Is anyone else “building” anything tonight?

That’s right in the “Peggy Martin” household we have had the annual tradition of building a toy ready for Christmas.
So far we’ve had a selection of colourful swear words, stomping about, sighing, grunting, all the tools spread out over the floor, a rousing chorus of “just go in the hole you little twat” and an unfortunate incident with a bare foot and a screw (might have sniggered at DH)

If anyone has the chad valley 6 v electric police bike I’d start building it now Xmas Grin

This is the first year in 18 years that we dont have to put anything together. So happy.

This is the first year I'm as finished as I can be. One present left to wrap, it's still hidden in the garage. A full size table football, built last night. Just need to wrap it and make Santa's footprints out of flour, drop a bell and I'm done. Waiting for DS to fall asleep before I start. Feeling smug for the first year!! Grin

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 24/12/2019 20:02

Waiting for DS to sleep here too and then get all the pressies out of the hidey hole, down the stairs, negotiating the baby gate. DH is already snoozing on the sofa Hmm

Will be doing the playmobil house just as soon as Dd stops bloody coughing and goes to sleep (so never...)

UptightFunk · 24/12/2019 20:10

My husband has a whole mid sleeper bed with a chest of drawers and shelves and a desk to put together.

He hasn't started, hasn't checked the parts.

I've been telling him for weeks to start building it at work to bring home bits in the van. He says tonight is loads of time.

We have a young baby too so I ain't helping.

Let's see how it goes.... Grin

I am so glad I got the IKEA kitchen secondhand for the DC's. Although it was bloody heavy to lug in from the garage where i had hidden it.

First ever Playmobil I got for the DC - I promised DC1 I would build it Christmas night so she could play with it first thing on Boxing Day. Took hours.

These days I am a Playmobil ninja and can assemble them in record time.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/12/2019 20:44

And then there all of the bloody stickers!
I'm past that stage, but I found wine helped....
Merry Christmas! Xmas Smile

My dh, fil and my df are on stage 2 of a 13ft trampoline that has to Be carried ready made from my pil house to ours in the dark tonight once dc are in bed. I don’t know what Santa was thinking

This is my favourite contribution to this thread.

DS2 got the Playmobil police station a couple of years ago. I spent three evenings in the lead up to Christmas putting it together.

This year they have three HUGE Lego sets (one each and one to share). That will be DH and I busy tomorrow whilst the DC merrily play with the included minifigs. But we're looking forward to it. We like Lego.

Bought the IKEA Kitchen for DS2s birthday tears ago. Don't remember fighting with it much but I am an IKEA flatpack ninja.

moolady1977 · 24/12/2019 20:47

We won't be seeing our dgc tomorrow so tonight they had presents a drum kit and a pram to build took about 10 minutes but faces said everything, best Christmas yet with dgc

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 24/12/2019 20:48

I once stayed up very late to finish knitting and sewing together clothes for tiny tears doll.

Winterfellismyhome · 24/12/2019 22:44

Just finished building DS' play kitchen. Took a bit longer because i "hacked" it Grin

moodolph · 24/12/2019 22:52

Dh os building Dd playhouse. Dd is up and won't go to bed. Tea has not been started. Eeeeeeee. Plus he has just come in and said he has four bolts spare, and five plugs. Oh dear

Littleroundone · 24/12/2019 23:03

Not this year, learnt our lesson a few years ago with a bastard kitchen that took until 3am on Xmas morn to build then the kids barely played with it! This year they've got bikes and paid the fiver each for the shop to assemble , well worth it!!

PatheticParrot · 24/12/2019 23:03

So far I've built a Bumblebee pedal car and arranged the inside of a doll's house. DH is still on step 4 of building a toy kitchen. Will be lucky if he's finiahed by morning at this rate!! Xxxxx

Rosegardensandgin · 24/12/2019 23:06

Not building as such but setting up an x box as apparently it's a pain to do on Xmas day as everyone else is doing it too
Can't figure the bloody thing out 🤦‍♀️

Nat6999 · 24/12/2019 23:10

I still have nightmares over the 8 hours trying to assemble an executive residence for a hamster, abandoned by two adults for the 8 year old to come down next morning & finish in 5 minutes.

FlatheadScrewdriver · 24/12/2019 23:12

There were "only four screws" for "easy self assembly" in the wooden planter I bought for my mum... I expect my palms will one day recover, my electric screwdriver gave up halfway through... Then we did the stealth delivery so it will be outside my DM's window when she opens her curtains in the morning (but DD's clod-hopping "quiet footsteps" were hilarious so I imagine my DM has spotted it by now Grin)

sazzle27 · 24/12/2019 23:14

Lego helicarrier.... hes a bit young for such a big piece to build.. and quite frankly many hours later and not even half way through, i feel too young for it!)

However he does have a birthday in February so currently debating saving it for that and giving myself an extra month and a half....

mamaduckbone · 24/12/2019 23:14

Our most memorably sweary Christmas Eve involved extracting a table football table from the cellar and trying to attach its legs. Bloody hell I sometimes miss the magic of small children at Christmas but that very special brand of hell that is building toys very, very quietly on Christmas Eve...that I don't miss!

BrokenWing · 24/12/2019 23:26

We are also past the stage of building, but remember the Xmas where ds got a big playmobil Knights castle, he wouldn't settle in bed so we couldn't start until late, then we were up to 2:30am building the bloody thing.

Ds was wide awake announcing santa had been at 5:30am!!

StubbleTurnips · 24/12/2019 23:34

Xmas 2015 is etched on my memory from trying to build a little tykes car. 3 people with brute strength and 2 hours. DH redrilled holes in that mofo.

Siablue · 24/12/2019 23:34

A cosy cope car. Opened the box. It requires a electric drill!

Fatted · 24/12/2019 23:35

Nope, I'm not falling for that shit again after spending three days last Christmas building various playmobil sets.

Magpiefeather · 25/12/2019 15:02

Well, the bloody kitchen was a nightmare to build. We swore, we argued, DH fumed through the whole thing. Have to say it was a bit shoddy for something that cost nearly £70. Lots of the holes didn’t quite line up, the door’s a bit wonky and one of the hinges (one of the only things they’d bloody screwed on for you) was the wrong way up so wouldn’t fit for love nor money. So once we’d figured that out we had to take the hinges off and swap them round.

BUT

It looks lovely. DD adores it and straight away got cooking. It’s had hours of use already and I can see she is going to get a lot of joy out of it. I was going to complain to the shop but now I probably won’t, the anger has worn off!

Merry christmas all.
I hope your DC liked the things you lovingly (or begrudgingly) built for them!
