What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

I was 21 and with a group of 8 or 9 best friends were in central London. We did a bar crawl and some sights before finishing on Embankment for 9ish.

We had lots of champagne, lots of fun and danced like crazy with strangers from all over the world.

After the fireworks we danced our way home and spent the next day recovering with more booze and pizza.

I'm still close friends with most of them and we'll be messaging each other from four sides of the country tonight. Probably all in our Pjs! If you'd asked us in 1999 we would have said we'd meet up and have every new year together doing similar. In 2019 we all have young kids and only manage to meet up 3 times a year!

I got shoved out of the door at a minute to midnight with a bottle of whisky and a lump of coal, as I was deemed to be most appropriate First Foot (I live in the NE, first footing is a big thing here).

In Edinburgh, a house party, wandered down for fireworks then back to the house party again. Spent most of the time wondering how to dump my then-boyfriend without being a complete bitch and doing it at New Year. Finally dumped him a week later and all the built-up frustration of waiting to do it meant I wasn't very kind about it. I should have done it way before we even got to Christmas or New Year, but I was an 18-year-old wimp Blush

Watched the Sydney fireworks at Watsons Bay in Sydney harbour. Then we wandered down to Bondi Beach (which took a couple of hours), crashed the dance party on the beach and watched the sun rise. There were a lot of bodies on the beach as we left around 7am

At Vague in Leeds. Amazing night.

jamdhanihash · 31/12/2019 11:20

Went to see Texas at Edinburgh castle (shit) then snuck into the street party with DSis and the lovely ex (overrated). So young we didn't care about the cold but think it was my last outdoor Hogmanay.

RedRec · 31/12/2019 11:21

Joined in the Bhangra dancing on our street (best fun ever) then drove into my office in London as was on call for the 'Y2K bug' from 10pm. Of course nothing bad happened as we had spent years preparing for it.

iWantToBreakBrie · 31/12/2019 11:23

I was a student. We held a house party that started at noon and drank to each New Years Day as it arrived around the world. It seemed like a good idea at the time but as I recall, I only made it to New Delhi (about 7pm our time) before the drink was too much and I sloped off to bed Grin

Crawley65 · 31/12/2019 11:23

Went into central London early afternoon and stayed to watch the fireworks on one of the bridges. I was pregnant at the time and knackered at the end of it. No booze and scary amounts of people. Do remember it though. Loads of other years I remember very little!

milliefiori · 31/12/2019 11:25

Had my parents and their best friend over for dinner then took a bus into the centre of London to watch the Millenial fireworks from St Pauls.

RJnomore1 · 31/12/2019 11:25

I went to my adored granny’s funeral I’m the morning, then went back to hospital where later that day I was discharged and took my oldest daughter home at teatime. She was five days old.

Bit of an up and down one for me.

IMWang · 31/12/2019 11:27

I was 10 and at a party with my mum and dad. I had on a silver boob tube, matching silver peddle pushers and I was covered in glitter roll on. The millennium bug was the talk of the party and I remember being terrified it was somesort of robot uprising

Biglumpycustard · 31/12/2019 11:30

I was 18 and just had my first son at the end of October. lived in flat and I remember at midnight a bird flew into the flat, the small kitchen window was open.

FLOrenze · 31/12/2019 11:33

My DH worked for an American Company . They had booked 6 luxury suites at a Knightsbridge Hotel for their executives. None of them wanted to come so we and some other members of staff were given them. Three nights of heaven with all meals included.

Thatagain · 31/12/2019 11:35

ACouchOfOnesOwn · 31/12/2019 11:35

On-call for the international power company that I worked for. Didn't get called in but was paid an amazing amount of overtime just for being available Grin

TiddyTid · 31/12/2019 11:36

At my parents for a buffet supper, watched Big Ben then went home to bed, got up really early, drove to the coast to watch the first sunrise of the millennium.

Cakewineorgin · 31/12/2019 11:37

I spent it alone after turning down a holiday to spend it with now ex-fiancé, who was then offered triple time to work. With a house and wedding to pay for we couldn’t turn it down. However every time I phoned he didn’t answer, phoning back shortly after with what sounded like a party in the background. He explained it as music in the staff room. I really should have the seen red flag bunting!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 31/12/2019 11:37

I was in a dodgy club in Bath.

RJnomore1 · 31/12/2019 11:38

@Thatagain isn’t he 20?

We just had a birthday too

ChocChipWookie · 31/12/2019 11:39

There was a street party. I'm told it was amazing. I was out of it with full blown flu and didn't surface until about the 6th.
The only time I've ever had real flu and the old adage about being able to move for a £50 note is very much true.

FLOrenze · 31/12/2019 11:41

One of the funniest things happened over that week too. I worked in a bank and they were worried that there would be a run on cash. So all branches were delivered a “Millennium Brick”. This was many thousands far in excess of our usual holding cash and security was very tight . They were to be delivered to the branch disguised as Stationery. Unfortunately the person designated to receive it was off sick and there was a breakdown of confusion as to the receipt. When the code word was received to ensure delivery, panic ensued as no-one could remember receiving it. It was sitting in the main banking hall on a Customer Service Desk. The person who did receive it thought it was Stationery. It had been there for nearly an hour.

Nononononono33 · 31/12/2019 11:41

Had a small house party for some friends with my then-boyfriend. It’s a bit weird to think that I’m not in touch with any of them any more.

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 31/12/2019 11:41

I was dealing with my DD who was 7.her epilepsy was particularly bad that Christmas and continued over the new year.

She was fitting as Big Ben struck.
None of this was helped by the disintegration of my marriage

We went on to split up three months later.

20 yrs later I am married to DH (16 yrs together) and we have an amazing new grandson

Life is so much better

Vintagevixen · 31/12/2019 11:42

I was working the night shift in ITU at Barts hospital in London, surrounded by huge oxygen cylinders in case the Y2K bug affected the ventilators etc. Midnight came and....no shutdown!

Remember seeing the glow of the Thames fireworks in the windows and hearing the crowds walking home when they ended.

I still have the souvenir bone China tea mug we all got given as a thankyou 😂😂
