Who knows what 'Mx' is?

I'm just wondering how many people have heard of 'Mx' as a title. It can be used by either gender, and is increasingly accepted when filling in online forms and suchlike.
I use it - it's on my driving licence even, but some of the drop down menus don't have it as an option. My favourite is EDF electricity who have Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Dr, Prof., Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant Major, and a MASSIVE list of other military ones, then Sir, Dame, Lady etc... but no 'Mx'.
I'm just wondering how many people have even heard of it.

Oh and I think Mx sounds/looks pretty silly tbh.

Lexplorer · 15/11/2019 17:11

In Lloyd's bank filling in forms and was asked my title. I said 'Ms', she said I don't like that, I'll put 'Mrs' down, that sounds nicer. I assumed the implication was that I was an old spinster, no chance of a longed-for husband and she was doing me a favour. Roll on Mx.

OrangeZog · 15/11/2019 17:13

It can be used by either gender

That implies you think there are only two genders.

Mx is probably better known by those in specific job roles and certain ages but yes, I know what it stands for.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 17:13

@Lexplorer Wow. Did she like your actual name or did she change that to something she preferred, too??

Anyone using it is likely to give precisely zero fucks what you think, thankfully.

SunshineDays2019 · 15/11/2019 17:14

I thought people who id as both genders use Mx? E.g. the singer Sam Smith.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 17:15

@OrangeZog You're right. That's twice on this thread I've made the same mistake. Sorry.

The onus (legally and morally) should be on society to not discriminate against people on the basis of their sex or marital status, rather than on individuals to have to keep changing the way they identify or title themselves to hide their gender or marital status in order to avoid being discriminated against. So I am perfectly happy to openly state my sex and marital status.

Makes no sense. I how will society change anything if those who think it should change do fuck all to change it?

Keep perpetuating the misogyny in the hope it will disappear on its own?

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 17:16

@SunshineDays2019 Yes, I'm sure they do, but other people too. Anybody can use it.

LollipopViolet · 15/11/2019 17:17

Hope you corrected her Lex, that's not on at all!

I use Ms, not sure I'd use Ms but think it's great to have that option too.

LollipopViolet · 15/11/2019 17:18

Aargh, sorry meant to say not sure I'd use Mx - silly phone!

autumndreaming · 15/11/2019 17:19

Never heard of it or seen it anywhere. I think I would think it was a mistake

Hirsutefirs · 15/11/2019 17:20

It’s pronounced “motocross.”

titchy · 15/11/2019 17:21

In my experience Mx is used by those who have a point to make about their gender identity not being the same as the one identified at birth - the trans movement has co-opted it.

Marylou2 · 15/11/2019 17:21

Would you put Mx on a job application? I don't disagree with your right to do so but I would be concerned that some employers would just see this a whole world of potential pain.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 17:21

@hirsutefirs Grin

SnorkMaiden81 · 15/11/2019 17:22

Motocross.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 17:23

@Marylou2 Yes, I would. What pain do you think they would envisage?

OP posts:
weebarra · 15/11/2019 17:23

I know what it means. Unfortunately in my like it has been shorthand for mastectomy. BMX will never mean bike again ☹️

SoupDragon · 15/11/2019 17:24

I how will society change anything if those who think it should change do fuck all to change it?

How will society change if those who think it should change just hide the "problem"?

GothMummy · 15/11/2019 17:25

Have seen it on an applicant's form but I was not sure how to pronounce it so I guessed and said it as "Mix".... Was that right? I had not seen it before.

WhatsMyAgeAgain0 · 15/11/2019 17:25

Mx is used for people who do not identify as either gender.

It’s rare but I’ve seen some

SirGawain · 15/11/2019 17:27

Lady Gawain gets very annoyed if someone refer to her as Ms Gawain; she will point out that it’s Mrs Gawain.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 17:27

@WhatsMyAgeAgain0 Or people who don't wish to specify which gender they identify as.

OP posts:
Eckhart · 15/11/2019 17:28

@GothMummy Yup, 'mix' is one of the correct ways to pronounce it.
