This new decade I will... a thread for big but attainable goals

Run the London marathon. Currently a big fat couch potato who gets out of breath running for the bus, but I’ve lived near the route for two decades and it’s caught my imagination.

Write a book. Have never written anything longer than an essay, but have read a lot of books and thought, “I can do better.” Let’s see if I can.

Get new letters before or after my name (not including Mrs, although staying married is definitely at the top of my unwritten list).

What are your big goals for the new decade? (Let’s limit them to three year to encourage prioritisation and actually achieving them).

Get my PhD (hopefully starting September 2020).

BooseysMom · 29/12/2019 15:35

Great thread! I was reading last year's NY resolutions and i have managed 1.5 out of 3. As it's 2020 i feel i have to try and achieve something great but what to do with so little money? A good question! I would like to apply to Garden Rescue but too late for applications so i'll have to try and rescue it myself. That's enough for me tbh!

  1. Learn to play the piano at a beginners beginners beginners level within 3 years. 😂
  2. finally get accepted into the level 3 course that I’ve worked hard for.
  3. become proficient in another craft based hobby, perhaps cross stitch? I’d like it to be useful and environmentally friendly which is quite difficult! Lovely thread 👍

Lose several stone (hope it doesn't take the decade!!)

Become teetotal

Overcome my self consciousness about my Psoriasis and take my disabled baby swimming (its wonderful exercise for her low tone! Currently dad takes her but I want to join a weekly class with her)

Finally clear our debts (3 children, 3 maternity leaves, 2 house moves and going part time means it may well take the decade to do this!!)

Learn to drive (I live centrally so there has never been any need but now I have kids so public transport isnt as easy)

popcorndiva · 29/12/2019 15:47
  1. get a dog
  2. see the northern lights
  3. retrain
MiseryChops · 29/12/2019 15:53

It’s almost impossible to get a spot in the London marathon unless your capable of raising over £2000 for charity (if you secrure a charity place)

So may I recommend changing your ‘run the London marathon’ to ‘run a uk marathon’

Become debt free, reach my target weight, learn a new skill/hobby (undecided on this at present...maybe a language, thinking about getting into gardening?)

scousadelic · 29/12/2019 16:13

I'm going to continue with weight loss and getting healthier. I want to do that until that becomes my normal way of life

I also want to develop a gratitude habit to enable me to appreciate life more

StrongerThanIThought76 · 29/12/2019 16:16

I did the London marathon one in 2018 - yes I did raise £1500 for a charity very very close to my heart and intertwined in our lives. I applied for - and got - a ballot place last year, so I will be running again for the same charity but without the financial obligation.

Mine is to save money by not getting takeaway so often and cooking at home.

Also get some sort of domestic organisation going!!

Niyamamama · 29/12/2019 16:16

The usual ones that are there every single year... such as pay off debts, eat better quality food, move more, lose a bit more weight, try to save and take DD on trips overseas. Some years I achieve them, some years I don't! But the big one for the decade for me would be that I really really want to move to the countryside.
