Last week adult DD was at her dad's house, and her stepmother went to make tea. She just opened the kettle and checked there was water, then set it to heat. DD was Hmm and said "Don't you fill it with fresh water first? to which stepmother took the hump and said no, you just top up with more water as needed.

Now, in my house, I heat as much as I think I need and pour any excess out, so the kettle is filled with fresh water each time.

Obviously my wonderful DD knows that my way is the right way Halo, but what do you lot think?

Another vote for stepmother.

geeraf · 14/11/2019 20:45

Stepmothers. Otherwise you're just chucking water away needlessly?

Top it up but every now and again dump and repeat as we get flakey limescale in kettle.

Wannabegreenfingers · 14/11/2019 20:46

Stepmother, the other is wasteful.

Peony99 · 14/11/2019 20:46

I don't fill the kettle, I put in as much as I need each time before boiling plus a bit more for luck.

But I don't empty it between times, so I vote stepmother.

TheresWaldo · 14/11/2019 20:46

We have dreadful problems with chalky water so we always empty the kettle and fill it from a brita filter thingy jug. We do try not to overfill the kettle in the first place though. I hope this doesn't overcomplicate things Grin

Singlenotsingle · 14/11/2019 20:47

Definitely stepmother

FuckKnowsMate · 14/11/2019 20:47

Stepmother. What a waste of water otherwise

AdaColeman · 14/11/2019 20:48

I agree with you, tea tastes best when it's made with fresh water every time. I think it's the oxygen in the fresh water that makes a difference, but I'm no scientist!

I don't throw the excess water away though, I use it for things like washing fruit, boiling eggs, soaking dirty pans.

BuffaloCauliflower · 14/11/2019 20:48

Stepmothers way. No need to waste perfectly fine water. It’s being boiled each time. Only deviation might be water left in work kettle over the weekend

z4zie · 14/11/2019 20:50

I do it your way as apparently re-boiled water take air out of the water which diminishes the tea taste. I do however only fill the kettle with enough water thatbis needed. But if someone else did it the other way i wouldn't raise an Hmm

ladygracie · 14/11/2019 20:51

I never top it up as it tastes funny to me and I can alway tell. But I don’t refill it each time, I just use it until it’s empty. If that makes sense.

ActualHornist · 14/11/2019 20:51

Sorry I'm also with the stepmother!

Although I try hard to only put exactly what's need in there at all. We are in a soft water area so I've never had to descale the kettle.

TheReluctantCountess · 14/11/2019 20:51

Stepmother

teabagleftin · 14/11/2019 20:51

Stepmothers way. Why waste water?

FaithInfinity · 14/11/2019 20:51

Your way. Reboiled water affects the taste of the tea. We also live in a hard water area so it builds up with line scale otherwise. I try not to boil too much at a time, just what’s needed, so I don’t waste loads of water.
