Who knows what 'Mx' is?

I'm just wondering how many people have heard of 'Mx' as a title. It can be used by either gender, and is increasingly accepted when filling in online forms and suchlike.
I use it - it's on my driving licence even, but some of the drop down menus don't have it as an option. My favourite is EDF electricity who have Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Dr, Prof., Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant Major, and a MASSIVE list of other military ones, then Sir, Dame, Lady etc... but no 'Mx'.
I'm just wondering how many people have even heard of it.

@TreesSandSea I've met several former 'Mr's who use it. For me it isn't an extreme version of Ms.

Sure I can see trans people using it. But better just to get rid of titles altogether. I never give a title unless forced to.

Beamur · 15/11/2019 18:17

I think you're probably right TreeSandSeas given how poorly understood Ms is, I reckon most people will imagine it means the same. I'd be very surprised if men started using it in earnest.

RebeccaCloud9 · 15/11/2019 18:21

For me, it screams either 'I'm transgender' or 'I'm so woke it hurts'.

How should it be pronounced? Mucks? Mix?

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 18:24

@caranconnor That's what I thought until this thread. Somebody posted that using a title is more official than using first names, and fits certain circumstances better. It made me think.

I still think it's quite often unnecessary though, and that we use titles more often than we need.

I use Ms, and still get people who say they have never heard of it. And that has been around for years. And lots of sections of society are very conservative, you will get judged.

Hairsprayqueeen · 15/11/2019 18:26

I've heard of it and have a transgender friend who uses it. Still wasnt sure what it meant.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 18:26

@RebeccaCloud9 Either pronunciation is right as far as I know. I guess it will mean those things to some people whilst it's still quite new, and less and less as more people use it.

OP posts:
Eckhart · 15/11/2019 18:28

@caranconnor Wow, I didn't realise there were still people who hadn't heard of Ms!

OP posts:
tinyfierce · 15/11/2019 18:31

What's the point? Surely when you fill in the box for "first name" it becomes obvious you're a man or a woman? Unless you're one of those rare people with a unisex name, Patricia or Adam is usually gonna give the game away.

Bickles · 15/11/2019 18:32

I’ve heard of it but don’t really understand it. Are you a man or a woman?

noblegiraffe · 15/11/2019 18:33

I’d assume female and think it was something to do with womxn.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 18:36

@tinyfierce RTFT, that discussion's been had upthread.

@Bickles the point is to do with not wanting to express whether or not you are or identify as a man or a woman. You'd have to ask each person for the reasons why they don't want to express it, though.

OP posts:
Tippexy · 15/11/2019 18:36

Mx means that I should avoid them as they’re not my type of person! Grin

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 18:41

@Tippexy What would you do if you found out a friend was using it?

OP posts:
Bickles · 15/11/2019 18:47

I don’t know why anyone would not want to express it really. Are you afraid of sexism in your line of work? Is it a bit like Jane Austen and others using a male pen name?
TBH I’d go Hmm Confused and ignore!

MartiniDry · 15/11/2019 18:48

My experience of MX has been solely with people who believe that they don't have a sex.
To me, MX means motocross.
I tend to avoid people who use it as an alternative to Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms/Doctor/Professor/Captain etc.

ClapHandsAndSaveTheFairies · 15/11/2019 18:48

I think it's great and I would have opted to use it if it had been an option when I was young.

I hated Miss and when I married I got sick of Mrs so I went with Ms and always will now.

Mx is great if you feel like I do. Mx is great for trans or non binary people too.

Mx can be ignored on a personal level if you don't care to use it for yourself because it's noyb if someone should be allowed to use it, and without being derided for it.

I don't know why people have to get to fucking anal about things which don't concern them.

This isn't on response to you, OP, just everyone who deserves a Biscuit of shame for being overinvested in what others would like to be called.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 18:51

@Bickles Personally I don't see why I need to express my sex to make, for example, an online purchase for dog food, or something. I don't see whose business it is. There's no way any organisation would ask 'Penis or vagina?' but that's essentially what they're asking.

I'm sure many people will use it for different reasons, though.

OP posts:
safariboot · 15/11/2019 18:52

Prefix used by non-binary / genderfluid / etc people. Pronounced "Mixter".

I've yet to encounter anybody who uses it. Like some others, I think I first encountered it in the context of an option in my company's client database. Though it doesn't seem to be there at the moment, maybe it's been turned off. If we had a client who really insisted on it I'm sure it could be added.

Human nature. We are social animals and so we "police" group behaviour. If the social contract is changing, as it always is, people will discuss it until a new broad consensus is arrived at.

I find your tone in the comment above quite interesting, very strongly worded about something you think others shouldn't care about. Why do you care if someone disapproves of a particular title?

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 18:55

@ClapHandsAndSaveTheFairies There's been a lot of judgement on this thread, when the question was 'Who's heard of it?', rather than 'What do you think of it?'

But those who want to be judgemental will; if I judge them I'm just as bad. Like you, though, I do find it hard to understand the people who come just to criticize.

OP posts:
UhareFouxisci · 15/11/2019 18:57

I have heard of it. if it had been around 20 years ago I might have adopted it myself I suspect. I have always hated the "miss mrs or ms" question that women are asked but men aren't. I escaped that by getting a doctorate but that's quite a drastic solution just to be able to say "it's Dr actually" so I suspect 20-something me might well have chosen to say "it's Mx actually" (but I don't know how to pronounce it either)

I think you are mistaken that the use of the gender-free title stops people from judging. people always judge - perceiving nuanced information and deriving likely consequences is an intrinsic part of human intelligence. this doesn't have to be in a bad way but you can never stop people from making judgments and Mx does say "firmly on the woke bandwagon and probably has green hair" which will close some doors, but open others.

caranconnor · 15/11/2019 19:00

Yes people will always judge. People judge the Ms as a rabid feminist which is a judgement I am comfortable with.

I know what I’d do.
