Tumble dryer or dishwasher

xmxaxs · 22/12/2019 08:09

I only have space for one.

We do one large load a day.
Drying clothes in winter is a nightmare. Summer is not a problem.

Wash up 2-3 times a day. I hate washing up.

Tumble dryer will only be used when washing doesn't dry outside but will be really useful in the cold/ damp months.

Dishwasher will be useful all year round but washing up can be done without one.

Which one would you prefer?

Dishwasher. Full size one (slimline one we had was useless). We have a tumble drier too but we don’t need to use it a lot of the year. I don’t dry most clothes in it as it does cause shrinkage even if the instructions say it’s ok. It’s good for sheets, towels, socks and undies though. Very handy if you have a vomiting child in the house.

But on balance if I had to give up one it would be the tumble drier no contest. I won’t go self-catering without a dishwasher now.

We wash up and put clothes on radiators in winter (which dry very quickly) so rarely use either our dishwasher or tumble dryer. If I had to choose, tumble dryer for those wet days in summer.

Thescrewinthetuna · 22/12/2019 17:43

I had the same problem recently and went for a dryer. I miss having a dishwasher (our dryer and dishwasher both died then we moved somewhere with only enough space for a dryer or dishwasher) but the dryer has been life changing with the shit weather. I still hate doing the washing up but I hate it marginally less than trying to dry 4 peoples clothes all over the house and the associated damp

Booberella9 · 22/12/2019 17:50

Dishwasher.

Space for both though? Stack dryer on top.

Or get a washer/dryer

newbingepisodes · 22/12/2019 17:53

Dishwasher in the house. You can have a dryer in garage, shed, spare bedroom, under the stairs etc if you need one. Or you could buy a washer-dryer in one (although they are a bit crap compared to separate washer and dryer).

Spacecudet · 23/12/2019 08:26

I have dishwasher and washer dryer. Need both.

OceanSunFish · 23/12/2019 08:27

Dishwasher

Orangesox · 23/12/2019 08:34

Dishwasher in kitchen, condensing tumble dryer elsewhere in the house if you can afford to do so in terms of space and finances.

Both have their merits, but if I was really pushed to get rid of one it would be the dryer. You can’t dry everything in a tumble dryer else you’ll ruin your clothes, and we managed for many many years with a heated Airer that had a sheet thrown over it without our flat at the time looking like a laundrette. Now we only tumble underwear, socks and bedding really, everything else still goes on an Airer.

Having no dishwasher though, nearly destroyed our marriage - there’s nothing worse than getting home from a night shift on a busy surgical ward to find no clean spoons, bowls or in-fact anything so you can eat quickly before you try to sleep for your next shift because DH repeatedly elected to “do it tomorrow” Angry.

Tumble dryer every time. I don't use it at all for 6 months of the year but couldn't be without it in the winter.

The dishwasher is a 'nice to have' for me but could live without it.

So, OP, has this oh-so-conclusive thread helped you make your decision.😂😂

HeyMac · 23/12/2019 13:37

Dishwasher

But heated airer

BarbaraofSeville · 23/12/2019 13:38

I think you personally have to decide what you hate the most. Washing up, or having washing hung around on airers.

Might also depend on how much washing up you produce - our DW is on full about 5 times a week and there's no way on earth that I'm doing that amount of washing up.

Or how much laundry you have. If you're one of the 'multiple sets of clothes per day, wash absolutely everything after each wear, towels after each use and change the sheets weekly or more often' you're going to have a lot more washing to deal with than if you wear things more than once etc.

backouch · 23/12/2019 15:49

Could you maybe rent one for 6 months then if you won't need it long?

SimonJT · 23/12/2019 15:54

Dishwasher it gets used everyday.

Never had a tumble dryer, don’t feel the need for one. Clothes get hung out just before bed and they’re dry and ready to put away in the morning.

FlyingPenguine · 23/12/2019 16:10

Dishwasher for sure. Buy a dehumidifier, Meaco are best, it will dry laundry better than a tumble dryer and much more energy efficient.

RoseMartha · 23/12/2019 16:11

Dishwasher

gumpforestgump · 23/12/2019 16:27

Can you get a table top dishwasher? Much smaller.

Washer drier all in one?

Personally I wouldn’t give up the drier.

CrowleysBentley · 23/12/2019 17:33

I'd say tumble dryer, but I've had to put a condenser dryer in the corner of the hallway outside my bedroom, it gets used a lot. Before that we had nowhere to dry clothes in our little flat, plus no outside space and tiny bathroom has no window. Drying stuff on hangers everywhere was awful, plus storage heaters so no radiators to dry on either. There's no space for a dishwasher in the kitchen either, mind you.
