Does anyone else remember getting fabulous christmas bonuses from employers?

I remember 30 odd years ago regularly getting bonuses of £800 at Christmas which was about a months wages.

Always got taken out to fabulous restaurants for no expense spared dinners too.

It doesn't happen anymore does it?

Does anyone know why it stopped? Or does anyone still get one?

It's not a moan, I just wondered why it had stopped when we are supposed to be better off now than we were 30 years ago.

I'll be getting a gift of about £10 from my employer plus a buffett lunch.

What will you be getting?

My dad was a maintenance engineer, and when I was a kid his firm used to pay for the workers’ kids to have a Christmas party and a trip to the Pantomime, plus he used to get a turkey.

I have fond memories of those treats. You don’t hear of little kindnesses like that these days.

managedmis · 30/11/2019 22:13

Yes it's shit these days really.

We get a Christmas do, and a kids Christmas do too, so compared to others it's pretty good. Not good enough though.

Surreyhillsbutnobike · 30/11/2019 22:17

My dad still gets a hamper from his old employers... he is ninety. And medical insurance, those were the days

I remember getting a hamper back in the day. Then the higher earners got taxed on them as a Benefit in Kind and that was the end of the Hampers.

I think meals out may also be viewed in the same light, unless companies are clever on how they word the reason.

Clymene · 30/11/2019 22:21

When I was a kid, there was a big company Christmas party for all the employees and their families and we all got presents from father Xmas.

I used to work somewhere where everyone got given a turkey at Xmas which was weird but great.

Now I get the Xmas staff party which I could honestly live without!

bruffin · 30/11/2019 22:22

Dh and ds get around 10% bonus but not at Christmas.
I dont get bonus as I work in not for profit sector
In the past I have had small boneses,or a hamper

PhoneLock · 30/11/2019 22:23

I get nothing, never have. DH last got a Christmas bonus back in 1988.

ThePortIsSunny · 30/11/2019 22:24

Nothing as I work for a voluntary sector organisation. My boss does buy us small token gifts like chocolates or candles from herself.

WhoWants2Know · 30/11/2019 22:26

One of my employers does often send a lovely gift, and last year I had a tin of biscuits from a couple of clients. But it's more of a rare surprise than something expected.

AmIScary · 30/11/2019 22:27

Public sector and get nothing

mistydayswampwitch · 30/11/2019 22:31

I work in an nhs hospital. We get a coffe voucher for a small coffee in the cafe. Works out at £2.60. Yay!

mistydayswampwitch · 30/11/2019 22:31

Oh and that also a bribe to get you to have the flu vaccine. No jab no voucher!

thatguiltyfeeling · 30/11/2019 22:32

At the shop I work in we get a little bonus (however much she can afford depending on how much was taken, first year was £20 and a bottle of wine, last year was £10 and a bottle of wine. This year it looks like there's going to be less staff working over the holiday period so probably £20 again). First year she also paid for a meal out. Last year it was just the money and wine. This year she gave us £20 at Halloween too, I think because a new staff member just didn't turn up one day so we had to pick up the slack she wanted to use the money she saved not paying her to show us we were appreciated which was lovely, especially as id only been back at work for a couple weeks after a five month maternity leave.
At the nursery I'm not entirely sure, I haven't been invited to any meals, or even included in the secret Santa. Senior staff get to have a dominos after the children leave Xmas eve whilst they do paperwork though.

thatguiltyfeeling · 30/11/2019 22:35

My partners job pay for a meal out at a really lovely little restaurant, partners included. Unfortunately I can't go as I worked there but left under not very good circumstances (basically didn't turn up, had very bad mental health issues at the time but by the time I was better it was too late to apologise). They also pay for the two weeks they're closed over Xmas and NY and in the summer they do a family day at the grounds where there's loads for the kids and I think some nice alcohol for the adults (hasn't been there long enough to actually attend one yet).

ilovepixie · 30/11/2019 22:37

We get fuck all! And the only day we're off is Christmas Day.

Florencenotflo · 30/11/2019 22:37

Ooh! I just remembered, my Sister worked at M&S for about 18 months (few years ago now). Any staff working Christmas Eve used to get given any leftover food stock that would be out of date or to close to the use by date by the time they re-opened (I think these were the days they used to close for a few days, not just 25th). She had to call my dad to help her get it all home. They basically packed it all into bags and they just divvied our the bags randomly. She got 2 sides of salmon, a whole turkey, loads of sliced ham, about 20 pints of milk! The whole family ended up with random M&S food stored in their freezers 😂

holly40 · 30/11/2019 22:44

Local authority so nothing. Staff xmas do is arranged by the employees and costs £20each to attend. Includes a buffet but no drinks.

Best bonus I ever had was as a trainee at small private company. £100 and a box of Thorntons. Plus a great xmas do with bowling, a sit down meal, then an evening party in a nice pub. Everything paid for by the boss. It made me feel appreciated and pleased to be working for them (opposite of LA!!)

NemophilistRebel · 30/11/2019 22:46

We get performance related bonuses at christmas.
Can range from nothing to maybe as much as £4K.

Nillynally · 30/11/2019 22:47

Teacher here. we have a Christmas lunch with the children (a working lunch then) that we have the privilege of paying for ourselves. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy sitting with my class and I even enjoy the meal but if you're going to take a lunch break from me at least pay my £2.50 dinner bill.

BelaLug0si · 30/11/2019 22:48

NHS - get nothing.
20 years ago worked elsewhere in a much smaller dept and the doctors took us all out for lunch (only 5 staff plus 2 medics). I had loads of samples to prepare in the afternoon was it wasn't very relaxing!

TommyShelby · 30/11/2019 22:51

I get the square root of diddly squat...

(Civil service)

Aurorie11 · 30/11/2019 22:52

Also public sector nothing, costs me as I buy gifts for my team which i pay for

icemelting · 30/11/2019 22:52

In my last job we had an all expenses paid ball with top entertainment- Elton John one year but it was normally in the summer. We also had all expenses paid days at the races and money to throw at the bookies. Christmas bonus was earnt through the year, one year was half a years salary.

converseandjeans · 30/11/2019 22:55

Nothing. Secondary school teacher. Don't even get school Christmas dinner paid for let alone a meal out somewhere!

DesMartinsPetCat · 30/11/2019 23:02

Not technically a Christmas bonus but my annual bonus pays out on the last pay day before Christmas, as does my husband’s.

Still waiting for confirmation of the full amount, but should be between £14,900 and £16,600 gross. Husband’s will be between c. £13,500 and £15,000 gross.
