If you're in your 40s, what aches & pains do you have (no health conditions)

In the last few months, I've become very conscious of my knees as one or other of them aches, my right hip is often stiff if I've been driving for a long time or sit down in certain chairs and I haven't run for months because of my left ankle.
Is this normal? I feel too young! I have no underlying health conditions, am just over a healthy BMI & go to the gym a couple of times a week where I've had to modify what I was doing due to the ankle, knee & hip issues.

44 I have Fibromyalgia so am in constant pain
Had four pregnancies with severe PGP and back/pelvis and hips have been knackered since then. I’m constantly shattered too I feel about 90

Why are my fingers puffy since going through menopause? Why is my stomach fat? (49)
It depresses me. Normal/thin, skinny actually, everywhere else.

I hobble in the morning,

lilgreen · 08/12/2019 22:13

Sorry I meant March not May. Though I do take it all year as I’m not a sun worshipper at all.

gower4 · 08/12/2019 22:16

I had bad joint pain and was found to be Vitamin D deficient.

bingowingsmcgee · 08/12/2019 22:20

I'm 41 and no aches and pains, but I have a slow, easy lifestyle because of dodgy mental health. Lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it.

Delatron · 09/12/2019 08:06

Lack of vitamin D can definitely cause aches and pains so always worth getting that tested.

WhoisitnowRalph · 09/12/2019 08:15

47, pre-menopausal, BMI 38. About to have surgery for chronic plantar fasciitis, also have long term sacroiliac pain from way before I was overweight. One very sore right hip - can't even cross my ankles due to the hip pain.

And my skin hurts, all over my body. Whether due to fatness or hormones I'm not sure!

Bluesheep8 · 09/12/2019 08:53
  1. In recovery from a frozen shoulder and I've got tennis elbow in the other arm.
hiphiphoorayback · 09/12/2019 08:58

40s one knee is really bad I have to crawl up the stairs. I have had physio in past but no help. It comes and goes but mainly comes. I was a runner when I was younger so maybe that is why I have it. It is an absolute bugger as I am not overweight and eat well.

LobsterQuadrille2 · 09/12/2019 09:28

This is really interesting! I'm 50, BMI about 19, have never done any exercise apart from walking everywhere and only an occasional twinge in one knee which I have been slightly concerned about. Agree with the PPs who mentioned genes - DM is nearly 90, no joint issues and still walks everywhere. I keep hearing/reading about peri menopause but don't think I have any symptoms yet, although I haven't read too closely in case I convince myself I have them.

Afternooninthepark · 09/12/2019 12:56

I do wonder if vitamin d plays a big part for me, I don’t suffer from many aches and pains at all in the summer months but stiffen up a lot in the winter.

bibliomania · 09/12/2019 13:39

Sympathy all round - I didn't realize that so many people were suffering so much. 45 and fattish and fine so far, touch wood. Yes to the creaky knees going up stairs and occasional stiffness but no real pain. Only one child carried to term so pregnancy didn't take such a toll.

ckc45d10 · 09/12/2019 15:48

Yes, it is important to have vitamin D tested regularly. Ditto for the mention about turmeric for anti-inflammatory support. For turmeric, absorption matters, and forms that are hydro-soluble absorb better.

TimeforanotherChange · 09/12/2019 21:19

Thanks to all who have posted helpful suggestions...I'm definitely going to check out turmeric and Vitamin D for a start. It genuinely never occurred to me that there might be something fairly simple that would perhaps help my aches and pains.

Sarcelle · 09/12/2019 22:05

@TimeforanotherChange The ones that worked for me are Nature's Best.

Delatron · 10/12/2019 09:24

The sprays absorb in to your bloodstream better. I use Better You vitamin D3 spray (about £9 on Amazon).
Just had my levels checked and they are 154 so top end of the range. I also find sprays easier to remember to take for some reason.

lilgreen · 10/12/2019 18:06

Make sure it’s D3 as it’s closest to the one our bodies make from the sun. I take vitabiotics high dose D3.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 10/12/2019 18:52

Sympathise with all the aches and pains!

Late 30s my back went to pieces (2 slipped discs, sciatica trapped nerves) and I started doing exercise, properly, for the first time ever

For me, the more I move the better I feel. Sitting still or standing does my back in. Walking, running, swimming and yoga make my back pain disappear

Late 40s now and have become a bit of an exercise freak Grin it is the only way to combat stiffness and pain

In terms of supplements, Magnesium really helps with muscular aches!

.... And keeping on moving.

TimeforanotherChange · 15/12/2019 03:36

Turmeric, D3 and Magnesium bought today.

Superdrug are doing 3 for 2 if anyone's interested!

(Fingers crossed now)

lilgreen · 15/12/2019 09:20

Good luckSmile

Keepmewarm · 15/12/2019 09:23

Early forties. Low BMI.
I used to get back pain but now do yoga twice a week and haven’t had pain since starting (while I only realised when reading this!). I really notice when I don’t do it both mentally and physically.

motortroll · 15/12/2019 09:26

Don't even start me!! I have a long term hip injury which I'm having treatment for so severe lack of exercise.

I also have muscular pains all over. I'm having blood tests!!

motortroll · 15/12/2019 09:27

Oh and I'm only 42 and I was previously (2018) VERY fit 😭

Mercedes519 · 15/12/2019 09:39

Have just checked my vitamins... after going nearer the window as I can’t read the small print until I get varifocals Hmm

It has vitamin D but not D3. Is it different?

Oh and I’ll drop frozen shoulder into my middle aged mix. Suddenly pain and can’t move my arm properly. Just happens apparently and especially to women aged 40-60...

Orangeblossom78 · 15/12/2019 10:57

I'm 43. Have odd one sided pain most days wonder if it is undiagnosed fibromyalgia. All down right side, eye, neck and back, since i had Shingles this side a few years ago.

Joint seem generally Ok but I try and do some yoga and pilates every week. Not too much though, and aqua aerobics.

I alos have tummy pains from abdominal surgeries, a tummy full of internal scars.
