Who knows what 'Mx' is?

I'm just wondering how many people have heard of 'Mx' as a title. It can be used by either gender, and is increasingly accepted when filling in online forms and suchlike.
I use it - it's on my driving licence even, but some of the drop down menus don't have it as an option. My favourite is EDF electricity who have Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Dr, Prof., Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant Major, and a MASSIVE list of other military ones, then Sir, Dame, Lady etc... but no 'Mx'.
I'm just wondering how many people have even heard of it.

@caranconnor And I think, in many cases, it might be to do with not caring how conservative society is (or isn't), rather than not knowing.

@Eckhart That is fine, your choice. But depending on your line of work it could really limit your career choices.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 12:31

@caranconnor Thanks. I appreciate your support.

I use Mizz as I identify as a 1980s teenage girls' magazine.

caranconnor · 16/11/2019 12:35

And personally I think titles are totally unnecessary. So I struggle to see why anyone would care enough about a title to affect their career prospects.

rebecca102 · 16/11/2019 12:39

Not specifying gender is what it's used for

caranconnor · 16/11/2019 12:42

Except your sex is obvious as soon as someone actually meets you. And no one at work will give a toss what gender you decide you are.

caranconnor · 16/11/2019 12:43

Much better just to have no titles at all.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 12:45

@Goodnightseamer And all you want is 'A Little Respect'? Wink

SuperSange · 16/11/2019 12:46

For me, it means that the reason you're asking my marital status is invalid, so it's not your fucking business. I'm not woke at all, in the slightest but will use Ms or Mx, depending on how much the request has pissed me off.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 12:48

@caranconnor How do you know?

OP posts:
caranconnor · 16/11/2019 12:51

There was FOI request to Local Authorities about how they monitor HE families. A lot didn't respond, but of those who did the majority said they did nothing unless someone contacted them with a concern.
Most Local Authorities who had staff to support HE families have cut these resources. Most Local Authorities are struggling to deliver services they have to deliver. They simply don't have the resources to visit HE families unless someone has decided in that authority that it should be a priority.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 12:52

@SuperSange Yup. Lots of people on the thread seem not to understand why the request would piss anybody off. I can't understand why they don't understand! It seems they've decided 'Mx' means woke and with blue hair, but I'm nerdy and have grey hair. There's a lot of prejudice!

caranconnor · 16/11/2019 12:55

Sorry wrong thread!
Sex is obvious, especially when someone speaks.

ShippingNews · 16/11/2019 12:57

How is it pronounced ? Mix ?

BigChocFrenzy · 16/11/2019 12:58

I'm a GC feminist and I totally condemn any boss who bins CVs because of "Mx" or "gender studies"
I'd regard that as transphobic, irrelevant to the job requirements, very unfair
(whereas saying that transwomen are not women is just stating biology)

I agree with pp:
why do we need titles at all, other than in an organisation where it would be relevant, such as the military ?

caranconnor · 16/11/2019 13:00

I am not defending my ex boss, I simply shared it to say that unless you care strongly about using titles like this, then don't in a work situation.

NotDavidTennant · 16/11/2019 13:03

Why do 'woke' people have such a thing for the letter x?

Mx, Latinx, womxn, folx...

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 13:07

@BigChocFrenzy I totally agree with you. Somebody upthread pointed out that we still use titles to denote more official relationships, and I can see why a person might prefer 'Mr Smith' rather than 'Bob' in some situations. Gave me food for thought.

@ShippingNews Yes, or like 'mercs', and a pp said it's short for 'Mixter' which I'd never heard before and thing is a) brilliant and b) amusing!

OP posts:
Eckhart · 16/11/2019 13:09

@NotDavidTennant I hope nobody tries to speak for woke people... Wink

I don't think it matters what I think? If I can make somebody a little happier or more comfortable (or whatever) by referring to them as mx as a sign of respect I will. In my previous position a customer requested it my database wasn't set up but I found a way around it and they was refered as Mx. I am a Mrs personally it doesn't bother me Miss Ms Mrs no title whatever. I actually feel quite lucky it doesn't bother me as it causes a great deal of stress for some

Thehagonthehill · 16/11/2019 13:38

Paper apply cation forms were so much easier as I just used to leave the prefix blank.
Ms isn't pretentious,Miss announces you as a single women and I didn't want that on post.I married but kept my maiden name and so Mrs didn't fit(as I my ex would, and did, find himself called Mr Onthehill),I divorced so against n not Miss or Mrs.
I'm happy with no pronoun in real life as I give my first name as so many people can't manage my Surname. On firms I go with Ms if I have to.I have no use for Mx.
And just as people make assumptions about Ms,which has been around for decades they will do the same with Mx.

Thehagonthehill · 16/11/2019 13:39

Application-my phone at its best making assumptions.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 13:52

@PH30B3 That's how I feel too. There's a lot of judgement and disrespect on this thread, I don't know why people have got het up and some even sweary and critical. I only asked who'd heard of it.
