Do you buy new clothes for Christmas day?

Argh. I've spent so much.

But I feel like the kids should have new clothes for Christmas day.

That's a thing, right?

@gangsterwrapper sorry in my sleep deprived state I misinterpreted the post

IdblowJonSnow · 16/12/2019 01:23

Not normally but I have this year, for me I mean. Its stuff I'll get plenty of wear out of, not novelty shite.
And the kids have got clothes amongst other things, again they could wear on/over xmas or at other times.

Tillygetsit · 16/12/2019 02:06

We have a daft Christmas tradition amongst the adults of the family of buying the cheapest, tackiest Christmas tat to wear on Christmas Day. My eldest dc will be joining in this year and 9 month old will be dressed as a Christmas pudding! It's a laugh.

Not new clothes but we do dress up in what could be described as Sunday Best.

Itstheprinciple · 16/12/2019 07:17

We always make an effort. In the past, I have either bought DD an outfit in early Dec that she wears for Christmas parties and then for Christmas day and for other occasions or I'll buy her clothes as part of her presents and she'll wear that for Christmas and then for other occasions. It's never anything too Christmassy so can be worn to birthday parties etc afterwards. On other occasions she has worn her Christmas jumper that she already had.

I wear a dress or sparkly top but usually something I already have.

Itstheprinciple · 16/12/2019 07:18

For me, PJs are for boxing day!

CherryPavlova · 16/12/2019 07:20

No. Not a thing at all.

MrsGrindah · 16/12/2019 07:25

No not at all. I would urge others not to unless they are clothes that would normally be bought. Fast fashion and low use clothes contribute to climate change

You could say that about pretty much every aspect of Christmas though.

Seahorseshoe · 16/12/2019 07:28

No.

MiniGuinness · 16/12/2019 07:29

The only people I know who would do this are religious people.

Lyricallie · 16/12/2019 08:38

Growing up we would always get a nice new outfit and wear it to mass and then Christmas dinner. We always have lots of people over to our house so it would be weird if we were in PJs also would be a bit cold going to church.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 16/12/2019 10:13

The children usually get a new winter-y party outfit and they wear that. They’ll usually already have worn it to a birthday party etc and they’ll wear it again frequently.

Snaga · 16/12/2019 10:20

My children get new clothes for Christmas but not for specific Christmas day wearing. On the day they can wear whatever they want.

happypotamus · 16/12/2019 10:36

When we were kids we got a new outfit on Christmas Day. We would go to a relative's house, so no sitting round in pyjamas etc.
I started that for DD1 by buying her a special outfit for her first Christmas and carried it on. It is left with their Christmas stockings. DD1 needs a new party dress most years, and would wear it twice over Christmas to my parents and in-laws and then to parties etc through the year. DD2 does not need a new party dress each year as she inherits DD1's old clothes but it would not be fair to only get one for DD1.
This year, for the first time ever, we are staying at home on Christmas Day, and DDs are looking forward to not having to get dressed at all and keeping pyjamas on all day.

MrsGrindah · 16/12/2019 11:35

We always dressed up for Xmas day when I lived at home. One year, entering stroppy teenager mode I decided to rebel by wearing jeans and an ordinary jumper. Nobody batted an eyelid which annoyed me even more! Next year I quietly resumed dressing smartly. Personally I love it makes the day feel special.

KimchiLaLa · 16/12/2019 12:43

Erm no. I did buy a nice dress for my toddler a few months back for parties etc and thought she could wear it on Xmas day too but it wasn't specifically for that, if you get what I mean. It was £7 from primark.

ManiacalLapwing · 16/12/2019 12:46

No, they wear best but not new. Jeans and nice t-shirt. If they only have trackies then I would buy some dark denim jeans or trousers and a nice non-Christmas themed t-shirt, polo or shirt that will fit for a couple of years.

Spacerader · 16/12/2019 12:48

We dress up for Christmas. My daughter usually gets a new dress for christmas that she will wear. Myself and dp will just wear what we have. So will ds mostly unless I find something he will really like, he doesn't like me buying him clothes because he is fussy

JaJoJe · 16/12/2019 13:15

my kids get new PJs on Xmas eve and wear them all through Xmas day.

I buy a new outfit each year but DH doesn't bother and just wears whatever.

huuskymam · 16/12/2019 13:16

New clothes for xmas day and Stephen's day and pjs. It's always been that way for as long as I can remember.

Strictly1972 · 16/12/2019 13:18

No. I’ll probably lucky to get my kids out of their pjs!

Lima45 · 16/12/2019 13:20

When I was small I had a new outfit on Christmas day. We all went to my Nan's house and had a family party so all the kids had new party clothes for it.

Now we stay at home. So we all get new pjs/lounge wear to wear on the day because we're not going anywhere. (Never Christmas themed tho, stuff that will be worn throughout the year)

caperplips · 16/12/2019 13:24

No we don't buy new clothes, It was a bit of a thing when I was growing up but I have not continued it with dd.

She is now a teen and will get some new clothes as presents and she may opt to wear them on the day or not.

We wear casual clothes for the day and change into something a bit nicer for dinner in the evening, but not full on party wear, more a nice top with jeans or a dress etc

RoseMartha · 16/12/2019 13:31

Only if needed. And no new clothes on Christmas day although we all (me,dc and extended family), make an effort to dress up a little bit.
