Run/jog/walk a mile a day in 2020. Join the bandwagon early

I have completed couch to 5k in the past
I have given up on running in the past
I have tried and failed in the past

But I have a plan for 2020

I am going to run/jog a mile a day for the year.

I know some days I will be knackered and fail but if I do I will do more the next day to make up for it.

Anyone like to join me ?

Walked 1.6miles today, I have completed day one 👍

hopefulhalf · 02/01/2020 16:54

Just done 1.5 miles, just before it got dark

birdsarecute45 · 02/01/2020 16:55

I have been trying to think about how to fit it in and I have a plan- near us we have a very very large park that seques into a football pitch. I am not sure how far around it is but I plan to leave for the school run 15 mins early with DS1 and DS2 and we will walk/run around it.

If I could get to the close of the year running all the way it would be an achievement!

I'd love to join you! Since DS2 joined year 6 I've stopped doing the school run ( after 10 years!) and am missing the 3 miles of walking every day. I can't cope with stepping on the scales - I know I'm around 16/17 stones- but suddenly I'm struggling to reach the floor so know I'm gaining weight! Sad

theSnuffster · 02/01/2020 17:06

Great idea. I wouldn't manage a mile a day but could do the 7 miles over the course of the week I reckon.

Miljea · 02/01/2020 17:16

I've been thinking about this- the obvious way for me to do it would be to use the park and ride and walk from it to work (3 days a week), but: there's always a 'but'!- I don't know how early I'd have to get to the PnR to get a park; and I currently pay someone to park in their driveway, £30 a month close to work (the PnR would be free for me)- but I am worried about losing my driveway parking space; or for 'annoying' my host by paying then not using it (it's a bit of a faff for them, as they have 2 spaces and 2 cars, now as their DD is on a gap year, so they park one of their cars on the road with a permit they have to pay for).

Also, to be honest my coal-face NHS job can be pretty demanding, and I wonder how much I will fancy the trudge up the hill, in the rain and dark to the PnR, plus the extra hour it will all add to my working day!

I am going to have to think about it!

Just 0.75 mile for me today, but I did walk up 8 flights of stairs in a multi storey car park which must count for something.

Egghead68 · 02/01/2020 20:34

Ran a mile (flat) and walked 4 and a bit (gills).

Day 2 done, I went out for a walk at lunchtime and did almost exactly a mile. Still very stiff and sore from my long (for me!) walk yesterday though so may take a day off tomorrow.

Emmapeeler1 · 02/01/2020 21:13

1.5 miles, my walk to the bus then to work (then back.)

miljea I pondered the same issue for months (before DH sold a car forcing me to get the bus anyway). I eventually decided that walking to/from the P&R was too far and that I’d most likely bail! Could you fit in a walk at lunchtime? Your P&R may be a nicer walk then mine which is along some very busy roads.

WeirdPookah · 03/01/2020 11:04

2 miles walked today. With buggy again.

And of all times for my trainers to give up, worn them out, spilt on the bottom and soggy foot. The stores will be full of full price stuff to catch people's new resolutions!

Newyearnewarse · 03/01/2020 11:42

2 miles done today.
@WeirdPookah that is so annoying!

I have to de-Christmas the house today so I am faffing about on here instead.

I wasn't going to do much today, partly because my legs are still a bit sore, and partly because of work restrictions today, but checking this thread has inspired me! I'm currently sat in my car in between appointments eating my lunch, next to a large green space. Instead of just driving off, I am going to walk to my next appointment (5 mins away), then walk around the green space for a bit afterwards before driving to my next client. Not sure if I'll manage a full mile, but it will still be more than I would have done without this thread (the sunshine also helps!)

SallyLovesCheese · 03/01/2020 13:12

2 miles today! Lovely woodland walk pushing the baby in his pushchair. I'm now trying not to eat my weight in homemade flapjack!

Newyearnewarse · 03/01/2020 13:37

I'm impressed @DebbieFiderer . It does help if the sun is shining and I agree about the thread helping .I have done loads more than I would do normally but it feels doable rather than a huge thing that is out of my reach.

1.4 miles jogged today, such a lovely sunny day where I am - makes all the difference.

DebbieFiderer · 03/01/2020 16:21

Thanks! I did actually end up doing the I'll mile - once I'd started I didn't want to not finish it if that makes sense. Still only on 5,300 step though, even with that walk, which shows just how sedentary my job is 😭

Newyearnewarse · 03/01/2020 16:40

My Dh finished work early and because the weather was so lovely we dragged 13yr old ds out for a walk .
So another 3.5 miles done. It felt a hell of a lot longer thanks to all the mud and the cheery teen ! Glad we did it though .
Next week will be so much harder once I am back at work.

Does it count if I've walked a mile just doing my day to day routine? Feel like I should go out specifically to walk a mile otherwise I'm cheating?

forevercurious · 03/01/2020 16:51

A lovely sunny but cold day here! walked around 3.5 miles to town and back and then to the shop and back.

Egghead68 · 03/01/2020 16:54

Walked a couple of miles. Hoping to do a (very slow and hilly) parkrun tomorrow.

EastofEdna · 03/01/2020 17:12

I did my mile yesterday - a very brisk walk from the bus stop to Anfield, and then another mile to the car that was taking me home.

Need to crack on when I get home tonight and not wimp out after a couple of hours in the car.

Newyearnewarse · 03/01/2020 17:30

@donttellmetwice
I am doing the mile on top of my normal routine. So it is a specific outing I wouldn't normally do.

OP posts:
donttellmetwice · 03/01/2020 18:46

@Newyearnewarse I did it! I was going to pretend to myself that I'd already done it but then I caught myself and went and did it Grin I felt so good once I got home too, I need to remember that when I start convincing myself that I can skip a day.
