I found this beauty. A combination of gorgeous original features with a few modern touches. Light and airy. Beautiful grounds. Close to motorway networks to Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling. Eight bedrooms probably too much for me but I guess I could have some more children... Hmm.

@NeverTwerkNaked probably no point moving out of London just now as we both do niche jobs that are not really found elsewhere.

If we moved out of London to less specialist jobs we wouldn’t be able to afford the house we live in now (which is nowhere close to £1m)!

But once we have paid off our mortgage we want to retire outside London - perhaps Scotland where my DH grew up and we could get a very substantial property (almost a mansion or a small castle) for what we paid for our small terrace London home.

Here is the cheapest within 5 miles just for comparison!

gillyginger · 14/12/2019 23:55

Sorry, gone over budget, and miles Smile

BikeRunSki · 14/12/2019 23:59

8 bedrooms for £1M on the outskirts of Barnsley.

Although I prefer this 5 bed, for £900k this

mindproject · 15/12/2019 00:11

On the money.

Havant, Hampshire
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-70601191.html

This is quite nearby. I'm surprised it has been for sale for so long really as it isn't a massive price compared to some places in the area. So much potential, especially with the garden space 😍

Meshy12 · 15/12/2019 00:19

Just because I was curious, the cheapest around us in London consistS of parking spaces and garages up to £50k eg

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-79054664.html

Then houseboats (which they call 1 Bedroom houses) up to £120k

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-85980791.html

I then found this strange basement for £100k!

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-75636916.html

Then lots of shared ownership of two bed (normal) flats for £100k plus - for 30-35% shares

Cheapest normal property that isn’t retirement home or shared ownership I could find is the below “spacious studio flat” for £140k

www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/51623264?search_identifier=ae5cc8f008d777b26dde509424d21fd3

I agree that London property prices are bonkers

NeverTwerkNaked · 15/12/2019 00:58

@Meshy12 sorry should have been clearer - I meant move out and commute. From us it's only an hour to central London by train. (I go up a lot for work and so does DH). I realise the commute might be the deterrent but then lots of non London workers do long commutes too. It's more just curiousity, that it must feel quite strange to live in a very ordinary house yet know you can buy a mansion!

exexpat · 15/12/2019 01:12

Bristol is expensive, so for under £1m you are mainly looking at fairly normal houses in nice areas. I would probably go for this one, just for the view of Clifton Suspension Bridge (and all the shops and restaurants and good dog walks nearby), and spend the other £100k on doing it up: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-74760010.html

The most expensive place within about 5 miles of me is this one for £3m, with its own vineyard but a few weird bits of interior design. It's been on the market for quite a while now: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-76256393.html

Meshy12 · 15/12/2019 01:17

@NeverTwerkNaked ah yes it’s just the commute that puts me off to be honest as I’m one stop (10 mins train) from my office in London. So this place (zone 2) has been good for us thus far.

That said we will be moving to the suburbs of London (zone 4/5) now that we have a DC - bigger houses, bigger gardens and more value for money. you can get a decent sized family home for 6-700k depending on the suburb (still not a mansion though, and I appreciate that’s still a lot of money)

WTFdidwedo · 15/12/2019 01:19

Not my cup of tea but could always redecorate, or embrace the Cluedo-ness of it Grin

If I had no children I'd buy this
www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/28-Monument-Sq-Apt-4_Portland_ME_04101_M45788-88653
But not enough bedrooms so I'll have to leave it till they've all left home.

Perhaps this - I love all the period features.
www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/46-Western-Promenade_Portland_ME_04102_M41036-18448

Or maybe avoid the city completely and go for a mansion on the waterfront with a dock.
www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/47-Johnson-Point-Rd_Orrs-Island_ME_04066_M42483-50442

Sigh.

Lexplorer · 15/12/2019 01:24

kiwi we are in the same neck of the woods and that 15 million pound house must surely get a lot of aircraft noise? Stansted is only about 5 miles away!

TheoriginalLEM · 15/12/2019 01:31

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-83566292.html

I walk past this alot, so so crowded on the beach/promenade all weekend in winter all the time in summer.

midsomermurderess · 15/12/2019 04:04

This on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Quite bonkers.

FromEden · 15/12/2019 04:14

No period features to be found around here.

This one is probably around a million in GBP.

anxioussue · 15/12/2019 04:51

Nothing near £1million here www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-71292982.html is the most expensive

SexlessBoulderBelly · 15/12/2019 05:02

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-79812218.html 1mil

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-81617708.html - just under 1mil.

Anyone got £1Mil? :(

Gingerkittykat · 15/12/2019 05:32

6 bed, 3 bath, 1/2 acre for £600 000

TooMuch87 · 15/12/2019 05:48

I'd buy this one near Harlow, just because I love the look of Tudor houses. I'd completely redecorate the house and re-design the garden and then I'd pretend to myself that I was living in a National Trust property: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-65198586.html

rhubarbcrumbles · 15/12/2019 06:43

7 beds, 1/2 million pounds, riverside view in London !

here

Soontobe60 · 15/12/2019 07:19

Just under £1m gets you a beautiful period property in the North West! Just a stones throw from me.

This is the nicest one near me (for that price) outskirts of Bristol

SimonJT · 15/12/2019 08:12

@NeverTwerkNaked I don’t think I will ever move out of London. Where I live I can walk ten minutes to my sons primary school, it’s then a 30 minute walk to where I work (near the gherkin). If I moved out of London I wouldn’t be able to walk my son to school as he would need some sort of before school childcare and I would be far away from friends. When he’s moving from primary to secondary I am possibly going to move a bit further out to Stoke Newington.
