Is anyone else “building” anything tonight?

That’s right in the “Peggy Martin” household we have had the annual tradition of building a toy ready for Christmas.
So far we’ve had a selection of colourful swear words, stomping about, sighing, grunting, all the tools spread out over the floor, a rousing chorus of “just go in the hole you little twat” and an unfortunate incident with a bare foot and a screw (might have sniggered at DH)

If anyone has the chad valley 6 v electric police bike I’d start building it now Xmas Grin

Our days of building kids’ toys are over I think (too old now) but we will be building a climbing frame for the cat Xmas Grin.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/12/2019 21:41

Nope, we bought a blaze scooter in the charity shop, brand new and already built. Win!!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 23/12/2019 21:44

Nope, DD is all about the LOL dolls this year, creepy little fuckers they may be, but they need no assembly 😁👍

legalseagull · 23/12/2019 21:48

We're over two hours in to building a bloody Ikea kitchen. Angry

ReginaGeorgeous · 23/12/2019 22:01

No assembly required here having learnt my lesson in previous years.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 23/12/2019 22:28

@thenewaveragebear1983 That is actual genius!

@legalseagull I remember that ikea kitchen from last year - think you could install an actual ikea kitchen faster!

Solidarity Mumsnetters! At least we didn’t start on Christmas Eve Xmas Smile

Glad that my teenagers are past this level! Still scarred from the ELC fort I built until 3am on Christmas Day when ds was 4.

And the playmobil pirate ship!!

TonOfLead · 23/12/2019 22:41

The DC are getting various bits of Playmobil. But I am not assembling it first. Because Playmobil boxes are easy to wrap.

legalseagull · 24/12/2019 06:36

Haha I think you're right. It took over three hours! Although we did give up and get a Chinese once we realised what we'd let ourself in for. It also takes up a sizeable chunk of the living room. They best bloody like it!!!!

I'm ignoring the two screws and three washers left over... Ikea must have put them in as spares right?!??!?

Bickles · 24/12/2019 06:50

Thankfully it’s all about Lego this year so building it is part of the fun.
Good luck though

Lolly34h · 24/12/2019 07:04

Wooden kitchen to be built once my dd whose almost 2 is asleep tonight x

HappyDinosaur · 24/12/2019 07:16

We've built the Ikea kitchen, maybe ours had more accurate holes or something as it only took a bit over an hour. Ikea can be a bit hit and miss for that, usually we are rubbish at diy anything! If we're ever not sure about screws or dowels etc we just use glue, it seems to do the trick. It is pretty big, we've hidden it in the study covered in a bed sheet. Think it's nicer than my kitchen!

Rockbird · 24/12/2019 07:47

I thought I didn't. Until I went to wrap the Design a Friend sleepover bed and realised the fucker was in bits. Tackling it tonight if the recipient ever goes to bloody sleep.

Hopefully this is the last year. Next year I'll get her an iPad Xmas Grin

Magpiefeather · 24/12/2019 07:49

We’ve got a kitchen to build tonight! Foolishly thought it might be quite straightforward.... you’ve got me worried now!

ipswichwitch · 24/12/2019 07:52

Not this year! I feel like I’ve won Christmas frankly 😂 the last two years have involved building playmobil on Christmas Eve, with much swearing and gin!

lifeisgoodagain · 24/12/2019 07:59

No toy building, a distant memory, more shouting at lazy young adults to get dressed in time for church (they are choristers) and trying to stop them being tipsy before the turkey is carved.

BadgertheBodger · 24/12/2019 08:04

There’s a playhouse waiting to be assembled this evening

That bastard Ikea kitchen nearly ended me last year, 11.30pm hissing at DH that it could get to fuck and I’d had enough before I (quietly) stropped off to bed and left him to it Grin

RhymingRabbit3 · 24/12/2019 08:06

We got out DDs scooter last night expecting to require assembly. Literally only had 2 pieces, slotted them together and done! Much easier than the wooden kitchen last year (although my mum and dad being there didnt help as much as they thought it did 😂)

Chemenger · 24/12/2019 08:06

This brought back memories of Snow White’s cottage, the Polly Pocket cruise ship and the lovely wooden dolls house with the broken staircase. I’m glad that’s all behind us.

Drbrowns · 24/12/2019 08:12

My dh, fil and my df are on stage 2 of a 13ft trampoline that has to Be carried ready made from my pil house to ours in the dark tonight once dc are in bed. I don’t know what Santa was thinking.

Sunshinegirl82 · 24/12/2019 08:25

Aldi kitchen built yesterday, discovery of an electric screwdriver I'd randomly picked up in ikea helped a lot although still took 2.5 hours! Little shop from Sainsbury's was a bit easier! Now hidden in the garage!

Just glad I'm not doing them tonight!

gemdrop84 · 24/12/2019 08:47

It took me and dh over 3 hours (and many drinks) to build dcs doll house, to be fair it was massive and I should never have bought the thing, but it was bargain Crown Grin This year will be the first year we won't have to construct anything, dc have asked for game consoles, so just plug in and charge. Will still end up having a good drink though Xmas Grin Best of luck to everyone on your builds.

RockyisMYRhino · 24/12/2019 08:47

Another kitchen to be built here tonight once the 2yo is asleep. Am hoping it doesn't lead to near divorce like last years toy box!!!

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 24/12/2019 08:50

This makes me remember two years ago when, on the advice of MN, I made dh assemble the Ghostbusters playmobil on Christmas Eve. Bastard thing took HOURS. Thankfully nothing to put together this year. Though I’ve just remembered I’ve got stabilisers coming for ds’s bike today. That can wait right??

Funnyface1 · 24/12/2019 08:58

Built dd's wooden shop a couple of days ago cos we've had this too many times on Christmas Eve.
