Tumble dryer or dishwasher

xmxaxs · 22/12/2019 08:09

I only have space for one.

We do one large load a day.
Drying clothes in winter is a nightmare. Summer is not a problem.

Wash up 2-3 times a day. I hate washing up.

Tumble dryer will only be used when washing doesn't dry outside but will be really useful in the cold/ damp months.

Dishwasher will be useful all year round but washing up can be done without one.

Which one would you prefer?

Dishwasher. No question about it.

backouch · 22/12/2019 08:10

Dryer. I don't have a dishwasher any more and it's fine, quicker in fact than faffing with a dishwasher but to have no clothes dryer...? Not a chance!

gonewiththerain · 22/12/2019 08:10

Dishwasher
If you’ve got room elsewhere eg under stairs cupboard you could have a condensing dryer

happytoday73 · 22/12/2019 08:11

I use my dryer far more than my dishwasher so I'd pick the dryer

RhymingRabbit3 · 22/12/2019 08:12

Dishwasher because I hate washing up.
Dehumidifier to help dry clothes faster indoors.

backouch · 22/12/2019 08:12

We no longer need to buy dishwasher salt, tablets or rinse either, and don't get that awful film on glasses!

Adesignforstrife · 22/12/2019 08:12

We've had a dishwasher for about 15 years and a tumble dryer for only 2. Now we have the dryer I do appreciate it (esp on rainy days) but I'd sooner ditch that than the dishwasher.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 22/12/2019 08:12

Dishwasher. Get yourself a dehumidifier you can stick in a cupboard in the spring/summer/autumn to help dry winter washing.

BlueLadybird · 22/12/2019 08:13

I would go for a tumble dryer. Having wet clothes all over the house for days is a pet hate whereas once you wash up it’s done.

Some people have success with a DryBuddy instead of a tumble dryer though (I’ve never tried it) so might be worth considering.

TokenGinger · 22/12/2019 08:13

Dryer. I have neither and I have never thought, I wish I had a dishwasher, but I always think I wish I had a dryer. We cane back off holiday last week and I still have holiday clothes to wash on top of our normal daily washing because I can't get the clothes dry quickly enough to get through it all.

isabellerossignol · 22/12/2019 08:14

Tumble dryer. Drying clothes indoors is a nightmare for causing condensation etc, so it's of long term benefit in terms of maintaining the condition of your house.

sanityisamyth · 22/12/2019 08:14

Dishwasher and a washer/dryer. You get everything then!

dalmatianmad · 22/12/2019 08:14

Tumble dryer! How do people cope without one in this weather?
I've not had a dishwasher for years Xmas Confused

InDubiousBattle · 22/12/2019 08:14

Tumble dryer every time.

Santasy · 22/12/2019 08:14

Dishwasher.

I lived without both for years and my dw is the hardest working machine in the house. I still don't have a dryer.

What about a heated drying rack? I don't have one but have read on here that they are good.

Chocolateandcarbs · 22/12/2019 08:15

Dishwasher and then when the washing machine reaches the end of its life buy a washer dryer.

Bythebeach · 22/12/2019 08:16

God I couldn’t live without either - swap washing machine for washer-dryer and get dosher washer?
Failing that, I’d get dishwasher and for drying, heated airer plus dehumidifier?

Bythebeach · 22/12/2019 08:16

Dosher = dish😂

MustardScreams · 22/12/2019 08:17

Tumble dryer every time. I have a dryer and no dishwasher and it’s fine. Washing takes 2 minutes after eating, getting wet clothes dry takes days in the winter.

Henlie · 22/12/2019 08:17

Dishwasher(!)

Isitme13 · 22/12/2019 08:18

I’d go for dishwasher, but really consider other options for drying clothes.

Is there really no space anywhere? What do you do currently to dry clothes over winter? Would a heated airer work at all (I’m assuming you maybe put a clothes horse up as it is, so a heated one could go in its place). Or is there a wall anywhere where you could install a wall hung heated airer?

I have and use both machines daily, but I would hate most to be without my dishwasher.

LittleCandle · 22/12/2019 08:18

Dishwasher! We have a heated airer that also gives off nice gentle heat for days when it is cold, but not really cold enough to justify putting on the heating. I had a dryer once, and would not bother again.

Thisismyusernamefornow · 22/12/2019 08:18

Dryer. I have dishwasher and would happily swap but it's a slim one so no chance

TheLidoOfThighs · 22/12/2019 08:21

Another vote for dishwasher and a dehumidifier. As a bonus the desiccant ones give off some heat. This Website explains the different types well www.meaco.com/dehumidifier/home-dehumidifiers

CoffeeBeansGalore · 22/12/2019 08:22

Do you have a shed or garage where you could put a tumble dryer? Then you could have both! I have a tumble dryer in the garage (no worrying about condensation causing damp in the house), no longer have a dishwasher as moved house, but I do miss it. I have a heated airer which is brilliant but the tumble dryer is better for bedding & towels, especially in winter.
