Does anyone else remember getting fabulous christmas bonuses from employers?

I remember 30 odd years ago regularly getting bonuses of £800 at Christmas which was about a months wages.

Always got taken out to fabulous restaurants for no expense spared dinners too.

It doesn't happen anymore does it?

Does anyone know why it stopped? Or does anyone still get one?

It's not a moan, I just wondered why it had stopped when we are supposed to be better off now than we were 30 years ago.

I'll be getting a gift of about £10 from my employer plus a buffett lunch.

What will you be getting?

My last job would be a large bonus in thousands, all expenses weekend away (city break abroad) with our partners and rest of team (managers only) plus Marks and Spencer Vouchers (whole company) and lots of wine and spirits from suppliers. Christmas party in a hotel which was free or heavily subsidised for employees (depending how well we had done) and partners could come but paid the going rate.

Work for DP now so it is a Christmas Party and a cash bonus (hundreds rather that thousands)

Work in a school, there is a work do but you pay for your own meal nothing is free.

speakout · 01/12/2019 16:29

Some employers still pay- OH gets an extra months salary at christmas time ( not taxable) and the same at summer.

I don't have an employer- I just buy myself a few goodies!

Nothing in the civil service either, though it's standard for bosses to pay for the wine for the team lunch, which we otherwise pay ourselves. Bit harsh actually as they don't get paid that much more than us.

Private sector here, in the good (past) days we would receive gifts from suppliers etc and they were shared amongst the whole team with the directors adding to the pile to ensure everyone got something. Plus a night out fully paid with taxis home.

We are getting a night out this year, but it is at an expensive venue and we have to buy our own drinks and get ourselves home.

There will be no gifts.

I remember when I joined my current company (take over) the existing staff telling us about their Christmas bonus, none ever came the way of the new staff, it was a very discretionary system where just a few people got reasonable sums and everyone else got resentment. They have either stopped or as I expect narrowed them down to the staff that don’t say anything.

Really I should look for a new employer but the commute is easy and my pay is good for the role and area, plus I find the job easy.

MondeoFan · 01/12/2019 16:42

We get a staff night out so food and an activity plus a £25 voucher for somewhere so roughly £100 spent on each employee and there are 12 of us

ErrolTheDragon · 01/12/2019 16:53

Private sector job, over 30 years service, never had any sort of Xmas bonus. I don't think DH ever had one either.

This year I think I may be getting a company logo'd shell jacket, which may be useful for gardening I suppose.

anonymouse70 · 01/12/2019 17:21

We have a fully expensed Christmas party at the local casino (all food and drink paid for) plus three days extra pay as a bonus. We also finish work on 23rd and don't return until 2nd January. So that's an extra four days holiday.

Can't complain Grin

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 01/12/2019 17:30

40 years in teaching. Never had anything. If we had a Christmas do, we organised and paid for it ourselves or brought goodies ourselves for a lunch after the children had gone home on the last day of term.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 01/12/2019 17:35

I'm in my early 50s and never had a Christmas bonus.

That's what happens when you work in public sector, charities and education.

motorcyclenumptiness · 01/12/2019 17:48

No bonus but I used to get triple time for working Boxing Day and NYD. Happy days!

Oblomov19 · 01/12/2019 18:07

Always had a paid evening Christmas do with meal and drinks. This year aswell.

No cash bonus.

Once I did get £250 in my payslip. I was thrilled.

HelenaJustina · 01/12/2019 18:35

Work in a school but not a teacher, so nothing from employer - there will be boxes of biscuits and chocolates in the staff room though.

otterturk · 01/12/2019 18:45

Private sector - dinner and drinks.

Previously at arms length public body - massive piss up and dinner, party until early hours with hotel paid for.

Ilikesweetpeas · 01/12/2019 18:54

Teacher here, nothing and if we have a works "do" we pay for it. My brother in private sector can't understand this at all!

shortsaint · 01/12/2019 18:55

Until I was about 35 the only Xmas bonus I ever had was £12 from M&S which was my student Christmas job. I was THRILLED. Then charity/cultural sector = none (though I think one year we paid for a Xmas do and in a moment of generosity the £20 or so was paid back to us). Now a Uni. It's all taxable benefits isn't it? So a paltry 1 drink + a buffet from a Uni restaurant to a max value of about £15. Exciting.

My bro however, in the private sector - hmmmm ...

OneKeyAtATime · 01/12/2019 19:13

In academia so I don't get anything but I do get a lot of time off out of term time so I don't feel I can complain

ListenLinda · 01/12/2019 19:46

This year is the first year i’ve worked anywhere that gives a bonus that I am eligible for. Perfomance related 3.2% of annual salary bonus and 2.3% annual pay rise. Works out at £510 before tax and ni and a £300 per annum pay rise.

CountFosco · 03/12/2019 22:28

Getting a bonus seems nice but it's cheaper for the company than the same money given as a payrise (because it has no impact on next years payrise - so no compound interest). And can't compete with a public sector pension.

We each got a chocolate advent calendar at work yesterday.

Logjam · 03/12/2019 22:39

We gave our employees an 2 extra days off (paid) before Christmas this year. . One of them suggested a meal out but they often work away from home together - I thought what they needed was more time with their loved ones. Their bonuses get paid quarterly and are unconnected.

Logjam · 03/12/2019 22:42

@longestlurkerever Dh used to work for the civil service and we had to put by £2k a year to pay for staff drinks and events - really frustrating but it had to be done.

wlv12 · 04/12/2019 00:17

NHS midwife here - so naff all.
Although last year the head of midwifery gave us a boiled sweet each. Xmas Hmm
