I have completed couch to 5k in the past
I have given up on running in the past
I have tried and failed in the past

But I have a plan for 2020

I am going to run/jog a mile a day for the year.

I know some days I will be knackered and fail but if I do I will do more the next day to make up for it.

Anyone like to join me ?

4 miles today (took public transport to work)

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 19:08

Since getting my dog 3 years ago I have walked every afternoon bar a handful for between 30 -50 mins. Covering 2-3 miles. In that time I’ve felt fitter, trimmer and in particular my legs have slimmed and toned lots. I used to run but never really enjoyed it but I love walking, normally briskly up some hills too. I find the improvement in my mood massive and I notice the seasons, talk to my neighbours and other dog owners. Would highly recommend.

Lovely idea for a thread OP.

My thighs are aching tonight. I did a mile day 1 and 2 and 1.5 today. I'm getting slower as my legs ache but my stamina seems to be getting a bit better.

Anyone else aching from running? It's surprised me as I walk loads, obviously using different muscles!

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 19:22

It will improve @circleorsquare, even with my daily walking, I still get an ache at the top of my thigh where it joins after a run.

Emmapeeler1 · 03/01/2020 20:13

Bad day - overslept so took DH’s car to the P&R to work. Horrendously busy and no walk Sad Too shattered to now. In pyjamas!

Going to some gardens tomorrow to make up for it.

KnightandDay · 03/01/2020 20:30

Yesterday 2.16km in 24 mins
Today 2.3km in 24.4mins
Need to pick up the pace a bit!

Londonborncatty · 03/01/2020 20:32

I would like to join please but will be walking not running if that’s okay.

KnightandDay · 03/01/2020 20:35

Was thinking it'd be all too easy to not get out this evening, as it's cold, wet and Friday night wine is calling, but thanks to this thread and my commitment to myself I made an effort - even if I could have done more.

KnightandDay · 03/01/2020 20:37

Londonborncatty I walk, definitely can't run! But im trying to get a little but faster every time.

donttellmetwice · 03/01/2020 20:52

Well done @KnightandDay. That's a bit how I felt today, I feel so much better knowing I did do it though! Keep it up Grin

Emmapeeler1 · 03/01/2020 21:25

I don’t run either London!

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 21:42

Remember, walking 1 mile and running 1 mile burns the same amount of caloriesSmile

ExpletiveDelighted · 03/01/2020 21:48

I haven't been out specifically to jog today, but have managed 8.5k steps and a short cycle ride (2 miles-ish, didn't log it). Back to jogging tomorrow.

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 21:49

I’ve just googled this and apparently it’s not quite true but if you compare a fast walk to a slow jog, there’s not much difference!

DebbieFiderer · 04/01/2020 09:11

If it makes you feel better, @knightandday, I am walking too, and have done 1.6km in 20 and 22 mins, so you're going faster than me!

girlofthenorth · 04/01/2020 09:57

lilgreen when you're walking on the flat with your dog how quickly would you say you're walking ? Reason I ask is because I am not a runner at all, and much prefer walking but I find it difficult when I'm walking my dog not to go into a slower walk ! Just trying to think of ways to keep my pace up and not entirely sure how quick I should be walking.

ExpletiveDelighted · 04/01/2020 10:20

1.45 miles in 27 mins for me, jogging. That's about 3.2mph, very slow for running but it does work me a bit harder than walking at that pace would do. Also, while I probably walk about that speed if I am going somewhere, I often find myself deep in thought and slowing to a snail's pace.

lilgreen · 04/01/2020 10:35

@girlofthenorth I am a fast walker naturally, as was my DM so spent my youth being pulled along. My dog used to pull as well so we walk quickly together and then when I reach the fields I let her off but I tend to march on and she follows bar the odd stop to sniff and do her business. Trying to estimate how fast, probably in time with a marching band lol and I get warm even in the cold weather.

lilgreen · 04/01/2020 10:36

I used to (last one was last year) jog 5k in 33 mins but don’t enjoy it.

Newyearnewarse · 04/01/2020 10:55

2 miles done this morning.
The combination of doing this alongside dry january is definitely helping me feel happier and healthier.

I really wouldn't get too hung up on how long the walk takes you . The main thing is you are getting out there and doing more than you were.
There will always be someone out there faster than you and you will always be faster or more able than someone else.
The main thing is to get out and move and enjoy it.

4.25km (just over 2.5 miles) done today delivering leaflets for a friend, so not done quickly, but because I had a purpose it didn't feel as far either. I am working a night shift tonight so will probably take tomorrow as a rest day, I've done enough over the last few days to still keep my average over a mile a day.

WeirdPookah · 04/01/2020 13:03

Just over 3 miles today, we walked along the prom into town for some Christmas money/voucher spending, and to replace my trainers!!

EastofEdna · 04/01/2020 13:40

1 mile done on the treadmill, to make up for missing yesterday and then will go out later for a plod around the block for today.
