Tumble dryer or dishwasher

xmxaxs · 22/12/2019 08:09

I only have space for one.

We do one large load a day.
Drying clothes in winter is a nightmare. Summer is not a problem.

Wash up 2-3 times a day. I hate washing up.

Tumble dryer will only be used when washing doesn't dry outside but will be really useful in the cold/ damp months.

Dishwasher will be useful all year round but washing up can be done without one.

Which one would you prefer?

Once you’ve seen the amount of water a dehumidifier pulls out of a load of washing, you’ll think twice about a heated airer, which is just pushing that water out into your house!

XmasRibbons · 22/12/2019 08:23

Tumble dryer, i say that as someone who has longed for a dishwasher for years, but I've no space for one in my kitchen.

I absolutely hate drying clothes round the house, I find they're always stiff and scratchy and the colour seems to fade quicker (might just be me?)

Do you have room anywhere you can keep a tumble dryer? A condenser one in the bottom of a spare closet or something, they're lifesavers!

DancingDelli · 22/12/2019 08:24

Dishwasher 100%

Get a heated clothes horse.

squiglet111 · 22/12/2019 08:28

Most definitely the tumble dryer. I have had one for about a year and can still remember what life was like without it! Clothes never dried, constantly rotating clothes on clothes horse, running out of space to hang wet clothes....I spent my whole maternity leave constantly washing and attempting to dry. Kick myself that we didn't get one at beginning of mat leave! Never going back!

Lived without a dishwasher when ours was broken and it was alright. Wash and dry...no need to load, wash, then unload.... Saved a step which made it easier in some ways.

Tumble dryer

BarbaraofSeville · 22/12/2019 08:31

Dishwasher without a doubt.

Consider alternative solutions to the clothes drying issue such as heated airer, condenser dryer in a cupboard, on landing or wherever, but don't get the Indesit one, it's shit.

We dry outside when possible and then use a normal airer most of the time, as I hate tumble dryers (shrink clothes, crease clothes, expensive to run, hopeless for duvet covers as it all bundles up and is wet in the middle while boiling on the outside) and don't have any damp issues. Just dry in a heated room with the window on vent.

SarahBeeney · 22/12/2019 08:33

Such split opinions!!

Personally I couldn’t manage without my tumble drier, especially for bedding, towels and underwear.
If I get behind on the laundry I love that I can do 5 loads and get them washed and dried in one day.
Ours is in the cupboard under the stairs.

Obviously I love my dishwasher,I hate emptying it though.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/12/2019 08:34

If you are washing a large load a day then I’m assuming you have children. When they are old enough then the washing up can be their job, or at least shared.
Is there anywhere else you could put a condenser dryer? Under the stairs? In the bathroom? In a bedroom?

HalfBrick · 22/12/2019 08:37

Tumble drier. Can't imagine drying clothes/bedding indoors anymore. Stuff just doesn't dry outside in winter where we are, it's perma-damp!
Use less dishes when cooking so less washing up.

seething1234 · 22/12/2019 08:38

Tumble dryer.... drying clothes inside is really bad for your health.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 22/12/2019 08:41

Tumble dryer all day long! The thought of a house full of damp washing all winter is enough to swing it. Dishwasher does get used every 1 - 2 days but I’d rather do washing up than be surrounded by damp clothes. Especially when there’s a sickness bug or something!

AppleKatie · 22/12/2019 08:41

Dishwasher and a tumble drier somewhere that isn’t the kitchen. I’d have it in my bedroom if necessary 😂

Or lose a cupboard? There will be a way around this somehow!

Both my dishwasher and tumbler dryer have broken. I haven't been able to afford to fix or replace.

It's the dishwasher I miss the most. I'm sick of having dirty crockery and then clean crockery around. I work full time (and having a pretty shitty time as a single parent atm) so just can't fit it in. Is love to shove it and hide it in the dishwasher.
Not having a tumble dryer has been fine until winter. I have a heated dryer and a humidifier (not a plug in one-time with the calcium carbonate in to absorb the water). It's a pain but it's a short lived issue.

I'm hoping to either fix or replace the dishwasher after Xmas. Anyone know roughly a call out charge? I've tried searching the error code but the bloody code keeps changing if you leave the machine on.

Redcrayons · 22/12/2019 08:43

Tumble dryer.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/12/2019 08:45

Stack them, put the dryer on top of the dw because dryers are very light. You can buy stacking kits online or just stick a bit of ply inbetween if funds are tight over Christmas.

They are both essential to an easier life imo.

Corneliusmurphy · 22/12/2019 09:00

Tumble dryer. We have both but when the dishwasher broke I just washed up at the sink til we got it repaired, when the tumble dryer broke we replaced it immediately. I use airers too but there are five of us here; that’s a lot of wet washing!

Instagrump · 22/12/2019 09:03

Dryer. I have a teen for washing dishes. And if she's out it's just a few minutes of my time. Washing dishes also doesn't contribute to damp caused by radiator drying condensation. My last house got mouldy despite me opening windows to air it.

Unless you have a decent shed? Then a tumble dryer could go in there and a dishwasher in the kitchen.

xmxaxs · 22/12/2019 09:14

Thanks everyone. We're currently drying clothes on a clothes horse by the radiator but have noticed mould appearing around the walls nearby. Ideally I would like to stop drying clothes in the house and just use the line or a dryer.

I'm thinking that the tumble dryer is more beneficial for the whole family and the dishwasher is probably just a luxury.

The only reason I'm debating it is the tumble dryer is only needed for 5/6 months.

Dryer. Drying clothes indoors without proper ventilation is bad for your health... and it makes washing bedding and towels etc a doddle. I could live without my dishwasher

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/12/2019 09:19

Dryer. But we live in the rainy North.

We had neither, for ten years, got both a year ago and the dryer has massively improved our lives. The dishwasher hasn't.

glitterboom · 22/12/2019 09:20

We have a dishwasher and have just ordered a tumble dryer that is being delivered tomorrow! I am so sick of our "dining" room being full of drying clothes all the time! So looking forward to having a whole room back where we can eat again and use as the kids playroom.

If I had to have 1 it would be the dishwasher as we put it on twice a day normally. We've had it a few years and we STILL say to each other often "can you imagine if we had to wash the dishes??" So time consuming having to wash dishes throughout the day. After dinner our kitchen looks like a bomb has hit it so to be able to put the dishes in the dishwasher is so satisfying and relatively quick and easy to have a tidy, clean kitchen again.

Like a PP said, I would be putting the tumble dryer anywhere I could to make sure I had one - even in my bedroom.

Sorry, I'm no help- get both!

misspiggy19 · 22/12/2019 09:21

Tumble dryer without a doubt.

Cornettoninja · 22/12/2019 09:22

Is there no where else in the house you could place a tumble dryer? Growing up ours was in my parents bedroom; whilst not the most attractive it made a lot of sense for putting clothes away.
