Tumble dryer or dishwasher

xmxaxs · 22/12/2019 08:09

I only have space for one.

We do one large load a day.
Drying clothes in winter is a nightmare. Summer is not a problem.

Wash up 2-3 times a day. I hate washing up.

Tumble dryer will only be used when washing doesn't dry outside but will be really useful in the cold/ damp months.

Dishwasher will be useful all year round but washing up can be done without one.

Which one would you prefer?

I use my tumble dryer all year, every day. There's no way I'm ever going to peg out socks and underwear etc, even in summer! You'll use it way more than you think.

Dryer 100%

Dishwasher, No competition.

Celebelly · 22/12/2019 12:30

Dishwasher. Washing up is the pits. We have both but if I had to choose one it would be the dishwasher.

WiltedPlant · 22/12/2019 12:30

Dishwasher, with dehumidifier.

Saying that, I have a washer-dryer, but only use the dryer for towels, bedding etc. Everything else goes on an airer in the box room with the dehumidifier running. Clothes are dry in a few hours and there is less damage to them than if they were tumble dried.

I've had a washer dryer for around 30 years. Definitely would not want to be without it. It was worth its weight in gold when the dcs were little, not just for clothes but for the times when illness meant several changes of bedsheets during the night - my dcs only ever seen to get d&v during the winter months when it was impossible to get them dry outside. Due to space issues, I've never had a dishwasher but that would be my luxury item - we are hoping to redo our kitchen in the next couple of years and I am seriously thinking about losing one cupboard in order to accommodate a dishwasher.

Travelmumone · 22/12/2019 12:52

Dryer!! Hands down!!!!

RandomUsernameHere · 22/12/2019 13:30

If there was really no option to have both, I would choose dishwasher as I only use my tumble dryer from around November to February whereas dishwasher is used all year round.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 22/12/2019 13:31

Dishwasher.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 22/12/2019 13:35

I very rarely use my tumbledrier, the dishwasher is used every day.

NubianVeganQueen · 22/12/2019 13:37

Tumble dryer 100%

Stockmarketup · 22/12/2019 16:21

Tumble dryer. Who wants damp washing hanging around the house for days on end? How on earth do you dry towels and bedding in winter otherwise? Couldn’t live without one.

Dishwasher, meh, I can take it or leave it. Sometimes I can’t be bothered to use it. It’s quicker to wash up.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 22/12/2019 16:33

My washer has a 1600rpm spin cycle. Washing comes out just damp. It dries in a few hours.

averythinline · 22/12/2019 16:37

dishwasher absolutely - day in day out use.....i hate washing up ...I love my dishawasher ...get a heated airer or dehumidifier (meaco -low energy one brilliant and massively speads up drying clothes ...

averythinline · 22/12/2019 16:38

i spin my wash twice at 1600 - shirts straight on hanger everything else in the house is jersey as hate ironing as well... dehumidifer brillant dry over night ..

MitziK · 22/12/2019 16:41

Dishwasher. It makes doing everything else (including, if possible, taking wet laundry to the laundrette to dry it) so much easier, as one of the main jobs of the day is sorted and you never have countertops covered with dirty crockery where DP is too fucking lazy to wash up as he goes along and then puts off washing up after cooking as well.

MikeUniformMike · 22/12/2019 16:46

Dishwasher.
Clothes dry outside from Feb - October.
Don't bother with a washer dryer.

lisag1969 · 22/12/2019 16:54

Definitely dishwasher. Maybe you could get a small dryer in a cupboard. X

BertieBotts · 22/12/2019 16:56

DISHWASHER!!

Get a Minky Tower Airer from Argos or the similar one from Ikea. You don't need a heated one. You just need one which is this shape as it allows airflow to the clothes and lets them actually dry without being musty. If you get the one which can fold down to half the footprint size it's even better.

The only thing a tumble drier is good for is making your clothes smell nice, and last minute stuff you need washed and dry faster than a radiator can do it. They are a fire hazard, they cost loads of money to run and they're bad for the environment, so you can even feel smug at not having one :o

PorpentinaScamander · 22/12/2019 16:57

Tumble dryer. It's so nice not having every spare inch of space taken over by damp washing which takes forever to dry.

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 22/12/2019 17:20

That's a difficult one as i hate washing up by hand but we have to use a tumble dryer because of DS lung issues.

Crystal87 · 22/12/2019 17:22

To me a dishwasher is an luxury, a tumble dryer is as essential as the washing machine, but then there are 6 of us.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/12/2019 17:28

But if new technology was always treated as a luxury the wheel would never have caught on would it?.

AveEldon · 22/12/2019 17:29

dishwasher
