Who knows what 'Mx' is?

I'm just wondering how many people have heard of 'Mx' as a title. It can be used by either gender, and is increasingly accepted when filling in online forms and suchlike.
I use it - it's on my driving licence even, but some of the drop down menus don't have it as an option. My favourite is EDF electricity who have Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Dr, Prof., Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant Major, and a MASSIVE list of other military ones, then Sir, Dame, Lady etc... but no 'Mx'.
I'm just wondering how many people have even heard of it.

never heard of it

Tableclothing · 15/11/2019 16:25

I've heard of it, but have no idea how to say it.

Wishforsnow · 15/11/2019 16:25

Never heard of it. Seems pointless.

Reachedsohigh · 15/11/2019 16:26

My son has a teacher that is Mx ......
I have no idea why, neither does he

MIdgebabe · 15/11/2019 16:26

Either gender? Do you mean either sex? It's a bit rude to talk about gender as a binary.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 15/11/2019 16:26

Never heard of it. Thought it was going to be some drug thing

EmpressJewel · 15/11/2019 16:27

I have heard of it, but only because an ex employee wanted my organisation to change our employee database to include Mx as a title.

I'm not bothered about titles. I can't remember the last time anyone used my title.

PurpleDaisies · 15/11/2019 16:27

Yes, from on here but I’ve never seen it used in real life.

SoupDragon · 15/11/2019 16:28

I've heard of it but only on MN. I think it's daft and a bit "look at how edgy I am". It's all personal choice though.

MinnieMountain · 15/11/2019 16:29

I've heard of it but what's it supposed to mean?

SoupDragon · 15/11/2019 16:29

I wonder how many men use it.

SyntheticPumpkin · 15/11/2019 16:29

I’ve heard of it but personally wouldn’t use it as I’m happy with Ms

Which is still misinterpreted by some people as “the one you only use if you’re divorced”.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:29

@Wishforsnow In certain instances it can totally override any sexism being applied, since people can't be prejudiced against your gender if they don't know what it is.

Do you really think that's not a useful tool to be able to use?

I heard someone referred to as Latinx. It is a gender neutral form of Latino or Latina. So, I don’t think Mx is that strange.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:31

@MIdgebabe Yes, I meant sex. You're right, I'm sorry.

OP posts:
MIdgebabe · 15/11/2019 16:32

Well funnily enough i think it does say something about someone's gender. Possibly that gender identity is very important to the person using it.

Batqueen · 15/11/2019 16:32

Yes, heard of it. Not that mainstream yet though.

FurryDogMother · 15/11/2019 16:32

I have a couple of friends who use Mx, so yes, I know of it :)

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:34

@SoupDragon I can't speak for anyone else but for me it's not about being edgy (I'm really not edgy, I'm a bit of a nerd), but about my not understanding what my biological sex has to do with anything at all when I'm paying bills or opening a bank account or getting a membership for something.

stoplickingthetelly · 15/11/2019 16:34

New to me.

Beamur · 15/11/2019 16:37

I've seen it and dislike it.
The whole business around Miss/Mrs/Ms is tedious enough already without this gendered shite being added.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:37

@MIdgebabe For me, gender identity strikes me as an irrelevance. 'Mx' obviates it.

OP posts:
Beamur · 15/11/2019 16:37

Better to do away with the lot of them!

SyntheticPumpkin · 15/11/2019 16:38

@Eckhart but how does that work unless you have a unisex name?

If you’re applying as (say) Amelia Smith, you’re going to be “read” as female regardless of title.

FlibbertyGiblets · 15/11/2019 16:38

Tbh I assume that Mx is used by women not men so to me it is no disguiser of sex iyswim.
