Does anyone else remember getting fabulous christmas bonuses from employers?

I remember 30 odd years ago regularly getting bonuses of £800 at Christmas which was about a months wages.

Always got taken out to fabulous restaurants for no expense spared dinners too.

It doesn't happen anymore does it?

Does anyone know why it stopped? Or does anyone still get one?

It's not a moan, I just wondered why it had stopped when we are supposed to be better off now than we were 30 years ago.

I'll be getting a gift of about £10 from my employer plus a buffett lunch.

What will you be getting?

I recently left the only job that ever gave me a bonus at Xmas. It was the worst job in the whole fucking world. I'm much happier now in a normal job not run by drunk fuck wits. Less money but sanity intact.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 01/12/2019 01:24

Dh gets a decent bonus plus a Christmas meal & drinks.

I've only ever worked in the public sector. Best I've ever had was my last job where our bosses would bring prosecco in for the Christmas Eve lunch and then send us home early.

I was a nurse in the NHS for a lot of my working life so no bonuses there.

Many moons ago, one of my first jobs used to give us vouchers. I was ridiculously excited, used to buy all my Christmas gifts with them!

soulrunner · 01/12/2019 02:34

Good Christmas party but I tend not to go. Bonuses get paid in December but that’s performance related rather than a no strings bonus. It used to be paid in March. Financial Services so can’t accept gifts or entertainment from suppliers due to anti- bribery legislation

soulrunner · 01/12/2019 02:47

I remember my dad used to get all sorts from sales reps. One year he got given a soda stream ( when they were first out) and ten syrups - best Christmas ever!!

RonaldMcDonald · 01/12/2019 02:53

Used to get a Fortnum’s Hamper and cheque for £5k handwritten as a gift from the owner

Now nowt but v different job

HouseworkAvoider10 · 01/12/2019 03:39

For the most part, those days are long gone.

Soon enough, we'll all be paying to come to work.

SwampOfDeath · 01/12/2019 03:53

I used to work as a holistic massage therapist and would get very generous Christmas tips from my regular clients, hundreds of pounds. I was always really touched.
Now public sector, not a bean.

SantasLittleHelper2019 · 01/12/2019 04:01

We get an all expenses paid Christmas Party with a great buffet and a disco and a free bar.

We get annual bonuses but they are performance linked and paid in the summer.

DH gets an extra month’s salary in
December plus an annual bonus in spring. Lucky chap.

I remember as kids my parents had lots of friends working for the same company and they would get their Christmas bonus and have a party that night. All drinking and mince pies whilst about 15 under 1Os ran amock fired up on Lilt and Skip crips!

SantasLittleHelper2019 · 01/12/2019 04:02

The Christmas bonus party was in one of their homes which is why the kids were present.

Stupiddriver1 · 01/12/2019 07:02

Dh got a great hamper a few years ago, there was wine, baileys, port, Prosecco, all sorts of biscuits and boxes of chocolates, mince pies.....and rather randomly a pot noodle!

I previously worked for a firm where we all got a turkey and a bonus which was normally a month’s wage.

Neither of us get anything now.

StarlingsInSummer · 01/12/2019 07:07

My dad used to get an Xmas bonus though I didn’t know how much it was. We get a summer bonus, it’s worked out at the end of the financial year. Mine was 20% of my annual salary this summer.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 01/12/2019 07:15

I get £500 gross Xmas bonus. We have an all expenses paid lunch with free bar and taxi home later. A generous company shutdown from 20th to 6th Jan. Last year I was given 6 bottles of my favourite wine and a £20 sainsbury's voucher.

BikeRunSki · 01/12/2019 07:16

Public sector, nothing. We pay for our own Christmas meal.

Back in the Dar when I worked in the private sector, some companies gave us a bonus of £200 ish, some didn’t.

The unions have been negotiating our payrise since March, so when we get it there will be nearly a year’s back pay, which will amount to a small lump sum even if it’s 0.5%.

Ffsnosexallowed · 01/12/2019 07:24

Last year my boss left a box of chocolates in the main office and let us help ourselves - does that count?

ChessieFL · 01/12/2019 07:27

I get an annual bonus but it’s paid in March. The target is 17.5% of pay. At Christmas we get a party all paid for, plus we have an additional team meal which we pay for ourselves but the team leaders will be funding some of the drinks. At Easter we get an Easter egg. I work for a massive global company.

ChessieFL · 01/12/2019 07:28

Meant to add that I used to work for the public sector and got nothing from the company, although in the last couple of years my manager gave me a bottle of wine. I used to buy advent calendars for my team.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/12/2019 07:30

I am a manager of a coffee shop. We are a team of 6. We get £15 each off head office for Christmas meal, £25 vouchers each from area manager, and I also split all our tips that I saved over the year so we end up with about £250 each out of those. Plus our customers are extremely generous and we go home with lots of bottles of wine and boxes of chocolates.

Gormless · 01/12/2019 07:40

Another academic here: nothing. Not so much as a mince pie. I pay myself for the gifts I give to the professional services staff I work closest with.

Paddingtonthebear · 01/12/2019 07:55

I work for a small private business. We have a team Christmas meal or activity that is paid for.

mrssoap · 01/12/2019 07:58

Yes!!! Going back over 10 years now but we would have a lovely bonus if often get about £6-700, and they held a massive Christmas party with free drinks. Was amazing! I don't work there now but it isn't like this now, bonus has stopped and so have the parties 😔

Gingernaut · 01/12/2019 08:03

I've always worked for the public sector.

I have never had any kind of Christmas bonus and considered it a bonus if I got the actual bank holidays off work.

Pickledbrain1 · 01/12/2019 08:04

I work in pharmaceutical sector and we get a good bonus. Always have done. I’m not sure if it’s the norm. Our boss looks after his staff really really well. It’s one of the reasons I stay

EleanorReally · 01/12/2019 08:06

we used to get parties/meals paid for in the NHS back 30 + years ago.
