Would you vote Labour if you earned over £80,000?

When doing more research on labours tax policies DH and I noticed that this starts from salaries of £80,000. This would effect our household as that is DHs salary. We both agree with their campaign for 'no more billionaires'.. but we aren't billionaires. We are a normal family who live a comfortable but far from luxury lifestyle. We're both torn how to vote, as it would usually be labour.

With the current leader, I wouldn’t vote for them again, if I earned £8

Bring back David Miliband

Danglingmod · 22/11/2019 19:19

The calculator has probably disappeared because it's irrelevant. It was created before the 2017 election based on the 2017 Labour manifesto and the tax scenarios in place in 2017.

Yet people were sharing it as if it meant something...

ncncncncncncncnc · 22/11/2019 19:22

No. I won't be. I pay enough tax

LyndaLaHughes · 23/11/2019 12:31

My husband earns over this much and I will be voting Labour. Our public services have been destroyed by this government and I am more than happy to pay more if it means Austerity will end. I thought Corbyn was superb on Question time and I really hope people will now wake up. I care about the situations I see around me and realise my family is very fortunate.

NinetySixer · 23/11/2019 16:23

Yes. I will be voting Labour.

In my constituency they are the only party with a fighting chance of beating the Tories.

The opportunity to reverse the Brexit decision is far more important than paying a few extra quid in tax.

TooLateThePhalarope · 23/11/2019 16:30

No. I won't. I voted Labour in every election since 1979 to 2015. Adjusting for inflation there were times when I must have earned over the equivalent of £80,000 and in 2015 I earned over £80,000. I earn more than that now.

Corbyn's economic policy would be a disaster.

TooLateThePhalarope · 23/11/2019 16:32

I would not cast a vote based on what party would leave me financially better off

I would not cast a vote for a party which will ruin the UK economy.

Allegorical · 23/11/2019 16:39

I wouldn’t for him for a number of reasons. But one is plans to tax dividends. He is totally ignorant about those that take pay in dividends. People who work for themselves, take more risks, have no protection when things go wrong, don’t get paid holidays and sickness, Get none of the employees perks you get from working in big corporations, contribute to the economy by what they bring in etc etc. They should not be taxed at the same rate as employees. It’s ridiculous.

Thehouseintheforest · 23/11/2019 16:46

DH earns 96k and I earn 40.k we will both be voting Labour because we believe in basic socialist principles of spreading the burden.

We like JC because he is principled. If it costs us a bit more in tax to give those on a lower income a better life then we are all for it.
Don't believe the Tory rags that call him a communist. He just wants a fairer society and those lucky enough to earn more than minimum wage should be happy to cough up.

TooLateThePhalarope · 23/11/2019 17:01

Don't believe the Tory rags that call him a communist

He and McDonnell are communists. Throwing "Tory rags" in doesn't make it untrue.

user1497207191 · 23/11/2019 17:08

He is totally ignorant about those that take pay in dividends.

Whilst I agree, the same can be said for the last few Chancellors of both colours. The only reason company owners pay dividends is that if they paid wages, they'd suffer BOTH employee and employer NIC deductions which is clearly stupid. Sole traders and partnerships only pay one type of NIC, more akin with employees. There wouldn't be a dividend problem if employers NIC was scrapped for company owners. Over the years, there've been a few policy ideas to tax all owner-managed businesses in the same way, i.e. no difference whether you're a sole trader, partner or limited company, but it's deemed "too complicated" so kicked into the long grass and the myths and anomalies around dividends remain.

user1497207191 · 23/11/2019 17:10

If it costs us a bit more in tax to give those on a lower income a better life then we are all for it.

It's a big IF. Blair/Brown increased NIC "to save the NHS" - it didn't. Just more spent on inefficiency and waste.

lumpy76 · 23/11/2019 17:15

Corbin and His inner circle are communist anti-semites and NO ONE should be voting for them.

lumpy76 · 23/11/2019 17:15

Corbyn! Autocorrect!

JoannaObrien · 23/11/2019 17:16

I would not vote for them if I earned £10,000 a year or even a million pounds. He is pretending to be one of the people when he is a rich millionaire with a wealthy Mexican wife who imports coffee and is also very rich.

JoannaObrien · 23/11/2019 17:17

@lumpy76

I agree 100%

peonypower · 23/11/2019 17:27

I would not vote for those imbeciles and their crackpot policies anyway. Nationalising industry pffffft....its either theft or it's unaffordable.

Anyway, the top earners already pay some ridiculously high percentage of all income tax. Top earners tend to have skills that are desirable internationally. I'm forever being approached by US based companies. I would earn double there what I earn here, and if we get a labour government, I will go. I bet I am not the only one.

tabulahrasa · 23/11/2019 17:34

“He is pretending to be one of the people”

In what way?

resipsa · 23/11/2019 18:13

As a household, we'd pay £5K extra in tax if Labour won the GE. Wouldn't vote for them but this extra burden has nothing to do with that decision: instead, see all the other reasons pointed out in this thread. All the options are breathtakingly unattractive.

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 03:57

@tabulahrasa

That he actually cares about poor people when he was brought up in a Manor house and was well educated at grammer school (his mother made sure all her children went to grammer school) He lives in a house in London which is worth nearly a million pounds and that is not the only property him and his wealthy wife own. I was born in a slum and lived in a council house there were 8 of us with an outside toilet. Money was very short and we didn't have benefits then he is older than me and has never ever experienced poverty himself but says he knows what it is like? I know Boris is also rich but at least he will not bankrupt this country or make businesses move abroad because of high corporation taxes. The wealthy will also leave the country because he will hike taxes. I am not wealthy but have worked hard to get where I am .... has he worked hard? He sat on the back benches for years until the Union party pushed him to become leader and now he is their puppet and they will turn this country into a little Russia .... sorry to ramble on but I don't want him in charge of our country ever!

Stooshie8 · 24/11/2019 04:21

Why are billionaires allowed to move their assets overseas - I think they have to be non resident for tax purposes but still, if they made their fortune from U.K. investments/ tax payers / assets the majority of their money should stay here invested in things.

tabulahrasa · 24/11/2019 05:30

Everyone is aware of his personal circumstances, so how is that pretending to be anything? It just is...

I'm not a Corbyn supporter btw, just don't understand why him not being poor means he's pretending.

Cerseirys · 24/11/2019 05:34

As an aside, he doesn't exactly live in a flash area. His house may be worth nearly a million now but it certainly wasn't when he bought it. And he's hardly to blame for where his parents chose to send him to school.

And turning the country into a "little Russia"? I think the Tories have had a few more ties with Russia in recent times...

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 05:52

Another thing why is Jeremy Corbin not supporting the UK in leaving the EU? If he stays on the fence what good will he be in getting a deal for Brexit?

This is because he wants to stay in the EU and IF gets in power he will force us to vote again and if the country says yes we will be another 12months while he tries to get a deal with the EU. The man lives in cloud cuckoo land!

He won't get in and he will no longer be leader of the Labour party. My local Labour MP confided in me that he is the worse thing to happen to the Labour party and he has taken them back to the 70s when Labour ruined the UK with its overspending and running up a lot of debt.
