If you're in your 40s, what aches & pains do you have (no health conditions)

In the last few months, I've become very conscious of my knees as one or other of them aches, my right hip is often stiff if I've been driving for a long time or sit down in certain chairs and I haven't run for months because of my left ankle.
Is this normal? I feel too young! I have no underlying health conditions, am just over a healthy BMI & go to the gym a couple of times a week where I've had to modify what I was doing due to the ankle, knee & hip issues.

It's not unusual, cobweb. I'm sure you're fine, people have the odd aches and pains at all ages so please don't think the worst.

I've only had pains when I've injured myself in some way and occasionally posturally related. What you say about stuffiness after driving for a long time and sitting in certain chairs is very common.

My 40 year old son is a musician, stands for ages performing on stage and when not doing that, is working on computer for hours He has no end of postural problems which cause him pain, goes to osteopath/chiropractor regularly. There's nothing organically wrong with him at the moment but the pain is real - back, shoulders, even head.

We need to look after ourselves.

If you are really concerned you could ask your doctor for a referral to a rheumatologist (though I often think that is counter productive). An osteopath might be able to advise you on how to do things slightly differently to minimise pain and discomfort - worth a try.

Back problems - I have to be quite careful with it. I make sure my chair is just right at work, really take care when lifting weights at the gym. I really struggle if I have to stand still in one position for too long as it seizes up!

Other than that I'm fit as a fiddle.

LucheroTena · 07/12/2019 17:13

Stiffness and pain in my ankles when I get up that wears off quickly but I’m hobbling to the bathroom usually.

Winterdaysarehere · 07/12/2019 17:15

48 here.

No age related twinges as yet.
Now if you want to talk about grey hair.
And carpet matching curtains...
Blush

Strictly1972 · 07/12/2019 17:15

I get stiff hips if I sit too long & my lower back can be sore too. I’ve started Pilates which seems to be making a difference.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 07/12/2019 17:17

43 here. Healthy BMI. I find I ache in my hip joints if I am doing heavy manual work or walking longish distances or sitting on my arse for too long.
Neck pain if I sleep funny or too long.
I have had whiplash and am Hypermobile in most of my joints so knew I would get some aches and pains as I got older. My SIL complains of similar aches and she is a few yrs older than me.I think it is just one of those things as we age.
I do take a glucosamine supplement and cod liver oil tabs - I find they have helped in the 6 months I have been taken them.

GoldfishGirl · 07/12/2019 17:45

Mine are either related to old injuries or wear and tear from modern life.

Crappy sandles give me plantar fascitis.

Occasional knee twinges as I had the cartilage sutured following a sports injury.

Generally tight leg muscles.

I'm not sure what it's called but my fingers tingle. I've been to the doctor for the usual checks and they think it stems from my shoulder and neck muscles.

I've just got a standing desk and foot rest, seeing a physio, taken up yoga and pilates again and committed to a sports massage once a month. What I probably need is a new career that doesn't involve computers.

Aquamarine1029 · 07/12/2019 17:47

Peri-menopause causes no end of aches and joint pain.

Cobblersandhogwash · 07/12/2019 17:58

48 years old.

I'm getting pretty sick and tired of the pain I'm in. It's very wearying and boring.

I walk every day for an hour with the dogs and am generally always moving around.

Sciatica.

I also often have pain in my right buttock which is my piriformis muscle and I think it aggravates sciatica.

My left knee is painful and creaking.

Plantar fasciitis.

I think I'm going to take up yoga.

Sunnysidegold · 07/12/2019 18:26

I'm 39 and have noticed in the past year my knees creak going upstairs. I had a really sore and swollen ankle last month but could t remember moving or hurting it. It worried me.

I have a twinge in my right lower back - I think it's from how I lean when I stand. It really hurts at night so I'm going to go see go about it.

I also think my hearing has lessened slightly in one ear.

lilgreen · 07/12/2019 18:27

None. 48. BMI 22/23

MoobaaMoobaa · 07/12/2019 18:29

Loads, just had bloods and xrays done, waiting for a follow up appointment.

My job is very physical and I am exhausted most of the time. I was losing weight like I never have before and was eating more and more just to maintain a healthy weight. (had to drop some hours at work because of it, and have gained weight again)

Aches and pains everywhere, numb fingers, pins and needles in my arms and dead arms in The middle of night.

One knee is on its way out, as its gets stuck and is so painful when it's been bent more than 90 degrees. The oppersite hip keeps playing up every now then, so I end up walking funny.

I feel like I falling apart, and it's scares me how I'm going to be still working in my job until 66 or more. I don't think my body will last that long.

Because of my job I am really quite fit. But wear and tear is diffinetly catching up.

Stupiddriver1 · 07/12/2019 18:29

Only aches are related to current or old injuries. But then do I have the injuries because I’m older? Maybe.

So back is bad but i Broke it in an accident so not age related.

Ankle is bad and I can barely walk some days and been this way for over a year. I have stress fractures from exercise but I do wonder maybe I wouldn’t have got the stress fractures if I was younger. It doesn’t seem to be healing either which again I wonder if it’s an age thing.

DartmoorChef · 07/12/2019 18:30

50 and in a physical demanding job. I ache at the end of a shift. My fingers absolutely hurt so much some days.

lilgreen · 07/12/2019 18:31

I have had back pain after too much high impact Zumba but it resolved after a few months.

boredboredboredboredbored · 07/12/2019 18:39

Hip and back ache at 42 but I'm a nurse and put a lot down to that. I've also been a regular runner for 13 years and that's not helped my hip at all.

OverByYer · 07/12/2019 18:59

I’m 48, always kept pretty fit but having foot problems. Every morning the soles of my feet and Achilles are stiff

paranoiamumma · 07/12/2019 19:01

I am in my 40s and the only issue I have is my hips but I have undiagnosed hip displaysia ( they think from birth) and my neck hurts a lot, but that's an old whiplash injury .

Alittleprivacyplease · 07/12/2019 19:08

When peri menopause hit at 42 everything ached, my knees, ankles, thighs, I was like an old woman. Took up weights again after a 5 year hiatus and started taking daily tumeric and 5 years later nothing aches, I feel great other than the odd shoulder injury, but that's partly down to my job.

Amortentia · 07/12/2019 19:13

I’m starting to get an intermittent, weird stiffness and ache in one hip. The one thing that’s causing me most concern is the pain I’m getting in some finger joints. It seems to be a different finger every week and feels like I’ve broken it and it’s clicking out of place. My mum is riddled with arthritis so I’m pretty worried this is the start of it for me.

BikeRunSki · 07/12/2019 19:13

Niggle in my back, moves around, see a physio every couple of months.
Throbbing toothache at the moment.,flares up once or twice a year, I’m thinking of having that tooth pulled and replaced with an implant.
Callouses on the edge of my little toeS. My feet are very wide to start with and appear to be getting wider.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/12/2019 19:14

42, but had the same pains more or less since my thirties.

Sore shoulders and upper back, probably from the computer and carrying a bag. When I swapped from a handbag to a rucksack I just got pain on both sides rather than on just one. Upper back pain when I've been carrying my gym bag.

Hip pain after exercise or after gentle walking for about two hours. Knee pain sometimes as well. I put both of these down to having one leg 1cm longer than the other. It's ironic that exercise, which is good for me, is what causes a lot of it.

All sorts of other pains down the right side of my body (longest leg side).

Short sighted since teen years and continuing to get worse, but now also slightly long sighted as well - great!

Blood pressure occasionally too high.

notnowmaybelater · 07/12/2019 19:16

I'm 45 and overweight by several stone, do no sport but I have a job which is very active (on a 12 hour shift I sit for an hour to document events/ medical information, I'm mostly on my feet but it's not high intensity, without any lifting) and I have no aches and pains.

Several years ago I felt 90, my whole body hurt all the time and I could barely walk, but I'd gone 3 years without a stretch of sleep longer than a couple of hours and replaced sleep with sugar. Now that dc3 rarely needs me during the night I feel 50 years younger, though it took a year or 18 months to bounce back.

Mentally I'm not as sharp as I was in my 30s but that is partly down to stress - I'm trying to do a lot of things at once ATM, most of it in a language I didn't speak until my mid 30s, and I'm a bit overloaded mentally. Ivan sadly no longer stay awake for 36 hour stretches writing academically passable essays, I have to put more effort in and I'm mentally foggy without at least 6 hours sleep in 24, though I can sleep 10 hours given the chance and see the benefits - I rarely get the chance as I usually work lates but have to get up with the children.

I have good sleep hygiene (no screens of any kind at all upstairs, ever) which I think helps a lot.

I think getting sleep and being moderately active on your feet all day but not doing heavy lifting or running might be key. Although also luck. My mother had a knee replacement in her 50s and my father has always had ankle and foot problems so I know nothing is guaranteed. Neither of them have ever been overweight.

bonzo77 · 07/12/2019 19:16
  1. BMI 22/23. Tendinitis in right wrist: not too bad at the moment. Occasional migraines. Horrendous debilitating ovulation pain. My biggest problem is anxiety.
notnowmaybelater · 07/12/2019 19:18

I can not Ivan!
