Who knows what 'Mx' is?

I'm just wondering how many people have heard of 'Mx' as a title. It can be used by either gender, and is increasingly accepted when filling in online forms and suchlike.
I use it - it's on my driving licence even, but some of the drop down menus don't have it as an option. My favourite is EDF electricity who have Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Dr, Prof., Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant Major, and a MASSIVE list of other military ones, then Sir, Dame, Lady etc... but no 'Mx'.
I'm just wondering how many people have even heard of it.

@Beamur It's actually ungendered shite. Why is it tedious? You choose what you want to use then you use it.

Caaarrrl · 15/11/2019 16:39

How do you pronounce it, OP? I've heard of it but never known anyone to use it so aren't really sure on pronunciation.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:40

@Beamur I agree, I don't know why we need anything at all!

@FlibbertyGiblets No, I work in an office with lots of clients and we've had quite a few previous 'Mr's change to Mx.

I've heard of it but wouldn't know how to pronounce it.
I use Ms or Dr on forms because I don't like using a title that denotes my marital status but I think we should just do away with titles really.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 15/11/2019 16:43

But it's bollocks isn't it? Everyone will know whether you're male or female from your name anyway. What's the point?

Beamur · 15/11/2019 16:44

We agree on that Grin
My objection to honorifics is because I really dislike the way it labels women specifically as being married/unmarried. In a way that is not applied to men.
Maybe Mx will catch on, maybe not. If it essentially means nothing at all then why bother?

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:45

Yes, that's true @SyntheticPumpkin. Some forms accept an initial. Some people feel strongly enough to change their name to something non-specific.

SoupDragon · 15/11/2019 16:46

If you do away with titles, it will annoy the people who expect to be called "Ms Dragon" rather than "Soup" by people they don't know personally or are dealing with in a professional capacity.

SoupDragon · 15/11/2019 16:47

(I used my posting name as an example - I am not one of those people!)

FuckeryOmbudsman · 15/11/2019 16:48

"Everyone will know whether you're male or female from your name anyway. What's the point?"

Really?

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:48

@Beamur Yes, I totally agree. I'd rather use nothing. But nothing isn't an option in many cases. It's often a box with an asterisk that you have to fill in. It's daft.

OP posts:
Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:51

@Caaarrrl I've heard it said as 'mix' and as 'Mercs' (like the car)

OP posts:
Cailleachian · 15/11/2019 16:52

I've heard of it, I quite like it, but its not widely used enough for me to use it myself.

ATM I'm a Ms, as I prefer not to reveal my marital status to all and sundry, I'd rather not reveal my genital configuration either, but such is the society that we live in that its expected.

I'd like to be a Mx

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:52

@SoupDragon That's a very good point, re 'Ms Dragon' being a more official way of addressing someone than 'Soup'. Hadn't thought of that.

Bluetrews25 · 15/11/2019 16:53

I came on to say Mx = mastectomy, but see I'm a bit late to the party!
As you were....

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 16:54

@Cailleachian Totally agree re marital status and genital configuration. And love the way you've phrased it too!

BlueJava · 15/11/2019 16:56

Yes - I had this on a form as an optional title the other day. Mx is so that it can be Mr, Ms, Miss, Mrs whatever. I selected it just because I could!

NeedAnExpert · 15/11/2019 16:59

I use Mx when I can. I consider titles to be completely meaningless. Otherwise I use Ms Myname (because it’s nobody’s fucking business whether I’m single or not).

Ohyesiam · 15/11/2019 17:02

I’ve hard off it, but not heard anyone use it.
I’ve just got married, and I’m still a Ms.

Lysianthus · 15/11/2019 17:02

It's how my DM signs off her texts to me.

WildRosie · 15/11/2019 17:03

In my business, 'Mx' means 'maintenance'.

BlankTimes · 15/11/2019 17:07

My favourite is EDF electricity
Try Fortnum and Mason, their dropdown's pretty extensive.

lazylinguist · 15/11/2019 17:09

The onus (legally and morally) should be on society to not discriminate against people on the basis of their sex or marital status, rather than on individuals to have to keep changing the way they identify or title themselves to hide their gender or marital status in order to avoid being discriminated against. So I am perfectly happy to openly state my sex and marital status.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 17:10

@blanktimes That's WAY better than EDF!!
