Last week adult DD was at her dad's house, and her stepmother went to make tea. She just opened the kettle and checked there was water, then set it to heat. DD was Hmm and said "Don't you fill it with fresh water first? to which stepmother took the hump and said no, you just top up with more water as needed.

Now, in my house, I heat as much as I think I need and pour any excess out, so the kettle is filled with fresh water each time.

Obviously my wonderful DD knows that my way is the right way Halo, but what do you lot think?

@frida really? The most ridiculous thing ever? "if you boil the water too long or reboil it, you risk concentrating certain undesirable chemicals that may be in your water. Examples of chemicals that become more concentrated include nitrates, arsenic, and fluoride... Excessive intake of nitrates has been linked to methemoglobinemia and certain types of cancer. Arsenic exposure may produce symptoms of arsenic toxicity, plus it has been associated with some forms of cancer."

@Damntheman

I think you missed some words out ‘rebooked water doesn’t taste any different’to me

@DoubleNegativePanda obviously, I do it your way - fresh water makes much nicer tea as far as I’m concerned and who wants to be drinking concentrated chemicals?

I live in a very hard water area. I have a boiling water dispenser I bought from Argos. I fill it with bottled water and it just boils a cup at a time. The oxygen thing is a bit rubbish as the oxygen would come out as the water heats up the first TIME.

Yes @MsChatterbox you said water is unsafe to drink if boiled more than once. That’s just not true and is frankly a ridiculously stupid statement. Where is your —incomplete—quote from? Even reading it out of context like that I know it does not support your original assertion.

Mumsnet - where towels are washed after a single use because else plague ensues, but to empty the dregs from the kettle is wasting water. ohhkay.
