks from London Bridge then just walked the streets drinking in the atmosphere. We then had a very long cold wait for a train to take us home again the next day Grin

WombleOfTheThighs · 31/12/2019 11:11

I brought in the new year with an elderly man, 2 middle-aged women and my sister. PARTY CENTRAL! Grin

Bbq1 · 31/12/2019 11:11

1999 was an amazing year for me. We got married in the May and still together now, 22 years together and counting and we moved into our first home in the November. We spent NYE with my mum and dad at their home after going out for a few drinks first. I clearly remember kissing on the stroke of midnight outside as the sky was filled with fireworks. We couldnt get a taxi so walked home and I remember my mum had to lend me some trainers as I could'nt walk far in my heels!! I remember all the panic about the supposed Millenium Bug too!

3teens2cats · 31/12/2019 11:13

Heavily pregnant with ds1. I had perfected how to balance a champagne flute on the top of my bump! We went to friends house and then into the city centre to watch fireworks. Dh took me home not long after midnight and then went back out to another friends house until silly o'clock. Ds was born a couple of weeks later.

Flatwhite101 · 31/12/2019 11:14

I refuse to believe 1999 was 20 years ago. Just no.
