Do you buy new clothes for Christmas day?

Argh. I've spent so much.

But I feel like the kids should have new clothes for Christmas day.

That's a thing, right?

Not in my house!

yasle · 15/12/2019 18:54

No it is not a thing, I have never heard of it.

My kids like to wear PJs or onesies on Christmas day.

Unless your kids need new clothes, it just seems like an added hassle and waste.

No!

We did when I was little as we didn’t get many new clothes but now I feel like it’s overkill.

BlackWhitePurple · 15/12/2019 18:55

Eh? I've never heard of this! I couldn't be bothered buying new stuff and keeping it till Christmas- if i get a new jumper I want to wear it right away!

NobJobWinker · 15/12/2019 18:56

Never bought new clothes for myself or DC specifically to wear on Xmas day

StarlingsInSummer · 15/12/2019 18:56

I do usually get DS a new top as one of his Christmas present, which he’ll wear on Christmas Day. And actually I have a new skirt to wear too.

bananallamas · 15/12/2019 18:57

As kids we would often wear something we had been given on Xmas day. But that wasn't the point of it - ie my parents never set out to buy us new outfits for Xmas day. It's a waste unless they need clothes.

Vercingetorixraktavija · 15/12/2019 18:57

No, why? They just get up, run down the stairs in pj, and spent most of the day in it.

TreeChanger · 15/12/2019 18:58

Maybe it's because they don't have 'goi g out' clothes so I feel like they should wear something nicer than their trackies and tshirts at the dinner table?

No.

When my girls were little I used to get them a new set of pyjamas for Christmas Eve/morning.

MrsGrindah · 15/12/2019 19:00

Yes it was a thing in my family ( 70s/80s ). I have already bought my Xmas dresses! Couldn’t bear the thought of spending the day in PJs but each to their own.

Ninkanink · 15/12/2019 19:00

If they don’t have loads of ‘going out clothes’ then I think it’s quite nice for them to have a lovely new outfit for Christmas Day.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/12/2019 19:00

How does this work exactly? New clothes that they wear once or twice and then bin in time for next Christmas? Or new clothes because they actually needs them and will wear them regularly?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/12/2019 19:01

Need, not needs. I'm not a pirate.

TreeChanger · 15/12/2019 19:02

I always had new Xmas day clothes as a kid. Everything from a dress to socks.

I don't think I'll bother. We're not going out and they have new pj's. They can stay in them

We dress up for Christmas dinner but that doesn't mean new clothes. My son will probably wear a shirt with nice jeans and my daughter a pretty sweater or dress with leggings.

mummmy2017 · 15/12/2019 19:05

We used to get leggings and t-shirts.
Easy wear, cheap, but nice as new and under £10 each.

Justabadwife · 15/12/2019 19:07

Dd always gets something new to wear on xmas day.
This year it's a nice pink top, a black denim skirt and tights. They will all be things worn all year, she loves skirts and nice tops.

wishfull888 · 15/12/2019 19:08

Yes. Mum always did it and I do it now for my kids. Often wear the same thing New Year's Day as it's smart. So Shoot me ! Smile

Parker231 · 15/12/2019 19:12

We start in PJ’s - eventually change into jeans and sweatshirt and early evening back into PJ’s. We’ve 16 (all adults) for Christmas lunch - all staying for the week. We don’t go out of the house on Christmas Day (dog has a walk around the garden) so very casual.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/12/2019 19:23

When they were little, yes.

Now they'd rather I didn't choose stuff for them. We might pick something up before the day, knowing they could/should wear something nicer on Christmas day than the usual jeans and top (or PJs in DD2's case!) but sometimes they don't want anything and then just recycle something.

FloridaNewbie · 15/12/2019 19:25

No but I have a friend that likes to get a new outfit for Christmas day.

I wouldn't choose to wear PJs all day as I'd feel a bit sweaty after a while. And I can't really be bothered to dress up, plus I find smart clothes usually make me cold. So I tend to wear my normal saturday "mom" uniform of casual jeans and a jumper.

CodenameVillanelle · 15/12/2019 19:27

I used to, a nice shirt and jumper, until my DS became too old to wear what I like him to wear and since he now refuses to wear shirts or jumpers unless he's made to there would be no point.
I'll make him wear a pair of trousers rather than trackies as his sole concession to a nice occasion.

Elbeagle · 15/12/2019 19:27

Not specifically bought for Christmas Day, but they have both got a smart ‘winter’ outfit that I bought about a month ago that they’ve worn to carol concerts etc and will wear on the day (tartan skirt, nice top and tights).
