If you're in your 40s, what aches & pains do you have (no health conditions)

In the last few months, I've become very conscious of my knees as one or other of them aches, my right hip is often stiff if I've been driving for a long time or sit down in certain chairs and I haven't run for months because of my left ankle.
Is this normal? I feel too young! I have no underlying health conditions, am just over a healthy BMI & go to the gym a couple of times a week where I've had to modify what I was doing due to the ankle, knee & hip issues.

I am 43, over weight, have planter fasciitis that kills in the evenings. Have a painful hip and swollen little fingers ? Arthritis.

Have not had a day off sick in 12 years so must have good immunity. Try and walk a few hours at the weekend.

Ginfordinner · 08/12/2019 00:34

Oh gosh, I didn't mean to sound smug at all Blush
I meant it was sad that so many women in their 40s have so many aches and pains.

IdblowJonSnow · 08/12/2019 00:43

Achy hips.
Constant sore throat
Stomach pains - hernia and intermittent IBS
Achy boobs - throes of perimenopause
Zero libido
Random twinges.
I'm a catch! Grin

  1. No real exercise but quite active with young dc. Healthy weight.
  • Chronic tiredness due to pre schooler who still doesnt sleep.
  • Shittery of peri menopause - greasy hair, mood swings, spots
  • Not too many aches and pains luckily - occ achy hip if i do a long walk, sore back from carrying dc, but otherwise ok. Trying to take up pilates but never have time to get to a class nearby.

I'm 50 now but got really bad back pain in my mid 40s, my back was never right after having SPD when pregnant. I've also had various running, swimming, and yoga related niggles in hips, knees and shoulder - I sometimes wonder whether I would have these if I hadn't exercised. I also started to get heart palpitations mid 40s, which were quite alarming, and have something in my face that hasn't ever been properly diagnosed but could be TMJ disorder, not really painful but really tight muscles. I also sometimes say"oof" when sitting down! My immune system is pretty good though!

I didn't expect to get any of these things until I was quite a bit older.

HandsOffMyRights · 08/12/2019 08:00

I should have added that
my eyesight has taken a big hit in my 40s and the 'lazy eye' I could always control when younger now has a life of its own and gets extremely tired/sore after a day at work.

moomoogalicious · 08/12/2019 08:06

49, lucky enough to have no aches and pain and so i am fitter than ive ever been.

Perimenopause however...

notnowmaybelater · 08/12/2019 08:52

Ginfordinner glad you posted again, sometimes tone / intent comes across completely wrong in a short forum post!

Gwenhwyfar · 08/12/2019 11:22

Oh, I forgot abut quite regular sinus problems, food acid, bloating, etc. But again, I've had these for a long time, not necessarily to do with being in my 40s.

stripeypillowcase · 08/12/2019 11:26

all you with joint pain - have a look at vit d3 and magnesium.

UnaCorda · 08/12/2019 11:35

45, BMI 19.8, no aches and pains, no grey hair. Good genes...

Percivalthebabyspider · 08/12/2019 11:56

I have had back pain and migraines from an old injury for years now.
Endo has returned though and also joint pain in thumbs and sciatica.

Ginfordinner · 08/12/2019 15:24

Although going through the menopause gave me some horrendous migraines, but I'm past that now.

Delatron · 08/12/2019 17:28

I didn’t think ginfordinner sounded smug. It is a shame there’s so many people at 40 in constant pain. I do really think exercise and especially Pilates (or yoga if you prefer) really helps.

I’m 43 and if I don’t do my Pilates class then I get back ache/can’t run. But the Pilates keeps me pain free and allows me to run injury free which in turn helps me keep fit.

Delatron · 08/12/2019 17:29

And whilst I’m not in pain the peri menopause ensures that I can’t sleep and I’m a moody cow for two weeks every month.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 08/12/2019 17:30

Yoga and Pilates seem to be the way forward! I will look into them for 2020 for sure.

Delatron · 08/12/2019 17:45

@cobwebsoncornices I would say your ankle/knee and hip issues are all related. It won’t be your knee that’s the problem, most likely tightness in the ankles and hips from running (lots of stretching after running is important).

It’s worth seeing a physio to get to the cause rather than just think this is how it is!

I think as we get older we need to stretch and strengthen and rebalance everything a lot more. I used to just put on my trainers and run. Now I warm up, do glute exercise to ‘fire up’the glutes (this takes pressure off hips). Then when I get back I stretch and foam roller. Ankle stretching and mobility is important.

Gwynfluff · 08/12/2019 17:49

As no-one has mentioned it, get a blood test done at the GP. My achy knees went once it was Found I had cut d deficiency and supplemented. Low iron can also cause achy joints and cramping. Again supplementing helped

lilgreen · 08/12/2019 18:16

Everyone should be taking vitamin d3 from October to May in UK. It’s government advice but I don’t know why they don’t publicise it more. Actually probably because they’d have to make it free!

Delatron · 08/12/2019 18:28

Yep vitamin D3 is so important. The sprays are great. They got my levels right up. Everyone should take it from October to March. There’s a kid spray one too.

Frouby · 08/12/2019 18:37

I think I do fairly well really. Am 42. Have a niggley left knee but other than that, don't really ache too much. I am overweight as well ( though am addressing that in January along with the rest of the world) but am fairly fit. I walk around 10k steps a day, ride 4 times a week plus other horse related duties, have a big allotment which is hardwork and did a bit of kayaking over summer.

My cousin who is the same age as me has all sorts of niggles and pains and issues mainly caused by sporting injuries.

Obviously not being sporty helps me out. I wanted to start rowing this summer (dragonboating) but watching the already pretty fit crew get out and hobbling or unable to raise their arms etc, flaring up old injuries am sticking to riding and the solo kayaking 😂. Am built for comfort not speed.

lljkk · 08/12/2019 21:31

October to May? Confused
I've had sunburns in mid April before in the UK.

Delatron · 08/12/2019 21:34

I said October to March.

PearTreeParty · 08/12/2019 21:39

48 and could do with losing a stone or two (size 14/16)
HANDS AND FINGERS. Stiff and achy.

I know I need to start taking supplements but I don't know where to begin. Would love to hear more about turmeric...
