Would you vote Labour if you earned over £80,000?

When doing more research on labours tax policies DH and I noticed that this starts from salaries of £80,000. This would effect our household as that is DHs salary. We both agree with their campaign for 'no more billionaires'.. but we aren't billionaires. We are a normal family who live a comfortable but far from luxury lifestyle. We're both torn how to vote, as it would usually be labour.

I think it’s really sad that so many Jewish people think people don’t care. However I can’t help feeling that a lot of this is propaganda.

Do you honestly not see the contradiction in those two sentences you’ve written right there? Firstly saying it’s sad that Jewish people think others don’t care, then immediately trying to downplay/dismiss their concerns by stating that a lot of what they’re worried about is simply “propaganda”? Staggering.

@DuchessMustard I want you to know that I’m not Jewish but I won’t be voting Labour because of the anti-semitism issue. It appals me and I’ve found some of the dismissive comments on the subject from posters on this forum extremely shocking and upsetting.

Yes I would. Though in this election I'm not sure whether to vote Lib Dem as I want to stay in the EU. One thing is absolutely certain though, I definitely won't be voting Conservative.

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 06:10

@shearwater

I thought about voting Lib Dem but then I realised they don't stand a chance against the other two parties.

CallaLilli · 24/11/2019 06:12

Corbyn wants to stay in the EU? Hardly! He's always been fairly anti-EU. And I've seen where he lives, it's no mansion in Kensington!

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 06:16

This is where he grew up

It depends where you are though. Lib Dems get more votes in my area and have more chance of beating the Conservatives.

What I'll likely do though is read all the manifestos then decide.

I voted Labour in 1997 then Lib Dem until 2015 when I voted Green. Last one I voted Labour.

Thehouseintheforest · 24/11/2019 06:31

I see the Tory propagandists are our in force this morning. Is central office paying Sunday overtime such is your desperation to trash a decent man.

Whereas as proven lier and cheat who won't even acknowledge one of his children! I know who I would rather give my vote to .

CallaLilli · 24/11/2019 06:32

Yes that @JoannaObrien but if you believe everything the Sun says then there's no helping you. Those houses may go for that price now but they certainly weren't when Corbyn bought his home back in the day. If you've ever been there then you'll know Finsbury Park is a very diverse area and not part of "trendy Islington". There's plenty I can criticise him for but I couldn't care less where he lives. It's not his policies that have caused deaths over the past 10 years - it's the tories' and Johnson is far worse than his predecessors.

user1480880826 · 24/11/2019 06:32

Have you actually calculated how much extra tax you will have to pay? I imagine it won’t make much of a dent on your household income.

Also, you say We read all the policies and make our decision based on that. I'm no expert in any party.

This is madness. Manifestos are written by the party and will obviously make lots of bold claims and promises. Your decision on who to vote for needs to be based on far more than a non legally binding document. It’s no better than a christmas list.

Pixxie7 · 24/11/2019 06:52

Given that the average salary is 25k, there appears to be an awful lot of people having problems whilst earning over 3 times that.

Pantheon · 24/11/2019 07:09

Yes, I would vote Labour as tax would only go up by about a fiver and with an 80k wage I could stretch to that. And that extra fiver would go to the NHS, the education system ... things me and my family benefit from. Societies with a smaller gap between richest and poorest are better for everyone, on so many levels.

Pantheon · 24/11/2019 07:09

&fiver aonth

Pantheon · 24/11/2019 07:10

Sorry! That should read a fiver a month.

JPharm · 24/11/2019 07:16

Yes, if you earn that much and you begrudge paying a little extra tax so everyone can benefit from better public services then you are quite simply selfish. I’d pay extra tax now and I earn about half that.

StripyTShirt · 24/11/2019 07:47

I earn just under £38000 and I would be happy to pay an extra £2 a week now if it means better services for the people I work with, so yes I will be voting Labour on 12.12.

I have benefited from free healthcare and education (up until uni) and would like to think that future generations can also benefit from fully funded services, which will only benefit the country in the long run.

I would feel the same way if I earned £80000 or more.

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 07:56

I won't vote Labour because he will put my corporation tax up and my personal tax as well and I already pay a lot in tax .... as I said before Labour will not win this election.

Stooshie8 · 24/11/2019 07:59

It's all very well being magnanimous if the increase in tax is peanuts and doesn't make a difference for you but the upshot is that raising tax rates probably raises pay rates at the top. Everyone complains about the rich poor divide but this only feed it.
Other knock ons are people working less to avoid going in to the higher bracket. The doctor's overtime pay cock up is a prime example.
Taking half of anyone's earnings is not a good idea imv because of the knock ons of more people moving money offshore and top dogs demanding more pay.

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 08:03

@Stooshie

If Corbyn gets in which I doubt, I have already been looking at properties in France or Spain and lot of my friends have as well. I can easily manage my small business from overseas. I think the larger companies will also do the same if Corbyn tries to tax them too much as is his intention. He just hasn't thought this through has he?

Stooshie8 · 24/11/2019 08:13

One if the problems with all the promises is that no one knows what 83 billion will buy (what JC says will be raised by his selection of tax hikes), or any of the other sum of billions that are being bandied about.
I have just heard on the news that Labour will compensate the women who had their pension age changed twice in a relatively short space of time - it is women born over a 2-3 year range in the 1950s - so they are going to be given 15,000 each . I would have said that this is a small cohort of pensioners yet the cost is 58billion . Obviously a bigger number than you'd expect (and just goes to show how much the Gov coffers saved by shafting them!!)

So his tax raising is not going to be that world changing.
It is very difficult to get your head round billions of pounds, who knows what it really means??

tabulahrasa · 24/11/2019 08:16

"He just hasn't thought this through has he?"

Lol, it's about as thought through as moving to countries that tax at the same or higher rates to avoid tax...

lovemylot1 · 24/11/2019 08:29

It’s not just a few pounds for many people. It’s hundreds a month for some. If you live in the south east and pay all net salary as it is on mortgage childcare and train fares then there isn’t any surplus.

Why can’t people believe that? I don’t think people understand how much tax is already paid. My dh already pays at a marginal tax rate of 62% isn’t that high enough?

lovemylot1 · 24/11/2019 08:32

This labour campaign and the internet follow up feels very hostile if you are one of the people affected. It all feels very personal. Some of us are just working flat out in jobs that are hugely stressful and compromise health and family significantly and to be honest giving the majority of income to the government already. But apparently it isn’t enough ....
