Do you buy new clothes for Christmas day?

Argh. I've spent so much.

But I feel like the kids should have new clothes for Christmas day.

That's a thing, right?

We always had a new outfit for Xmas day growing up.

I'm on my own this year so I will be wearing running stuff as I try and amuse myself all day!

ooooohbetty · 15/12/2019 19:44

No. Not for children or adults.

Taytocrisps · 15/12/2019 19:45

My parents always bought us new clothes for Christmas Day, even though they weren't very well off. Money was tight and we usually wore hand me downs during the year, so having something new to wear made the day extra special. We also had new pyjamas for Christmas Eve. Mam and Dad saved hard all year to make Christmas special for us. This was in the '70s so I'm always amused to hear people describe them as new things. I've carried on the tradition with my own DC. That said, if you can't afford it, I wouldn't consider it a priority. Don't put it before paying your bills or feeding yourself in January.

God no no no no no - why do folk put themselves under such pressure?!

I fall in between the “PJs and comfies” and “dolled up” camps; as a youngster you just wore your “Sunday best” on Christmas Day and even that wouldn’t last much beyond having chocolate melted on it by 12

expatinspain · 15/12/2019 19:49

When DD was little I did this, usually a red dress or little Xmas outfit. Now she's 10 and I haven't done it since she was around six.

MrsDilligaf · 15/12/2019 19:58

I got DD an outfit to wear on Christmas day, but she's already worn it a couple of times. I'm happy she's getting the wear out of it, and she's comfy in it which is the main thing.

As kids we always had new clothes for Christmas Day , so I've kind of carried on with the tradition.

PrettyPurpleFeather · 15/12/2019 20:03

We just wear our posh party clothes so no need to spend extra money.

TheReluctantCountess · 15/12/2019 20:15

No, especially not if you are staying in your own home.

Marmite27 · 15/12/2019 20:17

Generally someone buys my kids an outfit that they want to wear.

Easter though, they always get a new dress. I think that’s traditional to update your ‘Sunday best’ at that time of year.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 15/12/2019 20:28

Yes, new pj's, slippers, dressing gowns for Christmas Eve for everyone.
New clothes for Christmas Day, although DS wants to wear his jumper from last year which is fine as we've only got family visiting us.
I got some sale bargains for my outfit - a poncho style jumper, nice leggings, and boots. Came to less than £40.

Although I always look forward to around 8pm when I can put my pj's on again!

Always done it, my parents did too so I've just kept up the tradition. DM always without fail bought me a tartan dress for Xmas day up until I was about 13 when she let me pick my own outfit (from Chelsea Girl!) Happy memories.

GetUpAgain · 15/12/2019 20:32

My DC are teenage so hard to predict what size or style of clothes will fit them, I used to get them new smart clothes each Christmas (school holidays tend to be when I notice they have outgrown clothes!). Not sure if I will do that this year.

ginyogarepeat · 15/12/2019 20:39

Yes. For DS a shirt and jumper that he'll get plenty of wear from beyond Christmas.
I always get myself a new Christmas outfit that I wear out a few times before Christmas, and on the day itself.
I really, really can't imagine having Christmas dinner in pjs that were slept in the whole night before! But I've always felt a bit stinky staying in pjs too long. I think it's what you're used to - as kids we always dressed up a bit for Christmas Day so I've just carried that on.

Rosere · 15/12/2019 20:44

I know a lot of people that do this. My family didn't as a child, and I don't now. To be honest I've spent that many Christmases in a pair of scrubs, I'm more than delighted to wear my well worn Christmas jumper, jeans and some festive earrings.

headsaway123 · 15/12/2019 21:09

Yeah we always wear new clothes on Xmas day!

reluctantbrit · 15/12/2019 21:16

We like to dress up for Christmas and when DD was growing a lot we normally bought something new in November but she often wore it already to a party and concert beforehand Christmas.

Now most stuff fits more than one season she wears things again.

OublietteBravo · 15/12/2019 21:19

It’s a thing in Iceland - otherwise the Yule Cat will eat you.

NerrSnerr · 15/12/2019 21:21

We don't buy new. My daughter may choose to wear something she has been bought but if not they'll probably wear Christmas jumpers. I'll just wear normal everyday clothes.

MotherHeggy · 15/12/2019 21:32

No. In my house we stay in pj's most of the day. Only get dressed to go out for a walk if it's not raining.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 15/12/2019 21:34

Erm, no. Heaviest spending time of the year for us. New clothes that aren't a gift just don't get a look in.

ForalltheSaints · 15/12/2019 21:38

No not at all. I would urge others not to unless they are clothes that would normally be bought. Fast fashion and low use clothes contribute to climate change.

itsboiledeggsagain · 15/12/2019 21:41

do your children only own tracksuits?

Mickhasnotorso · 15/12/2019 21:46

I bought mine a Christmas primark top for £1.30. They can wear it over the entire festive season and then it'll go to the charity shop.

LazyFace · 15/12/2019 22:11

No. And no Christmas PJ's/onesies/ bedding either.

80sMum · 15/12/2019 22:18

New clothes for Christmas day? Good Lord, no! Whatever for? We always wear comfy jeans and a t-shirt or similar (and before the family arrives I'm usually in my jog pants or pyjama bottoms!).

EmmiJay · 15/12/2019 22:26

Yep. Every year. I buy DD and myself new clothes for Christmas Eve (final shopping day so we like to look extra good), Christmas day outfits and shoes plus Boxing day sales outfits. Grin I found these tights for DD with a pattern that matches my skirt for Christmas day. I'm way too excited about it tbh LOL.
