This new decade I will... a thread for big but attainable goals

Run the London marathon. Currently a big fat couch potato who gets out of breath running for the bus, but I’ve lived near the route for two decades and it’s caught my imagination.

Write a book. Have never written anything longer than an essay, but have read a lot of books and thought, “I can do better.” Let’s see if I can.

Get new letters before or after my name (not including Mrs, although staying married is definitely at the top of my unwritten list).

What are your big goals for the new decade? (Let’s limit them to three year to encourage prioritisation and actually achieving them).

This year I want to:

  1. Read 12 books minimum (I don't make enough time for it)
  1. I want to prioritise the gym and fitness. I would love a summer 6 pack! Vain, but true.
  1. I want to cook more often. Currently my partner does all the cooking and I fell out of the habit of being involved. Even if I make something once or twice a week I'll be happy.
  1. Apply for tonnes of jobs. I want to change my job and have moaned about it for too long. Recently I started applying for jobs and will continue until I get the change I need.
Mixitupalot · 29/12/2019 20:58

Move into our new home (first owned home) which we are so excited for!

Learn patience and to be kinder, my career has turned me into a demon the last 9 years so seriously considering a career change

Travel loads more with my family & teach the kids about life.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/12/2019 21:05

Buy a house. I am hoping to do that in 2020. As a single mum that will be a life changer for me and DS.

Stay in the same workplace and progress in my career. I have had multiple jobs over the years and finally am happy at work, I love the company and want to stay there.

Travel, travel, travel. I have been to 17 countries and want that number to reach 40 over the next decade.

Learn to bake well. I do lots of cooking from scratch, but can't bake and rarely do it.

Be happy. Yes it's cheesy, but it's the most important thing.

Rocket1982 · 29/12/2019 21:06

For the next decade:

  • Raise 2 children
  • Learn Italian
  • Take up new arts/crafts hobby (mosaic?)
  • Do a full triathlon (have done 2 half distance ones but years ago). Work on maintaining a decent level of fitness rather than fluctuating.
  • Get a promotion
  • Move house
MulticolourMophead · 29/12/2019 21:08

My own home. A big thing for me, as a now single parent, and having had my funds drained by my ex.

Travel, as my ex never wanted to.

Meet someone new who isn't abusive like ex. Might be a bit tricky in my early 50s, but I reckon doable.

Learn to play drums, and maybe join a band.

MulticolourMophead · 29/12/2019 21:11

I forgot to add that I'm applying to do my first degree from next year, at the age of 51 Grin

And I'm losing weight. I was thinking about parkrun, but would it be okay to start by walking? I'd still be able to cheer myself up with ever-better times as I move into jogging it as I go.

There's a wedding I'll be attending in the early part of 2021, and I want to rock a much slimmer me in a killer dress.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/12/2019 21:57

Run a marathon
Sing on stage Nancy in Oliver in some context
Travel more

Plus about a million other New Years resolutions, I always make hundreds!

eyeswideshit · 29/12/2019 22:04

Be able to speak fluent Icelandic, go back to work, get rid of as many responsibilities as I can, see the world, more exercise.

Disillusioneddaisy · 29/12/2019 22:07

Retrain/new job.
Lose two stone.
Get married (engaged but no wedding plans)
Become healthier in mind and body.

BuddhaAtSea · 29/12/2019 22:29

@MulticolourMophead of course you can walk it. You could also do the C25K, it’s a free NHS app, the volunteers will walk with you, it’s a bit more gentle. Don’t feel put out if we cheer you on during and at the end, we wait for everybody, it’s not an issue, nobody runs alone. And do join us for a coffee at the end!

MontanaSky · 29/12/2019 22:38
  1. Lose 3st and maintain it
  2. Save money (have 6mths salary buffer)
  3. Qualify in CIPD and increase salary
  4. Family holidays to Efteling and Walt Disney World
  5. Use my driving licence
Boopear · 29/12/2019 23:58

Pay off mortgage

Black belt in my martial art

Walk the West Highland way

Macca84 · 30/12/2019 00:05
  1. Re-take up weightlifting, yoga and tennis
  2. Become debt-free (aim was for 2020, but at least I'm very close!)
  3. Become a better parent. Lack of 1) and abundance of 2) have added to symptoms of an illness which causes severe fatigue and stress of debt has made me lack in this area slightly.

Loving the positivity on this thread! Good luck to all Flowers

ColouredPolkaDots · 30/12/2019 00:20

Sort my house out! I moved in 6 months ago and still cannot afford carpet. It'll take forever but I'll get there.

Have another DC. DS is my world but I'd love another. I'm single so this may take a long time.

Get better friends and form strong friendships.

Go on a holiday. And skiing or at least somewhere snowy.

Shower my DS with love and happiness every day. Protect him. Make sure he has a childhood that is amazing in every way I can offer.

Go to Disneyland.

SleepDeprivedElf · 30/12/2019 12:41
  1. Build the next stage of my career - which means I need to take myself a bit more seriously!
  2. Get a permanent job - not a contract
  3. Make a decision about where to live and invest in a house
  4. Continue to care for my lovely DH and kiddos
  5. Find a way to meet some of my needs some of the time
JenaWren · 30/12/2019 13:17

Brilliant thread!

This year I want to:

Run another half marathon and beat my last time
Conquer my fear of heights and head up somewhere high
Walk part of one of the Caminos
Carry on camping Grin
Open my heart to love (and the rather lovely man I have recently started seeing)

soulrunner · 30/12/2019 13:31
  • Do my masters ( starts April) and thereafter upgrade career- been coasting too long.
  • move back to uk ( 2022)
  • Run Boston marathon as a qualifier ( 2021)
  • Run the Appalachian trail ( pipe dream).
  • Get a Ultra Trail Australia 100k silver buckle ( complete course sub 14 hrs)
ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 30/12/2019 13:35
  1. Get a dog
  2. Get DD into a decent secondary school (she’s currently in Year 5)
  3. Become a part time judge
  4. Revive the languages I learnt when I was younger

Great thread, thanks!

MummytoCSJH · 30/12/2019 13:38

What a fantastic thread! I've never ever stuck to a New Years resolution- think this may be the way to go!
I’ll go in order of how long I think they’ll take - sorry if I haven't followed your rules OP!

Pass my driving test (10th Jan!)

Get to my target/healthy weight and stay there (within the next year)

Complete my degree with a 2:1 or above (finish May 2021/2022 depending on if I do placement)

Clear all my debts (should be within 3 years on my current income and payments, 5 max just in case of emergencies)

Buy a house (the sooner my debt is paid of the sooner I can put that amount into savings!)

Start a hobby which is for me and me only, and set aside time to do it/learn. Even if it’s just 1 hour a week - at some point I will find something I want to stick with! (Anytime within the next decade Grin)

mumdom · 30/12/2019 13:43

Completely thrilling that I’m not the only one aiming for big dreams.

I’m on an Accountability thread over on the Style & Beauty section. Would it be helpful to re-start this thread on New Year’s Day and use it to motivate each other?

I’ve already decided this is going to be my first stone cold sober NY Eve. Not being hungover is definitely a tiny step towards becoming a marathon runner!

NowWeSuckingDiesel · 30/12/2019 13:49

Be debt free with an improved credit score.

Be the kinder, more patient version of me

Be involved entirely in life, no longer standing on the side lines

Gaelforce · 30/12/2019 15:17

Live in a city in a different country
Stop wishing away time
Give more hugs to my DDs

Summerandsparkle · 30/12/2019 15:18

Hang up my clothes after I try them on.

Get into a size 10 dress.

Try not to accidentally swear on impulse.

Drink more water.

mumdom · 31/12/2019 07:59

@Crunchymum I also had psoriasis for years. Have you had vitamin D testing? Getting my vitamin D3 levels to 120 (through hardcore vitamin supplementation for an unrelated medical issue) over about a year made me asymptomatic.

OP posts:
Crunchymum · 31/12/2019 08:47

@mumdom unfortunately I have developed Psoriatic Arthritis so I'm on some pretty potent medication! It has helped the arthritis side of things (which is fab as I couldn't walk for 6 months last year!) but it's made no improvement to the actual psoriasis... its meant to tackle both.

Ach well, at least I can walk? Grin
