If you're in your 40s, what aches & pains do you have (no health conditions)

In the last few months, I've become very conscious of my knees as one or other of them aches, my right hip is often stiff if I've been driving for a long time or sit down in certain chairs and I haven't run for months because of my left ankle.
Is this normal? I feel too young! I have no underlying health conditions, am just over a healthy BMI & go to the gym a couple of times a week where I've had to modify what I was doing due to the ankle, knee & hip issues.

I’m 46 and definitely have more aches and pains the last year or so even though I walk a lot and am only a size 8-10. I have had lower back ache since having my kids and regularly have hip ache but I was born with hip dysplasia and have had joint hyper mobility all my life too so maybe that doesn’t help. I’m going to take up yoga in the new year in the hope I’ll limber up.

Chocmallows · 07/12/2019 19:24

Early 40s and knees ache/hurt going up and down stairs if more than a few. Started recently and makes me feel v old.

Ylvamoon · 07/12/2019 19:24

No real aches and pains apart from an old injury which comes and goes with the damp weather.
BUT I do find exercising harder and if I don't keep it up like 2-3 times/ week I seem to loose my condition faster (and it's harder to build it up again!!)

CashFlow · 07/12/2019 19:24

Mid 40's and suddenly got painful and stiff fingers which is quite a worry as I could only halfway through my life Confused

Octopus37 · 07/12/2019 19:26

Aches and pains in my back, hips and legs, worse when its my period. Started an exercise routine with light weights about 10 days ago haven't been able to do it the last 3 days cause everything hurts. Went out and bought some of those stick on heat pads. Also my neck hurts, don't know what that's all about. I am 45 in a few weeks, feel old, I am a healthy BMI (22.3), but trying to lose a bit, reasonably fit as I do a lot of walking. Wondering if some of its peri-menopause related.

feelingdizzy · 07/12/2019 19:28

I'm 45 and quite fat,no real aches and pains , but I think I may run out of luck do 2020 going to lose that extra 3 stone (again)

lljkk · 07/12/2019 19:29

I'm very active, not at all stiff, but I've got lots of areas to manage. Life-related, not aging-related. Actually, my 20s were tough! 50s are a doddle in comparison. Age that \ areas started being an issue

17 \ whiplash (neck)
18 \ foot injury (been playing up lately, 35 yrs later)
mid 20s \ back pain, Achilles tendonitis, Raynaud's symptoms
late 20s \ groin strain
early 30s \ tendonitis in both arms & both knees, eye strain
45 \ (both) shoulder pain
50 \ plantar fascitis (both feet)

What a depressing thread. I am 61 and have no issues. I do Pilates.

notnowmaybelater · 07/12/2019 19:37

Ginfordinner why's it depressing, those of us without aches and pains should read it and understand that we're lucky.

blackteaplease · 07/12/2019 19:46

Good for you Ginfordinner. Not all of us are so lucky.

I'm 39 and this winter my right hip has been really aching in the cold or if I have to drive for more than 30 minutes. My lower back is knackered thaks to having PGP in 3 pregnancies.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 07/12/2019 19:48

Maybe Ginfordinner is pickled so pain free Wink

notnowmaybelater · 07/12/2019 20:01

As I feel younger and healthier at 45 than I did at 40 due to no longer having a toddler - preschool child causing long term intense sleep deprivation in combination with other young children meaning no break, I can well imagine feeling even more healthy when I eventually have a bit of time for myself once I finish the intense 3 year professional qualifications I'm studying for in a foreign language and no longer have to get up at 5:45 after a 12 - 22:00 shift and getting home at 23:00.

Your 40s can be a full on life phase, especially for those experiencing peri or menopause whilst putting a house full of teens going through puberty and younger children with different needs, before themselves, and almost as an afterthought working full time and perhaps still taking professional qualifications to get back on top after a childcare career break / going part time to juggle in your 30s.

Many people in their 60s are through the menopause and only have themselves to think of - lots of time for self-care and 8 hours sleep. Though others are in a different boat caring for their own elderly parents and also grandchildren while still working.

With genetics in the mix too it's all mostly luck - good health is something to be grateful for not smug and superior about.

75% pure luck, 25% not smoking or drinking too much, eating healthily and not being sedentary but not damaging joints through high impact, and good sleep hygiene.

  1. Overweight, if I'm honest as I've had to give up running which was my last exercise after a lifetime of sporty team games to a good level.

I have a bad hip, particularly when going up stairs and suspect I'm going to need a replacement at some point like my mother. Pains in my knees which come and go. This is what stopped me doing 5k 3 or 4 times a week.

Lots of tension in my neck and shoulders which is probably stress/work related. Often got knots in right shoulder around shoulder blade which DH kindly massages most nights along with my (attractive!) 'dowagers hump'.

Arthritis on and off in the three fingers of my right hand, running up towards my wrist. Will last several days - and then might disappear for weeks before reappearing.

No diagnosed health problems but just aware of never really being free from aches and pains now!

EskewedBeef · 07/12/2019 20:08

Only problems I have are longstanding joint pain from injuries suffered in my teens and twenties, and a bit of lower abdominal niggly stuff which I think is my baby making equipment going into retirement.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 07/12/2019 20:12

45 here.

I injured my right knee running a few years ago and have permanent swelling and pain, both knees are a bit swollen now.

I can't kneel down comfortably which is horrid. I have to brace myself to get down and up and can't sit back on my haunches at all. I spent several thousand Pounds trying to fix my knee privately and still haven't been able to run a single step. I gave up on fixing it a couple of years back and it is better than it was but still fairly awful.

Have had arthritis in my finger joints for a few years but mostly that's manageable.

Sarcelle · 07/12/2019 20:14

Peri menopause brought a myriad of aches and pains. Tumeric tablets really help me.

Ozgirl75 · 07/12/2019 21:45

42 and I have a bad Achilles brought on by running and continuing to run even when it was painful, so my own fault really.

Apart from that, in the past 2 years I have made a concerted effort to get stronger and fitter and loads of little niggles and aches have cleared up.

Foxes157 · 07/12/2019 22:12

Achey back and Creaky knees. The joys of having a physical job...

Nothing painful enough for painkillers and Doesn't really impede day to day life

Pinkarsedfly · 07/12/2019 22:15

I used to have terrible lower back pain and a stiff right knee.

Started yoga and running and both have disappeared.

Dustarr73 · 07/12/2019 22:56

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/12/2019 23:31

Everything went downhill for me when I turned 40. Literally the month of my birthday..

I developed a chronic pain condition in my face (trigeminal neuralgia).
And I had a hip that kept locking up that no amount of physio would fix. It turned out to be a hip impingment and I needed an op to dislocate my leg and shave away the top of the femur and hollow out the hip socket to make them fit and move properly.

So I'm stuck with a lot of pain on and off.

frankie001 · 07/12/2019 23:57

I’m nearly 40 and have lower back pain, hips that hurt at night and planter fasciitis. I am obese but have an active job. Really need to cut down on sugar and exercise more. Feel tired all the time.

HandsOffMyRights · 08/12/2019 00:06

46, overweight but no aches or pains and rarely ill.

However, as I've become older my mental health/stress and insomnia has worsened.

Jinglejingleholly · 08/12/2019 00:15

40

Bmi is borderline at 24. I have lost a little weight in the last year but have never been very overweight.

I have a general all over feeling of achy ness. I put it down to a fairly active job and I also walk to work everyday and do the school run on my way, in total over an hour of walking. I don’t exercise though as I honestly don’t have time (or energy), so don’t seem to be able to build up my strength or fitness properly.

I do no heavy lifting at all, actually I’m even paranoid about lifting anything heavier than a washing basket as I’ve had injuries and subsequent surgery in the past due to lifting.

I do wear trainers and comfortable clothing to work and I’m glad I can wear trainers as I think I would actually be at risk of injuring myself if I didn’t.

Jinglejingleholly · 08/12/2019 00:17

My immune system does seem to be pretty amazing at the moment. Do not want to jinx myself! But I don’t seem to catch anything despite being surrounded by multitudes of various ailments.
