I love threads like these - i'd forgotten a cob was also a horse!

AutumnRose1 · 15/12/2019 09:53

I only knew it as a bad mood/sulk.

homemadecommunistrussia · 15/12/2019 09:55

A cob nut
I know it means a roll too, but never use it.

Juanbablo · 15/12/2019 09:59

Type of horse

highheelsandweathercocks · 15/12/2019 10:02

To me a cob is an ear of sweetcorn, as in corn on the cob.
To my Midlands hailing DH it's a bread roll. The first time he told me he'd got me some cobs, I was most disappointed to find bread rolls.

userxx · 15/12/2019 10:07

A crusty bread roll, best eaten with fuckloads of butter.

bluerad · 15/12/2019 10:33

My mum says "I'm sweating cobs" when she's hot. Can't see any links with bread rolls, horses or nuts there. Do we have any language experts to explain where the phrase comes from. She's from Lancashire so an expert in Lanky Twang would be best!

HeronLanyon · 15/12/2019 10:36

Yes I’ve heard ‘sweating cobs’ too.

JollyAndBright · 15/12/2019 10:41

I’m in Yorkshire but I only know it’s another name for a bread roll because I’ve read it on MN before.
I’ve never heard it used by anyone here.

Giggorata · 15/12/2019 10:42

A type of nut.
A horse

mamaduckbone · 15/12/2019 10:45

A crusty round roll.
As in 'a crusty cob'.

HoHoHoik · 15/12/2019 11:16

Cob means round, sturdy round/rotund rather than just circular so sweating cobs would mean sweating big, round beads of sweat.

bluerad · 15/12/2019 12:27

Ah that makes sense HoHo. Thanks for the explanation.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/12/2019 12:28

A bread roll from t’north or a mood.

shinynewapplesonachristmastree · 15/12/2019 12:34

A bread roll or a bad mood (Midlands)

Notquiteagandt · 15/12/2019 14:37

A bad mood. Id say someone has a "cob on"

Confusedbeetle · 15/12/2019 14:43

In Nottm it can be a bread roll, but also is someone "has a cob on " they are in a bad mood. A cob is a type of horse not just in one region but everywhere. Also a round stone foe cobbled paving, ans also a cob nut

MikeUniformMike · 15/12/2019 14:53

A type of horse (e.g. Welsh cob), a round bread roll, a sulk (cob on), a nut (cob nut).
