Tumble dryer or dishwasher

xmxaxs · 22/12/2019 08:09

I only have space for one.

We do one large load a day.
Drying clothes in winter is a nightmare. Summer is not a problem.

Wash up 2-3 times a day. I hate washing up.

Tumble dryer will only be used when washing doesn't dry outside but will be really useful in the cold/ damp months.

Dishwasher will be useful all year round but washing up can be done without one.

Which one would you prefer?

Dishwasher. I was going to have a dryer in the airing cupboard but I have a launderette two seconds from mine and take stuff in there just to dry - huge industrial dryers, love them and dirt cheap! I also have a foldaway drying rack which works a treat and is great for drying anything flat.

Herja · 22/12/2019 09:35

One of these above the stairs with a dehumidifier and a dishwasher!

I can dry a full (9kg) load over night if it's put up early, and light fabrics are dry in 3 or 4 hours.

I'm surprised at a few mentions of combined washer driers.
Maybe they've hugely improved since I had one (when living on my own) but it would have been useless for a family with a lot of washing. Drying took forever and it only dried half the washing load.

Even though you don't need it all year round your house will benefit more from a drier if you really can't find a place for both. My condenser drier isn't in the kitchen.

Floralnomad · 22/12/2019 09:42

Dryer , I use mine all year round I would also hate to be without my dishwasher but if I had to choose the dryer would win . Are you sure there is nowhere else in the house you could put a dryer as they don’t need anything other than a socket if you go for a heat pump or condenser type .

www.sciencealert.com/is-it-better-to-wash-dishes-by-hand-or-dishwasher-environment-science This countries drier than you think, there’s a desert in Kent, the eastern seaboard is as dry as Israel. We really need to conserve energy & water. If I wash up by hand I’m using a fossil fuel, if I put the dw on I’m using renewable energy.

All household items are luxury items in the sense that we’d survive without them, but they got invented for a reason.

Just don’t buy an Electrolux one, the builders put one in this house so I sold my Bosch one. It was rubbish and I bought a Miele to replace it that was worth every penny, I can fit my oven racks in it & the bbq grill. I have to keep mil away from cups though or she washes them by hand which uses more water than a whole dw cycle.

Mammyloveswine · 22/12/2019 10:19

I couldn't survive without my dryer!

stripeypillowcase · 22/12/2019 10:21

dishwasher. hands down.
but I have a washing line in the attic, so no problems getting laundry dry.

Jeansforme · 22/12/2019 10:23

Dryer. Couldn’t live without it. Use it all year round

stripeypillowcase · 22/12/2019 10:24

yes to energy/water consumption.
my dw uses 7l water on the eco cycle, which is equivalent to one sink full of water. try do the washing up and getting it properly clean on that little water.

mrssoap · 22/12/2019 10:25

Dryer. I've had a dishwasher in the past, was nice but to be honest I didn't find it a massive luxury. The tumble dryer however I could not do without.

JellyBellies · 22/12/2019 10:26

A dishwasher and washer/dryer. That what we have with space for only 2. Why wouldn't you?
You don't need to choose!

Sooverthemill · 22/12/2019 10:26

Tumble dryer. We don't use our dishwasher any more but I'm sorry to say use tumble dryer every wash ( except in height of summer)

Spied · 22/12/2019 10:27

Dryer. Couldn't manage without one.
Had dishwashers in the past. By the time it's loaded properly, unloaded and also cleaned then you could have washed, dried and tidied away manually. Plus I think they can make crockery smell.

NannySusan · 22/12/2019 10:27

Dishwasher and a heated clothes horse. Best of both worlds.

bubblesforlife · 22/12/2019 10:29

Dishwasher! Such a god send!
I actually don’t like to put my clothes into a clothes dryer as I find some shrink!

melissasummerfield · 22/12/2019 10:30

I could never make this choice, Id rather rip out the kitchen to make room for both Wink

AndAnotherNameChanger · 22/12/2019 10:34

Another vote for dishwasher + dehumidifier.

I'd actually take a dehumidifier over a tumble dryer any day, not only are they kinder to your clothes and you can use them with all the items which are too delicate for a tumble dryer, they also deal with any humidity problems from any other sources.

swampytiggaa · 22/12/2019 10:38

Tumble dryer. Wouldn’t be without one. I line dry as much as possible but use the dryer as much as I need to.

GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 22/12/2019 10:39

Another vote for a tumble dryer.

My dishwasher broke last year and I now just use it to store things in.

Yes washing up is a pain in the arse but only takes a few minutes, even if I let it pile up whereas drying clothes would be a bloody nightmare.

Yes you might only use it half the year but if it is pissing it down for a week in the summer and the heating isn't on then thank the gods for a tumble dryer!!

TheLidoOfThighs · 22/12/2019 10:40

Yes, me too, AndAnotherNameChanger, and I’d never have thought that before having one.

BrokenWing · 22/12/2019 10:42

Dishwasher. There are other options for drying clothes elsewhere in the house. A condenser drier can be plugged in anywhere. Dehumidifiers, heated drying rails etc.

concooktion · 22/12/2019 11:13

Definitely tumbler.

Thesuzle · 22/12/2019 11:16

Dishwasher in the house,
Tumbles dryer as they are a bit dodgy out in the garage (not attached to the house)
And as littlecandle says heated air dryer thingy

christma5 · 22/12/2019 11:30

I use my dishwasher once a day, could easily use the dryer 3 times. I'd be looking to put a dryer elsewhere.

Cooper88 · 22/12/2019 11:33

When my washing machine broke I got a washer/dryer and got rind of the tumble dryer so got a dishwasher. In the summer I didn't even use the dry function it's only now that I can't dry clothes easily without it I use the dry function.
